Comfortable, all-weather, waterproof, good grip and non-slippery. I used to use canvas and running shoes earlier but considering how dirty and slushy some parking, petrol bunk, restrooms on the way are, I moved to Crocs.

(Didn't vote as Crocs doesn't fit in the options given)

Same here for exactly same reason.

re: Ideal footwear for driving

I prefer to drive in either Crocs or Sandals.
For long drives, ventilated sandals/crocs are best.

Avoid using Hawai slippers like plague.

While driving these slippers interfere with the pedals.
Secondly, In even mildly wet granite surfaces, these slipper will slip.

re: Ideal footwear for driving

Usually, if I can comfortably walk in a pair of shoes, I can drive with them without any issues. In fact, I don't even mind driving with thick-soled trekking shoes. The only time I had an issue was with a pair with memory foam insole. You feel like walking on clouds but then don't get any feel of the pedals and I found myself half clutching often.

I had a similar pair with Ferrari branding. But I got my leg pulled for wearing formals with jeans, that too during a team-bhp meet . No doubt they are very comfortable for driving. Adidas used to make similar shoes with ankle support, that trumps these pumas. But I can't find them anymore.

Quite the opposite for me. I avoid ventilated footwear or sandals to keep the dirt and slush from my feet.

re: Ideal footwear for driving

I wear these. Very comfy and flexible. Only thing I need to be wary about is to not getting the sole wet - else it slips.

My wife prefers to drive bare feet, irrespective of the footwear she's otherwise wearing, heels or flats.

re: Ideal footwear for driving

I learned driving with bare foot when I used to remove the footwear during driving. But later on switched to driving with the footwear on since on some trips i had to get down multiple times at each stop and was becoming difficult to constantly put it on and off. Now my preferences in order are walking shoes, formal shoes, footwear. I am comfortable with all of these.
But once in a blue, I drive barefoot which would remind me of my early driving days.

re: Ideal footwear for driving

Haha, thread appeared at the right time for me. I am equally comfortable with formal shoes or sandals while driving. But I've been having exams this week and the only footwear we are allowed to wear are slippers. I was wearing a new leather pair and it was very annoying to drive because my foot kept slipping out. It's a short drive of 2km but it's the first time that I noticed the effect of footwear on driving.

re: Ideal footwear for driving

During my initial driving days on my Omni, I used to wear rubber slippers and have driven barefoot also. But after graduating to my Rapid (2017), I usually wear my Hush Puppies leather slippers or my Hush Puppies casual suede shoe which has a thin sole. I have also driven barefoot once as my slippers got completely wet in the rain. Initially it was tough but after some time, I got used to it.

For long drives, I use Puma -BMW branded driving shoes. Not very expensive either. Works well since it is not too broad and fits snuggly. For daily drives its just regular wear.

Hey, are these woodland moccasins? I have the exact same colour style from Woodland

Generally drive in any footwear, crocs, loafers, running shoes etc...I drive in anything except slippers. Drove maybe one or two times barefeet but felt very uncomfortable besides feeling like a black & yellow taxi driver of yore (no offence to anyone).

Only drawback with running shoes is that due to heavily cushioned soles, need to adjust seat position. Most comfortable are the loafers but again I won't specifically wear loafers only because I'm driving.

Cheers

re: Ideal footwear for driving

I've never driven barefoot and I don't think I can either. I didn't vote because I drive wearing different kind of shoes including flip flops and crocs and formal shoes but I avoid driving with woodland shoes because of their thick soles and their size sometimes create problem with pedal spacing in manual transmission cars.

re: Ideal footwear for driving

Though I have voted for driving shoes, it is preferable to wear any comfortable and practical footwear suited to the individual for driving. The shoe soles need to have a good traction, just like our tyres and need to be in unison with the shoe uppers. Else it will act like a retreaded tyre that is usually made up of 1+1 =2 units, not one.

Another common mistake we make is that after entering the car with footwear that has wet soles due to some reason, we start and drive the car immediately. In such cases the sole needs to be made less wet by gently rubbing it on the footmat and waiting for a while. With wet soles getting grip on the pedals is tough.

And apart from the sole with good tread, the car pedal rubber (AT's have less of these) must not be bald, as over a period of time these wear away.

re: Ideal footwear for driving

Going to office in "Bangalore Traffic" needed very breathable and if needed, easy to remove shoes; as a result I get only slip-on kind of shoes. Couple of months before last year's lockdown, got Skechers slip on shoes - totally a fan of that while driving or walking. For all my long drives, I get a local brand of flip flops - very very hard, still bends a bit making it perfect. Moreover, feet don't sweat also. Only drawback is these come in bright colors and designs Now that my cars are automatic transmission ones, bare foot is also a pretty comfortable.

re: Ideal footwear for driving

Very interesting thread indeed. This was a very valid and confusing question to me when I started driving. When I learnt driving, the driving instructor told me to use barefoot method to get the biting point of the clutch properly. Well it worked that time till I get my licence at least. Later on I couldn't drive with even a slipper or a shoe or else car will always stall. Like many other I had a driving license but was too afraid to drive in the initial days, especially long drives. Later on, I had to go through an incident and ended up brushing my driving skills by means of a Maruti driving school which opened just a few days prior to that if I remember correctly.

They really helped me to erase that problem forever and ever since I drove the cars only with a footwear on. Whether it's a shoe, sandal or slipper.

Driving shoes used to be my favourite during 2015-2018 period. But later I find it very difficult to walk with those driving shoes. Now I prefer
Casual light weight shoes like Clarks, Adidas etc of same kind for my long drives.

If it's a short to medium distance drives, I may still opt for a snug fit sandal with back strap. But 90% of the times I will opt for a shoe though. For extremely short journeys, I may opt for a slipper if I feel okay. But certainly I cannot drive longer with a slipper as it used to cause pain in my toe joints, especially manual transmission.

Used to drive even with safety boots while I was posted at a site. Toyota Hilux and PPE were good fun those days.

re: Ideal footwear for driving

Im normally comfortable driving in whatever footwear I'm wearing in general. For longer drives I like to wear ankle length hiking/trekking type boots as they provide good support, weight and grip.
