The Laura came with 1.9L PD engine which bumped the power to 110BHP. A 2.0L PD engine was introduced in the Superb and Passat with 140BHP. The Laura engine was then changed to 2.0L CRDI with 110BHP. The Superb PD changed to CRDI but same 140BHP. The facelift Passat 2.0L changed to 170BHP CRDI.

PD was VW/Skoda technology for CRDI but it was not as good as CRDI. NVH levels were higher and power delivery was peaky.

PS: With this post I just realised that I have driven every incarnation of Laura, Passat, Jetta, Superb and Octavia.
Ah! My mistake then. So the old shape Octy never had a TDI PD 1.9 in India then?

You said indirect injection. I think anshuman is right.
lol. Just went back and read what I wrote and noticed my typo. Yes it wasnt indirect it was direct injection. That's when I read Anshuman's post I was like wait isnt that what I wrote.

Somewhere I am having this inkling that the Laura had a 1.9PD as well as 2.0PD later on. The 1.9PD was 105bhp and 2.0Pd was 110bhp. I am not able to remember this at all.

I believe the Laura facelift was initially sold with a 1.9 PD. Skoda then quietly swapped it with a 2.0 CR without much fanfare.

That’s right! IIRC, it was around March - April 2010. It was around the same time, the 2.0 CR got into the previous gen Jetta as well. At that time Skoda was kind of getting a big brother treatment (the Jetta got only 110ps MT whereas the Laura got both - 110ps MT & 140ps DSG)

Those days the Octy diesel was the benchmark. Only other choice was Lancer 2.0, Astra 1.7 and Escort.

The said 3 models had sluggish initial response where as Skoda Octavia differentiated itself by having quick initial response. The most sluggish among the 3 was Astra 1.7 which was ideal for being chauffeur driven where as Octavia was more a drivers car. The rear passengers had a nightmare time in Octavia due to bumpy rear suspension where as the best car for rear passenger was no doubt Lancer.

Until Elantra CRDI arrived in 2004 and then Magnum Diesel arrived in 2006(or 2007??).

Did Elantra CRDI really create a ripple in the market ? In south India , i saw only few Elantra's on road at that time. Did you mean Hyundai Accent CRDI for that created some amount of competition to Lancer's and Skoda's at that time...

No, both Elantra and Magnum never achieved the kind of sales figures they deserved. Both had decent dynamics and Superb engines for that time. The new Elantra expected soon might cost close to twice as much as the previous Elantra and it still may find some takers.

Just after the facelift, only the L&K got the 140bhp engine, don't remember if it was pd or crdi, and it was the only DSG in the Laura range. Then soon after it was switched to the present configurations.

IIRC when the facelift was launched, the L&K was the only variant to get the CR engine, while other variants had the 1.9 PD. Later on when tighter emmission norms came into force, they brought the CR engine to lower variants as well. I don't think the PD engine was ever tuned to produce 140 HP in the Laura.

Post facelift L&K had 140hp version of PD engine, all variants received the CR engine at the same time in April 10

Re: The Ruby Raptor comes home: Skoda Laura Ambiente MT TDI

Has the After Sale Service of Skoda improved now ? I heard from few friends that it has shown sluggish improvement in the last year or so, but still lacking in terms of both parts replacement and service center etiquette.

Team BHP moderators had met with Skoda officials sometime back but I think Skoda still likes to fight customers in courts rather than solve their real issues.

Has the A.S.S of Skoda really improved, especially since the launch of Rapid ( as they are dealing with a more price sensitive consumer now ) or is it just a market talk to lure fresh meat in ?

Is the launch of the new Octavia going follow the marketing strategy of "India first" and rest of the world later ?
Turbocar: Skoda has definitive plans to bring the next gen Octavia to India sometime in 2013. This has been widely reported in the media as well, of late.

If I recall correctly, the new Octavia will share Volkswagen's modular MQB platform and is set to be larger in size than its predecessor i.e. the current Laura. Skoda will most likely ditch the brand name 'Laura' altogether and rebadge it as the new Octavia, even in India - which I believe will be a first of sorts for us.

Remember the 'Octavia' brand name has been way more successful than the 'Laura' plus it carries some serious legacy in India. For Skoda, this will also lend consistency and homogeneity in the name of its product offering worldwide.

Yes, the new Octavia should be coming to India by mid next year , but will be a larger car (almost 15 cm longer than the current one!) and with a longer wheelbase.
In fact internationally there is no Laura in the Skoda portfolio and the new one is still called Octavia as they had entirely discontinued the old model and moved to the new model. In India, they had specifically continued both the models parallelly and hence the need arose to name the new model differently from the earlier one. Unfortunately they did not understand the Desi connotation of the name when considering the names! The Octavia brand will certainly be better for the car even in India.
