I got the extended warranties for my Getz and i10 within a month. At the time of delivery they gave a receipt for the extended warranty.

If is being given for free, is the dealer guilty of delaying tatics?

I was just repeating the sales guy's words verbatim. I know it is not low usage. Hell, even my Splendor which I use every day hardly crosses 9000 KM in a year. And my Alto will hardly cross 5000 - 6000 KM.

It seems that they have sent a copy of invoice and the form of extended warranty to HMIL for verification; they say that this takes 6 months.

I hope that they send it within 6 months. Of course 6 months seems to be very long just to send an extended warranty.

After my i10 AT's 3rd free service, I wanted to get the 5th year powertrain only warranty over my comprehensive 3rd & 4th year warranty.

The current pricing is only for cars with manual gearboxes!! I'm pushing them to give me this.. don't want a huge hole in my pocket down the years, as we plan to keep the nifty i10 AT for some years to come.

Need some opinions here. Just booked my i20 Asta 1.2, delivery is in 10-12 days (don't ask me how!) and I'm mulling over whether I should invest Rs. 14.5k to get the comprehensive 5-year / 1,00,000km warranty on my car. I've got a document which details the inclusions and exclusions of the warranty scheme which I'll scan and upload tomorrow. I have about ten days to decide this. As of now, I have the standard two-year warranty only. Since I was considering the 2+3, I asked them to exclude the 2+2 from the price. Thought I should take an educated decision after dropping in here. Any thoughts, guys?

While the extended warranty (forget about the inclusions/exclusions for the time being) is definitely welcome, what matters is what will happen when the customer requires a warranty claim. Will it be no questions asked, or a bureaucratic process with the primary intention of denying a warranty claim.

The safari dicor 2.2 since launch is being offered with a 2+2 - 150,000 kms warranty (2 years are under the extended warranty scheme.)

I do almost 30,000 kms a year (currently on the Laura and an 8+year old safari so this kind of warranty is appreciated especially since it is on a diesel.

Also the safari would be an even better deal if they followed hyundai and introduced a 5 year no questions standard 150,000 kms warranty. It requires this considering the issues with tata cars.

Tata should do this for all their cars at no added cost.

And how do I find out? Ask them point blank? Ask someone of authority (suggest)? Or deduce from literature provided on the extended warranty application form + T&C ? Sorry to ask so many, but this is the first time I'm handling a new purchase and not dad.

Literature may provide some clues, as would the company/dealer. A major clue would be the manufacturer's reputation. Have seen/heard on this forum about manufacturer's warranty being worth very little.

I think there is a thread on this forum on warranties (extended-yes or no or something like that). That may help.

I think there are 2 types of warranties:
1. Powertrain warranties cover parts of the vehicle that make it move, such as the engine and transmission
2. Bumper to bumper warranties cover the cost of most repairs except for normal wear and tear, such as oil filters, engine oils.

Best is to check.

Very similar to the wording used on the literature.

There are two options, a bumper-to-bumper "comprehensive" warranty and a powertrain warranty which covers engine+transmission. The latter is obviously cheaper by a good margin. Anyway, I'll go through that thread, try to gather some from the dealerships and hopefully that document I'm scanning and uploading soon might shed some light on the credibility of this deal.

Hyundai is known to make decent cars.

In my opinion, extended warranties are a waste of money without knowing the manufacturer's reputation. If the manufacturer is sincere, then even without warranty, their service will take care of minor problems. If not, all extended warranties are generally useless.

In my 14 years of car ownership, I found Toyota to be the best by a long-shot. Could be because the car is expensive and hopefully has better quality. However, once the car horn was giving as much effect as a two wheeler horn. At service, mentioned this to the dealer. he checked and replaced the horn, free of cost, without any questions and on his own.

In my view an extended warranty is a double edged sword. For the high mileage drivers it is a good thing. For those who do not do a lot of distance (say under 10,000km a year) this will mean twice yearly service, oil change etc. at the HASS. If you vector in the extra cost involved then whether the warranty is really worth it is an open question! Also, with say 40,000 on the clock what is normal wear and tear and what is not is always a debatable point.

As for customer care in my experience they just forward to the dealer that such and such has a complaint and never bother to read it. I had problems with the rear dampers of my Accent and wrote to customer care. I was contacted by the dealer within a day and the problem was fixed. So as a matter of courtesy I sent customer care a thank you note. Again I got a call from the dealer that what has gone wrong! Need I say more.

My Accent is 9 years old @ 1,36,000km (87,000 of those were clocked in the first 4 years) and my Corolla is almost 5 years old @ 1,06,000km. THat extended warranty is starting to make sense.
