Re: Good schools in India for vehicle design?

The thing is that ISD and DYP both accept non science students which is a relieve but I really am quite sceptical about the ones in the west.
Can anyone please let me know what I need to be doing now and what should I expect in future? What is the eligibility criteria abroad? Do you feel that I should also do some other "conventional " course before?[/quote]

Hope you have found some information about this, if not here goes. I am a professional motorcycle designer in Austria so I would like to clear some myths in the journey of becoming a designer.

Regarding eligibility criteria. No, you do not require science background. As rightly mentioned in this thread do look up www.cardesignnews.com and other websites to know where you stand and for tips.

Another very important thing in today's extremely competitive world is the relevance of getting a foreign design degree, there are colleges in India itself offering quality design education, namely DSK in pune, MIT and NID. I myself graduated from NID years ago and the quality of education provided there was better than what I experienced in Italy. Having said that the best schools in the world are Umea in Sweden, Pforzheim in Germany and if you can afford it, Art center in pasadena, USA and also CCS in Detroit.

Please be careful in spending huge money to just get a degree from a european school ( the glory days of Italian design are long gone )as landing a job afterwards is extremely competitive and difficult, choose a school based on where they offer internships, any associations with the industry and lastly the quality of the faculty.

finally be prepared for an extremely hard and unforgiving path, I don't know any Indian who has had it easy in becoming a successful designer, but it is one of the most satisfying careers out there.

It is very important. Since the time Design has become a profession, a degree is the first thing being asked during the job interviews.
Someone from engineering may get into the field but that would be mostly in Alias (3D software). From there, one can move up the ladder within the organisation.

The first step would be of course an internship, however people do go around that and directly land a job. All the best!

Brother! Science is not required. A good design portfolio and passing the entrance examinations is all that is required. All the best!

I passed out of IED in 2009. They don't ask for science. Many don't, some do due to university policies they are recognised by.

Anyway, you don't need it for becoming a designer. All you need is a portfolio to begin with.

All the previous notifications of this thread went to my check_it_once_6_months email hence missed them all.
Well, IED is a good school. the best thing is that it has a huge competition from students coming from all over the globe. But there are better schools out there, like RCA, Umea, Pforzheim etc

Car / auto / transport / product design career aspirants ... required reading !

I couldn't find a thread where an aspiring car designer could go, to learn more about making a career in this field.

Mods, in case there is a thread existing already, please feel free to merge the below with that ... or even relocate the thread, if it is in the wrong place.

I came across this series of interesting articles, which I believe should be required reading for design career aspirants.

How to be a car designer Pt1:
Turning passion into a profession
http://www.cardesignnews.com/article...-car-designer/

How to be a car designer Pt2:
Starting design school
http://www.cardesignnews.com/article...ign-portfolio/

How to be a car designer Pt3:
Going to design school
http://www.cardesignnews.com/article...design-school/

The series continues, and is being carried by the venerable Car Design News magazine as well, so stay tuned.

Cheers,

FourWheelDrift
