The cheapest that I paid is Rs 28 when I was doing my 12th thats why I used to get petrol for my moped.

We all considered petrol as gold for that prices, I restricted my moped usage only for special purposes.

What hit me most going through the replies on this thread is how much our rides have changed! From Lunas, Chetaks/Priyas, 'Lamretas' (deliberately mis-spelt), Aventi Garellis, Vickys, Panthers/Pacers and TVS 50s in the 80s and even 90s, how quickly so many of us now choose 150cc bike or even a car as an entry level vehicle. During the same period, Americans have moved from 2 ton hunks of metal to far less falmboyant Priuses!

I find this Indian story most remarkable. Almost like a big bang.

Indeed its remarkable, I remember reading something for a comparison, China changed from being a cycle country to a car country within one generation.

I remember paying 20 rs, must have been around 1996/7. During college, we invariably were traveling triple seat for short distances and I vividly remember turning off the bike at slopes to increase mileage. more bang for the buck!

1990, something like 15 Rs for petrol. With 100 Rs, I almost got a full tank in my Kinetic Honda, and that lasted me for almost the whole month And my dad thought I wasted too much money on it...

It was in '93 when petrol prices were Rs 17 per litre and diesel at Rs 10 per litre.
Have seen Dad filling up diesel full tank in Mahindra Armada for mere 500 bucks
But I believe these rates were normal with respect to the economic conditions in India at that time.

I remember that in 1972 when my dad used to fill petrol in our new Premier Padmini car, we used to get 7.1 litres of petrol for Rs.10/-. Subsequently somewhere in the eighties I remember getting the same 7.1 litres for Rs.100/-. Thereafter things were going only skywards.

In 1996-7 ,My father paid Rs 100 and approx 4.5 litres of petrol was filled in the car.In those days it was around Rs 26 per litre( all prices are for Delhi)

But just 5 years later petrol cost went up by Rs 7 to reach Rs 33 per litre. This was when oil was trading at $20 a barrel.

Now I am paying approx Rs 53 per litre. In last 8 years price of fuel has shot up by nearly Rs 20.I wonder what will be the price in next 5 years?

Re: Let's go back in history: What's the cheapest price of Petrol/Diesel that you pai

Well, I remember my dad filling diesel for his Sierra and it used to be 18-20 /litre, may be 13-14 yrs ago.
And there was this incident when I filled petrol for Rs.6! I mean not a litre, but about 12 yrs back I used to ride a Bajaj Endura which had very low mileage figures and I was always low on my pocket money and believe it or not we used to fill petrol for 20 rs mostly and that got us nearly half a litre then and the petrol bunk guys wouldnt crib, coz that was a regular sight with college going folks.

I remember my Dad paying Rs 7/liter for Diesel in Tata Sumo (our first vehicle) in 1997-98.
Petrol was then priced at Rs 22/liter.

Found this on the web - TABLE-India's petrol, diesel, kerosene and LPG prices | Reuters

I almost distinctly remember paying Rs. 8.52 for a litre of petrol in Assam during the time I rode a Luna very sparingly (folks wouldn't let me - i'd have to sneak out!).
