Spotted Ssanyong Rexton Testing at Kalamboli, Navi Mumbai

Spotted this MH - 15 registered (Typically Mahindra) undergoing road test at Kalamboli, Navi Mumbai this morning. The front passenger (an engineer?) was taking note of data when I spotted the Rexton. Interestingly, the Rexton had no camouflaging whatsoever.

Nice catch - the car looks good! And I see an AWD badge in the rear. Guess this is supposed to hit the market in Diwali time frame!

Re: Mahindra to launch Korando and Rexton

Dont know why but i dont like its headlights at all :( Overall car is very good & looks robust. But its headlights spoils the party. Rest car has very good stance & has a robust feel which SUV needs.

Will it be made in India or it will be imported? I hope Mahindra plans to make it here only to keep price in check.

Looks good, even though the grill is looking suspiciously similar to the Mercedes in the first casual look.

I am not sure it will be able to make a dent if it is imported for then it would be competing with the well established Fortuner, and I am sure M&M would not price it close to the XUV to avoid internal competition.

Re: Mahindra to launch Korando and Rexton

I really cant understand what makes them test these things to death as it were. These vehicles have been around in various markets for ages and indeed, the Rexton is based on an old gen Merc M Class so why all this testing?
Why dont they launch them quickly? In this SUV hungry market they will surely sell. The main thing is for them to beat this new proposed Diesel Tax by launching early.

Since Rexton is body-on-frame, they might have changed the structure to save the cost (I think it is easier achieve this in body-on-frame than monocoque chassis), like Tata did for their 2WD variant of Aria. And they will surely need to do some changes to the engine and exhaust, so that it can tolerate the Indian quality diesel.

Re: Mahindra to launch Korando and Rexton

The following review does not inspire much confidence. But I think the standards in UK for vehicles would be much higher.

Ssangyong Rexton 4x4 - Summary - New Car Review - What Car?

"Lots of metal for the money, but the Rexton's quality and on-road manners are so poor that we really can’t see a reason to recommend it."

Re: Mahindra to launch Korando and Rexton

Good point. But they acquired Ssangyong around a year back so why not speed up these launches a bit and give the Indian consumer some new toys to play with instead of the boring old Scorpio, Safari etc which seem to be going on ad nauseam!

All Markets vary. I think it is a better bet to test the vehicle in india. Fuel Quality, road Quality, Frequent Start-Stops, sudden brakes situations need sufficient testing IMHO.

The other high level statement I get to hear is that SsangYong products dont
inspire a high level driving pleasure. Sorry if that sounds like a sweeping statement. But would like to know more about the same.

Re: Mahindra to launch Korando and Rexton

I dont understand how Mahindra is going to convince a buyer to opt for a Rexton rather than buy a XUV500, which is not only a better car but a lot cheaper as well. The only advantage Rexton has is that in all probability there will be chunky discounts and instant delivery!!

The Rexton is more than 10 years old and is based on a Mercedes platform that was launched 15 years ago!! While acceptable if one is paying under 10 lacs for this, but north of 18 lacs thats a strict no no!!

The car has a lot of space inside but the handling and steering is comparable to a Scorpio, it rides decent on UK highways but that is not saying much.

Also why does Mahindra have to test it so much, Rextons are already assembled and sold in Sri Lanka...link.

Re: Mahindra to launch Korando and Rexton

Found these two on a test run in Punjab this morning. Guess they are going pan India. They don't look as bulky as the Endy or Fortuner.
