Are there any kit cars in india? replicas built on another car's chassis? Are they legal in india? they seem to be in all other countries....

I don't think it is legal in India unless you have written permission from manufacturer.

There was one Lamborginhi in my college days somewhere in 1996-1997 red colour,i had seen it many times,used to be in Khar in some building,where i had gone to see it personally with couple of my friends,but havnt seen now for some years,I still couldnt figure out on which chassis was it built on.Weathe it was Indian or was imported built.

The Late Kari of Coimbatore tried his hands at kit cars in India. There was a company that showed a sports car called 'Quantum' a few years back. Had a FRP body with a Ford Engine. Dont know what happened to the company.

there is also a kitted Ford GT40 in delhi which was white first and is presently red in colour

its good to have kitted cars if the particular car is extinct

I was just wondering if one was to import a kit car, with or without an engine installed in the car, what are the duty and other taxes levied on such cars by the government in India.
There are beautifully made kit cars available all over the world and as these could easily be imported without an engine and a decent engine could be bought and installed in these cars once its been imported, would this actually be a feasible way of importing a car ?

Probably will not happen, there are way too many laws against it and add to that copyright infringement. How about you make your own kit car?

You could import the kit car in pieces and save what you can on duty. However, I doubt any RTO will allow it to be registered as a road-going car. Either you'll have to restrict its use to track days / private property or (as others have done) use the chassis number of a herald / Contessa / similar old car and run it on the same registration plate.

If one were to import a kit, what kind of duty would it attract? How would one import panels, they would know its for a kit!!!

You will need to ensure the wheelbase etc is the same as in the RC book. Tht's ow the local stretched limo's are getting dinged by the RTO
