Its not only about road but also about driving sense.

Even if the govt provides good roads how will you handle people on bikes/ cycles scratching your brand new high end car trying to squeeze in, other four wheelers nudging on your bumpers and not to mention people opening their car doors and not worrying about banging it into the car parked next to it.

Its a real sorry state.

If you go by what the car is capable of, there are few cars in India that regularly get tested to even close to their limits. But that is hardly a reason for an enthusiast to get a more powerful car or to modify his car for more zip. Many people who can comfortably afford exotics get them just for the knowledge that they are driving something that can burn the road, and perhaps given the right opportunity, they try it out.

The condition of roads in India has always been bad. If you go by that, your dream of owning a good car will never come true. You can curse the government which is too busy tripping over itself just trying to stay upright for the five years it has. Or you can take your chances with the car of your dreams. So, I for one, do not blame any of the show offs for buying Rolls Royces and Lamborghinis in India. Its your life. Live it to the full.

why even talk about super luxury premium marques like BMW, MERC, FERRARI..

even "regular " cars like ACCORD, CAMRY, or a OCTAVIA 1.8 or coming down one more segment - OHC VTEC/1.5 dont get to taste their true potential in 99% of driving situations....so why do people buy them ??

this is a VERY VERY common phenomenon not just for cars for practically every gadget we use..

how many of us use our computers to the fullest potential?!!!, TVs, DVD players, washing machine, list is endless....

think about it - even our education - how many of us are using the degrees we got to the fullest extent in our jobs...

But yes Advocatus - you have a point - there is little point in buying a great car in India, there are very few places you can drive/enjoy it.

Forget these expensive one, down here at bangalore its difficult to even drive the honda city's , and fiesta's and the likes without getting a few dents and bumps all over either coz of pot holes or crash with other vehicles driven by reckless ...... holes. Especially the auto guys.

i have a different take on this. for a lot of people, car is not all about speed. it is a comfortable and safe means of commuting. so luxury and safety are more important than power/speed. in a crawling traffic on a mid summer afternoon, you are better off in an S class than in a non AC-M800. where as M800 also does a good job on a pleasant morning highway cruise.

so enjoy the benifits of a good AC, suspension, lower NVH, comfortable seats, ICE and so on...

People do buy Mont Blancs and Waterman's and most of them do not do much beyond signing with them. In fact, I have seen a few who have such pens though they can't afford them. To them these are not even status symbols. They are just things they have always cherished. Writing with a well balanced fountain pen is a joy (even in this day of emails and typed letters). A nice car would be much the same.

I too would have bought a 20+ lac car if it came with a road which it deserves to be driven it on... :)

All these Super Cars are coming to india because many people here can now afford to buy such cars.. Its just business.. they all know we dont have roads good enough to drive them around.

I understand the rationale for why people buy these cars in India - but those reasons don't apply to me. If I have an expensive car I want to enjoy it. And I want to keep it well. I don't think I can do that in India.
There was the example here about Mont Blanc pens. At least you have a shirt pocket to put it. I dont even have proper parking outside my office! The cars are parked on the footpath outside the building in the heart of Lutyen's Delhi. You think I'm going to buy a Beemer in such a situation?

So true man, so true. However everytime I say this, my colleagues think I am mad, they think driving in US is nirvana, as most of them have not driven in india for the fear of hitting something they say (but the real reason is that, which they dont say, they did not have a car to play with in the first place!)

its funny the way i see it is when we dint have all these cars we went like wish we had them in india that time no one thought about all this and now they are here then people are going where will we ride them. first let them come roads will follow unless ambani is made prime minister before that.

That's a very strange view coming from someone who says they have lived in the UK. Broadly, there are three types of roads:

1. Inner city subject to 30mph (and rightly so) limit
2. Motorways
3. A mixture of national highway speed limit roads in the countryside.

Motorways are simply a means of getting from A-B and nothing else. If driving is something you find pleasurable, then a lot of national speed limit roads in the Cotswolds, Wales and Scotland are fantastic.

I have owned an F355 and currently a 944 Turbo and I have enjoyed both these machines immensely off track - both being too expensive to run as track toys.

I recently went on a 3 day tour of the Highlands with friends and covered 1600 miles in the time. We hardly saw a car and regular did 70-80 per hour over wonderful roads surfaces for hours on end. Occasionally, a safe, straight bit of road would tempt one to push for the higher top-end, but the real joy is sampling the wonderful handling these cars offer. Trust me, it all comes alive over 50mph, you don't need to be doing 100mph plus to have a good time.

As I have said before, you are clearly not driving in the right place. A motorway is basicaly an auto-express. You turn up, switch on and keep the car in a straight line.

The A and B roads for which Britain is famous are some of the best driving roads in the world. Boring is certainly not somehting that comes to mind.

Which is very sad.

Because the country has so much to offer! Imagine if Indian roads were kept in the kind of condition they are in Scotland (which is driving heaven)? I for one would organise driving tours. India offers unparrellled country side and some "ghat" roads are fantastic. The experience is completely marred by the fact you can't do 10mph becuase you crack your sump on the hideous potholes and stones left by truckers.
