Hey guys saw this hyundai minivan near the hyundai factory near sriperumbudur on my way to track day. Is this a new vehicle being tested or an old import? Sorry about the poor quality pic(phone cam focused on windscreen that was dirty due to buttfly hits). This guy zoomed off after he saw me taking pics and sadly i could not keep up with him in my M800

Hey sidindica thanks for identifying the van. That's exactly the same front end i saw. but he took off before i could click a pics of the front end.

Great catch there! from the registration plates it looks like a taxi...maybe, maybe not. Its a Hyundai starex MPV/H-1 van (as called in different markets and is actually being considered under evaluation here.

full details here:

Hyundai H-1 | Hyundai Motor Company

Official inside information quotes the this VAN will not be launched in india at least for next 2 years.

Next plan is New sonata , santa Fe, and face lifted i10

I liked this Vehicle for the inside space and seating. This having a potential to compete with Innova and others.

Thanks for the link Sidindica.
To me it looks like the cheaper sibling of H1, may be india specific competitor for Innova. No swing doors and a cheaper looks backlamps.

Its been almost 5 years since reports have come that Hyundai is going to launch the Starex in india.Looks doubtful though, this one looks more like a embassy/hotel car.

I guess its under Hyundai's routine testing, maybe as part of its global test routine. With Nissan's NV200 coming next year, Hyundai could bring in one of their models too to compete in the expanding MPV segment.

I won't be suprised if this van is for company use in the Hyundai plant. Moreover, the yellow plates could be to save taxes because AFAIK taxes are less for company registered vehicles. Not sure on the exact details.

It should be this model , which is outdated model :(

Nope it was indeed the starex/h1 Mpv. The front end i saw matched the starex/h1 and it was nothing like the trajet in the link you have provided.

Spotted the Same H-1 in Chennai last evening.

The reg number TN 21 -XX- XXXX- seems very similar to the one posted BY rocky080

The van is rather plain and does not have much of a road presence.

From the number, it does not look like a test car. It only looks like some large company/hotel has imported it and using it for people moving.

Sorry about the pic quality.

Guess its used by Korean officials at the plant or embassy.

The i800 in UK. Very spacious, lots of luggage space.Very comfortable. Much better than Innova/Aria, though would be expensive if introduced in India.

This is sold as the Hyundai Imax here in Australia. I had the opportunity to rent it here and drive close to 1000kms. It has oodles of space and decent handling(for a van), but is let down by the anaemic 2.4(petrol) engine which cannot haul a fully loaded van at a decent pace. The van in this market has a CVT and it is a pain to cruise at 100, as the engine cannot keep up on a light throttle and you end up with a kickdown to build speed and the cycle continues.

If introduced in Indian market, I suppose it will come in the Crdi guise(used mainly in the cargo version of the van here), so the above points may be moot. Still, the way it is, the Toyota Tarago(a similar van) wins hands down when compared to this.

This is the Hyundai Starex, I was recently driven around in Malaysia, it sported a 5 speed AT coupled to a 2.5L CRDi VGT motor delivering 125 PS/392 Nm torque. Believe me, its an extremely spacious and comfortable 8 seater (even for the rear occupants nice foot well) with decent ride quality. I guess this will compete with the TATA Winger. My peer who rented/drove this said the acceleration was linear but the size was a pain navigating the narrow multi level parking ramps and bruised it a couple of times over a 5 day renting period.
