Looks like there is no classification for hatchback in the smart card. While the old RC books had it, my new smart card for the old indica v2 shows it as a saloon. I just noticed it after this thread... quiet interesting !!

The definition for sedan is given like this some where:

A hatchback is a sedan or coupe, with a trunk lid that hinges above the rear winow. If there is a backseat, seatback folds down. The whole arrangement allows for easy access to a max luggage area.

This is another reference of Wikipedia

Saloon may refer to:So there is not much difference with in these. In my Ritz the Tamilnadu RTO office was not having the code for Ritz in their Software so they have hand written as Ritz VDI and did not suffix ABS. That does n't matter. As far as ABS meant for the break system I did not bother much on all these.

These kind of mistakes are common in the RTO. I have a Fiesta S and the RC book had ZXi printed on it. It was manually corrected later with a seal next to it.

My Indica is registered as a saloon, a synonym for sedanm and you'll find this classification in the RC books for most cars, no one really cares.

In any case, if you're willing to accept wikipedia as a authoritative source, this is what it has to say: "A vehicle with four passenger doors and a liftgate at the rear can be called a four-door hatchback, four-door hatchback sedan, or five-door sedan. "

Well i have not accepted my RC Smart card after i found a mistake in the same. My car is listed as 1.4 L and i own a 1.2 L. The dealer was initially given some excuses as they can't do anything for this etc.. but few phone calls made the difference. Getting the Smart Card with correct details in a day or two.

Recently i got a smart card from the RTO, there it was mentioned car type as sedan instead of hatchback.
One of my friend who bought i10 1.1 after me also got the same thing sedan. the RTO is Yeshwanthapur RTO Bangalore.
Can i10 owners in the fourm clarify the same or do i have to change it or it will be a problem in future.
No Need to "blame" the RTO. The manufacturer itself given this details to the RTO. In Hyundai Cars the 6th digit of VIN represent Body Type.

If its 5 then the definition given by Hyundai is 5= Sedan, 5 Door in the case of i10 & i20

My December 2008 swift zxi is also registered as a sedan by RTO office at Pen, Maharashtra. Anyone else with MH06 hatchbacks with sedan/saloon on their smart cards?

Please read this article first.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sedan_(automobile) also this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatchback

Quote:
Hatchback (a.k.a. liftback) sedans typically have the fastback profile, but instead of a trunk lid, the entire back of the vehicle lifts up (using a liftgate or hatch). A vehicle with four passenger doors and a liftgate at the rear can be called a four-door hatchback, four-door hatchback sedan, or five-door sedan.

My Vista QJD 09 is registered as a saloon
When asked the dealer about why a saloon and not a hatch, his reply was :
The manufacturer (here TATA) gives the details of the new car to the RTO. The RTO has set category of cars like sedan, saloon etc and its the RTO that decides where the car fits and in which category.
I dont know the validity of this answer but accepted the card as the dealer assured me, it wont be a problem in the future even if i sell the car.

All this just makes me wonder whether the RTO is trying to extract extra money from the customer if a car is labelled as sedan/saloon rather than a hatch.
