Need some advice from the forum :

My license was issued in 2009 valid for 20 years in Punjab, as we once lived there for a few years. However my facial features have changed dramatically in the last 12 years, I was 18 then and am 30 now, since back in those days Punjab gave simple printed and laminated licenses, 12 years hasn't been been very kind and photo looks blemished as well, hence making me and the person in the license look like seperate entities. Many times even the cops don't believe it.

Anyway we have no link left in Punjab now, and I now reside in Gurugram, Haryana. So despite the license still being valid, can I apply for a new license in Gurgaon ?

Would I need to surrender the old one, or should I just apply as a fresh applicant and go through the standard process of giving a driving test.

Or am I even eligible to apply in Gurgaon or would I need to go back to Punjab ?

I had my old DL from TN which was issued in 2000 - So no entry in the vaahan website or any online entries.

It got expired in 2020 and also I was in Bangalore now.

I had reached out to a Driving school in maratahalli to get it expedited :( since I had to travel to TN the following week (was really unsure if the government was going to extend the deadline for covid, which was march 31,2021).

I had reached out on Friday. The Driving school person ensured backlogging over the weekend and got the appointment on monday itself (though online I could not find it for a week in it, not sure how they do it). I had to visit the RTO for biometrics and got a slip confirming the DL request (which he mentioned was valid for driving for 30 days). I got my DL in a week (downloaded it on digilocker as well) and was good to go.

Have you tried downloading your DL at DigiLocker or Vahaan App? Your number should be like PB- followed by district code they use in RTO, like 65 for Mohali. Mine was originally issued in 2004 and later sometime was changed to chip, don’t remember if I had lost or it was due to renewal.

If you can find in the app, everything is good and I won’t bother going over the process just because I don’t look the same as I used to be 15 years ago. But, if you can’t find your DL in App, there can be some issues. There was a time when agents used to make fake DL and these days, cops/ insurance agents are strict in verifying. In that case you will have to apply afresh at Gurgaon.

If your DL is fine but you still want to have your current picture/ address, I am not sure if we can simply exchange other state DL over the counter.

Yes I carry it with me on the Digi locker app as well and it looks a little cleaner on the app than the original that I have, it's just that here in Gurgaon, the cops insist that you carry a hard copy. While I know Digi locker is verified by the government, these guys are just out to make a quick buck.

But in your opinion does the change in looks warrant an update to a new license ? I was once even rejected by the Zoomcar folks stating that the girl in the photo was my daughter

Following up on my previous post, I finally received the renewed license at home by post on 26/04/2021. It has taken 20 days for the entire process. On the Parivahan Website, on 07/04/2021 itself the approvals were done and license was sent to be printed.

My previous experiences (albeit a few years ago) with RTO services have not been this impressive. Despite the pandemic raging on, I have to say the entire experience has been seamless. Those who still hold a paper license, my advice would be to get the smart card version as soon as possible. Renewals and any future services become very easy given that details are available online.

Quick question: while uploading the address proof, you uploaded a copy of your electricity bill with the landlord's name? Anything else uploaded for address? Also, the Aadhaar you carried, is the address outside Karnataka? Was that any issue?

The problem is that I seem to have misplaced the physical copy of my license, though I have it in my Digilocker on my phone.

Is there any way I can get this renewed in Bangalore? Any guidance on the procedure will be very helpful.

@ss212: I'm sorry for the delayed reply. On the portal I had only uploaded the Electricity Bill. As I live in an apartment, the bill only shows the name of the society and not my Landlady. I did carry my rental agreement with me and submitted that too but only physically.

My Aadhar card is issued with an address in Mumbai. That is not an issue at all. Even my renewed license carries the same number from Maharashtra although the smart card now says Karnataka State - Indian Union Motor Driving License.

Is there any renewal procedure if the physical copy of the old license is not with you, or can I apply for a fresh license here in Bangalore?

Hi, how did you add your AP DL in mParivaahan app? The DL carries only a 7 digit number whereas the app asks for a 14 or 15 digit number. Is there a way to work out the full DL number for AP DLs?

My license taken from Kerala expired this June. Though at the moment I am in AP, my official address is in Bangalore.
I entrusted an agent near the e-city RTO office to get the renewal done. But he told me that during the backlog check(I don't know what this is) there is some mismatch in my name in the records and renewal is not be possible and I may have to apply fresh.

Now, I don't mind applying fresh but I need to know are there any legal implications in applying fresh as against renewing?

Also, what is this backlog check, and can the name be corrected there?

I am in the same boat. I have Mumbai booklet license from 20 years ago and plan to renew it at Koramangala RTO (nearest to me. I believe we can do in any RTO in Bangalore)
My booklet license (and online details) do not have my middle name.
But all my photo-id/address proofs (voter id, aadhaar, passport) have my full middle name in them

Will cause a problem at DL renewal?
I don't need DL as a photo-id (just as a DL is enough). So I do not care if it carries my middle name.
But will I be required to add "Change of name" service also along with DL renewal and Change of Address?

I am worried it will be unnecessary document hassle (maybe an affidavit, but they may unnecessarily give me a run-around to publish in gazzette etc).


I want to give it a try to renew my DL without any agents and bribes. So based on the steps needed,
Just FYI for everyone, as a pleasant surprise, I got my very old booklet DL details added in the sarathi database by sending multiple emails to the RTO officer and Deputy Transport Commissioner - Computer for Maharashtra.
