Re: Tata Sumo Gold TVC (2013) - On the money? or, Missed by a mile?

I liked the TVC! Not for its unrealistic, gravity defying effects, but for the simple reason that they are trying to present it as 'sexy, fun, competitive and youthful'.

I do agree with you on the modification bit. There should be some visual difference b/w personal and cab variants. (Still love the Sumo 4x4's beefy tyres macho look). Would have a been much better sell for the TVC.

Isn't it up to the manufacturer, how do they want to showcase the brand. Success or failure, they gotta try, right?

And, btw, I loved the 'kuchh log Sumo chalate hain' TVC!

Absolutely LOVED this advertisement.

The current attempt of flying on top of buildings is SO STUPID.
Tata used to make such nice adverts. Sad that they are losing even that plot.

If only the Sumo Gold had some basic comfort levels taken care of and if not for a scary brake behavior during a TD. I would have bought it.

This is the first time I remember seeing a TV Ad for Innova. The ad is ignorable though

Re: Indian Car Advertising Scene: A Critique

Nice thread!

I loved the Ad of Avenger the most in terms of music the way its shot.
Owning a Punto - I feel sad to see that the ads don't convey much about this car.

I dislike the new Vista ads - however, the Safari's "Reclaim your life" was very good.

Slightly off topic - I love this ad because of Music & Priyanka (Listen to it with good base)

Re: Indian Car Advertising Scene: A Critique

Most memorable ads which sold USP of the vehicle as per me were
1) Petrol khatam hi nahi hoti ad for the Maruti 800
2) Feel like god ad for the Bajaj Avenger
3) reclaim your life ad for the Tata Safari
4) everybody makes way for the Bullet, with the train stopping for the RE.
5) the first Bajaj Caliber ad

I used to like the old Tata Sierra ad. However, the best car TVC that I've come across in recent times is undoubtedly the M&M 'Live Young, Live Free' ad () - no other ad has made me want to rush out, pick up one of those beastie boys, plough my way through those fields, leave my marks on the sand dunes and end up at the top of the world. One of my favourite moments is at 0:54 - that yellow stinger (I think) is absolutely to die for! Just wish it could accommodate my gargantuan frame!

Re: Indian Car Advertising Scene: A Critique

It seem Hyundai India got the worst advertising team. Most of their new ads are utterly hopeless. I wonder who approves them.

The international ones on the other hand are class though!

Innova was earlier promoted by Amir Khan - a few gooey ads were aired. But Innova being Innova, the ads would have rather helped Amir build his brand!!

At the same time those ads were much better than the current totally forgettable ones

Re: Indian Car Advertising Scene: A Critique

The recent i20 ad where the guy drives with his hands tied over with tape - no words to describe it. Makes owners like me cringe each time I see that ad. Wonder who approves ads like this. Guess this ad is worse even when compared with their standards (going inside the lift and then GPS ad, helicopter lifting and bringing the car ad to name a few )

While Karl mentioned that this ad. was received well, I am somehow not convinced and wanted to get motorheads' views on this. What do you'll say?

P.S. Really wish the Tata Motors' service organization was as responsive as Karl had been.
Looks like a mimic of the scene from Bad Boys II.

And very sorry to say Mr. Slym, that this ad doesn't seem to inspire personal buyers or the BPO cabbies. But then they are my personal views.

Re: Indian Car Advertising Scene: A Critique

Sumo is at it again. Racing a 2 ton elephant around corners -

Seems like a direct lift from this TG episode -

Like a lot of others here, I also loved this ad.

Maruti, on the other hand, (I haven't seen the latest ones), seems to have had a good connect with the Indian Consumer. The heart warming advt of 'Need a ride for Diwali' echos the consumer connect with Maruti and it's long term presence in the market.

Absolutely, loved the Maruti ad.

Ever since I saw this ad., I kept wondering if the marketing guys at Tata had truly lost it - trying to re-position Tata Sumo in the 'sexy, fun, competitive, youthful' segment, without modifying even the exteriors in any significant manner. To my mind, it showed lack of market understanding and wasteful spends.

I expressed this point of view on Twitter to Karl Slym and our conversation went as below:

Me: did Tata Motors do ANY research before the Sumo TVC? Frankly, it's embarassing and displays poor customer understanding.

Karl Slym: Hi Kartik. We do before and after research and this one scores well in both. But thanks for your feedback.

(I realized later that my message was a bit curt, perhaps reflective of my anguish , and appreciate Karl for actually responding to it.)

I also hated this ad and hats off to Karl Slym.

That makes the two of us, even though I'm not a fan of offroading or 4x4s, this ad has started changing my perception.

I agree, and the auto-wipers that have been highlighted, look like an after thought since they couldn't make it rain so quickly and stop, so they put water on the road

Interesting observation.i am sure he took that into consideration.the effect on "brand aamir" by association.

I recall he was questioned during a samsung press conference ' that SRK endorses the most popular nokia brand ' he had replied rather brashly " SRK has the habit for settling at no.2 "

I am sure samsungs success over nokia boosted his brand equity and probably caused SRK s exit from nokias endorsement pool.
