Wing mirror glass replacement Safari

HI, does any of you guys know where I can get a replacement Wing mirror glass from, for my Safari, I had mine smashed by an oncoming Scorpio, i changed the glass with one from a part shop in Panjim, but the mirror has no magnification, resulting in poor visibilty. According to the 2 Tata dealers in Goa, Tata only sell the full unit, not just the mirror for RS4000+ painting, a bit too much for my liking, when i only require the mirror. So is it possible to get a replacement mirror glass of original specification?

Regards,

Stefan

IMO, just search around the parts shops, someone might be having one. If not, you can do the same in Mumbai also.
You can also try the same at local mechanic who might be able to fix the problem for less cost.
If the quality is not good, then I think it will be worth spending the high amount, as I doubt the quality of other parts.
Try the local mechanic, its possible he will be having a cheaper and reasonably good quality part.

Even I've heard of the mirror only being available as a complete set.

Think of it this way. A MERCEDES BENZ glass console costs as much as MARUTI 800. The point I'm trying to make is that the glass is an intrinsic part of the whole unit and the whole functionality is lost if the unit is not bought as a whole.

If you ask me, I think its worth it. In all the vehicles I've had so far, only the SAFARI has such useable mirrors, and it is so easy to drive with those mirrors, especially the left one.

Tell some one to try chor bazaar in Mumbai they must be having a stock of these glasses. You might the original with a cheaper cost. I had bought left door mirror for my optra at just Rs. 800/-

You need to search their.

Please ask family in Bombay to check with TASC for mirror glass alone. Non TASC spares are not worth it, esp. for the Safari. Please don't ever make the mistake of putting a plain (non convex) mirror for the Safari ORVMs.

PM Steeroid - he says he's replaced a few.

Hi, I have tried most of the spare shops here in North Goa, their part range is limited, unless you have an Omni van etc...

I believe that is true, Tata only sell the complete unit, the mirror glass i bought for Rs250, was a plain mirror and didn't fit properly, I had to remove the glass from the casing and fix to the old case with silicone, this now works properly, except i didn't put the heating element back, as it has no funcion on the LX model. This mirror doesn't give me very good visibility, which is a major problem as it's on the drivers side

This seems to be the best option right now, I will ask my uncle to have a look when he's in the area and also ask my Father in laws mechanics, they must be in the know, about these things.

Stefan,
I also am facing the same problem. Luckily mine was the left side mirror. I got the plain mirror cut in the same shape and stuck with Fevi Kwik . The angle of view is reduced though. The whole thing cost me Rs. 100/-
I dont believe the new mirror is worth 4000 plus the painting unless the external part is also broken.
If you go through the Long Term ownership thread from IBM Jennifer, all the manufacturers are listed for the spares. EngineTech manufactures the mirrors for the Safari and buying it directly may save atleast 40 % than TASS. But, so far I could not find the EngineTech contact in Bangalore. Let me know if you find something on these lines

Folks, remember that the mirror is heated in the EX/VX. Maybe this is why it costs so much?

is it heated???? I thought it was just shown on Safari 2.2 which was on display at launch in the Autoshow and it did not really came that way in the actual production car...

may be I am wrong.

Stefan...i think you can also ask the TSM Body Shop to get one from a completely accidented Safari..if there is one at all and if your luck is with you,

I know Tata sells this glass for Indica at least as we bought one for my friend's indica xeta but safari....I am not too sure

Yeah, just been looking at the older related threads, my plain mirror was 250, with a fake enginetech marked backing plate, if there is no enginetech contact in Bangalore, absolutly no chance of one in Goa, still worth contacting their office to see if they will sell some mirror glass and backing plates in a small bulk order, worst that can happen is they will say no. I have just googled auto motive convex mirrors, there is a number of manufactures in India, mostly Delhi, must be able to purchase small cuts which can be cut locally.

I don't think the heating element contributes too much to the cost, other factors are there, the motorand the whole outer casing would be at least 85% of the cost.

You are wrong and also right, the heating element is there on the mirror and connected to the wiring loom, but there is no switch on the Lx version to switch it on as it's linked to the rear window heating elemnts, only on the EX and VX variants, if you were to purchase the original spare part of rear screen element for an Lx, i would bet the wiring will be there in the tailgae and also in the dash for the switch.

yes thats one possibility, if i can manage to converse with someone there who is capable of giving a straight answer!

From all accounts so far in the archives, the Safari mirror glass is not available, the aftermarket one i purchased was boxed under the brand fox. I have decided i am not parting with 4000 bucks for something that i don't require, but i fully intend to reach a successful outcome.

Thanks so far...

Just realised Enginetech are based in Aundh Pune, very near where my some of my wife's family live, should be passing through Pune within the next 2-3 months, got to be worth making enquiries with them.

I have bought a replacement which is not satisfactory, have thought about using one from a different car if available and cutting to size, just need to measure one from an innova! every vehicle i pass i am looking to see the size of mirror, maybe i should look more at commercial vehicles.
