Whilst the cars being debadged is nothing out of the ordinary, that they were dented/scratched is certainly a little unusual for test cars. Usually they are in pretty good shape, if not in an immaculate condition. This is because the company folks know that in today's day and age, there are no secrets. That they could be spied/snapped/sighted anytime. They certainly wouldn't want people to have a wrong perception of the car now, do they?

It definitely had the tappet sound (at idling) that typically produced by diesel engine. Once he started accelerating the sound smoothed.
Yeah, could be the 800 cc diesel.

re: Nano Diesel with CRDI technology coming? EDIT: Plans scrapped for now

Tata Nano Diesel Interiors Snapped
Nano diesel will be powered by a tiny 800cc Honewell sourced turbocharged diesel motor which is expected to be fairly decently powered but with mind-boggling fuel efficiency figures (expected to be ARAI rated around the range of 40kmpl)

re: Nano Diesel with CRDI technology coming? EDIT: Plans scrapped for now

This is one VERY enticing car. As far as I'm concerned, there are only two things I'll look for before deciding if or not to buy it - 1) Fuel Efficiency should be significantly higher than Petrol Nano ON ACTUAL CONDITIONS and 2) Price shouldn't be obscene. If any of the above factors are not met, it makes a lot more sense picking up a used 2012 Nano LX which should be under 1 lac by the end of 2013.

re: Nano Diesel with CRDI technology coming? EDIT: Plans scrapped for now

This thread is more than 3 years old. Quite a long time to bring in a new product, I would say. Sincerely hope that this delay has been put to good use and the final product is minus the usual "tata" niggles.

Completely agree with the timelines, it is really very long for Tata to bring out this variant. However this is a very tough proposition to get a silent and reliable oil burner onto production.

Hopefully they will bring out a niggle free and very reliable product at the end of this long wait and it would be a runaway hit from the day go!

re: Nano Diesel with CRDI technology coming? EDIT: Plans scrapped for now

To me, a 3 pot SI engine running on petrol/ CNG/ LPG would make more sense. The Nano is after all a city runabout, and in role where it seems to be having the most sales (second or third car for the family), it is unlikely to clock up a lot of miles.

I hope this diesel doesn't sound half as bad as the current petrol which sounds like a matador or some old tempo.

Wonder what the diesel vibrations could do to the already flimsy bodywork a few years down the line!

Have to disagree.

There is a huge market outside the cities. Thats were a Nano diesel will score easily. CNG/ LPG is not an easy commodity for those markets. Whereas a frugal diesel on a reliable machine will woe the masses in a jiffy.

Hi guys,

Found some specs of the nano diesel on the garret turbocharger website. They are owned by honey well.

They claim 30 kW / 40 bhp

http://garrettbulletin.com/products/tata-nano-ace

Based on the figure it's a vgt!

If this is genuine it will be a pocket rocket.

Wow, nice find! 0.8l delivering 40 bhp is sure to be a good one to drive given the light weight.
Diesel engine is one thing that can do justice to NANO and thats the delayed response from Tata for some reason.

The spec sheet reads year as 2010 and still we are to see it live :(

re: Nano Diesel with CRDI technology coming? EDIT: Plans scrapped for now

I am a sceptic when it comes to Nano in its diesel avatar. It may not remain so very cost effective. I am not sure how thrilled the market will be with a Nano that reaches or god forbid even breaches the 3 lakhs mark. Remember the diesel engine and it's weight along with turbo, its piping etc will immediately need strengthening of the holding bay as well as more space for all these paraphernalia. If the engine generates more power and results in higher top speeds then most probably even the bearings for the wheels have to be of a higher rating than what they now use. Will the current gearbox be usable with the diesel engine as well? Strongly doubt that. All these will cause a significant price rise. And of late Tata's biggest Achilles heel has been wrongly priced products. Let's see...

It will be interesting to note the NVH levels of a small capacity 3 cylinder diesel mill. I'm guessing it's not going to be brilliant.

The key words in Zappo's sentence are 'off late'.
