Looks nice, but would have preferred if the car had retained it's original looks.
The restored car does not look anywhere near the original. Though the new looks make it user friendly, it takes away the original charm of the SS80.

Anyone could have done this resto-mod to any car. It should have been rebuilt to stock with the colour retained as well.

Re: Maruti Suzuki SS80 DX

We used to own a 1986 Maruti 800 SB308. My father sold it in 2004.

I badly want to get it back into the family. But I'm unable to locate it's registration details using Parivahan services. The car had an old style registration - 3 alphabets and 4 numbers.

I need help with two things.
1) Is there a way to search these old registration numbers
2) If I am able to find and get it back. How is the availability of spares to restore the car back to its glory?

Many thanks in advance.

The parts for SB308 are all still available .
Obviously all pre89 registered cars will be having the 3 letter registration number. If it is not in Vahan data base, you can approach the rto where it was registered and find out the status.

Re: Maruti Suzuki SS80 DX

Just started work on an SS80 I picked up before lockdown. The work involves a complete tune up and overhaul of the necessary mechanicals. Engine, full carb tune and service, alternator, starter motor, transmission, suspension etc. The car was already being used as a daily driver for a while, but I decided to do it up anyway.

The car already had some rust here and there which the previous owner decided to just put a coat of paint over. So that has some bubbles now. I'll do the car up perfectly mechanically, and then approach the painting if I have to. Whatever can be rubbed and rust-treated, will be done during this major service anyway. The car is in BLR and I am in HYD. I will go pick it up once it's done and drive it back to Hyd. Should be fun.

Who's working on the mechanicals in BLR, would you recommend their services?

Excellent restoration and mods, very neatly done. And what brilliant body line they have achieved, this is something which is lacking in many of the rebuilds.

It's the first time I've gone to them. It's called Pioneer Garage in Shivaji Nagar. I can share the owner's number if you'd like. Third generation family run garage is what I'm told. They restore vintage cars. I'll have a lot more details of their work when I actually travel to Bangalore from Hyderabad to go pick my car up. I'm hoping it'll inspire enough confidence for me to do the 600 km back in it

Re: Maruti Suzuki SS80 DX

All mechanical work has been completed. This included:
1. Carb servicing, tuning.
2. Radiator overhaul.
3. Alternator and starter motor both overhauled.
4. Choke cable re-connected.
5. All hoses replaced.
6. Brakes overhaul.
7. Suspension bar bush.
8. Steering rack removal and re-fitting.
9. Wiring organized and re-routed.
10. Boot side panel wrapping replaced.
11. Replacement of speedo glass.
12. Recalibration of fuel gauge, and tightening of speedo needle wobble.

The delivery of the car was taken 2 days ago by my cousin. Half crank start, perfect idling, crisp and clean drive are all pros. Some points to note include, slightly tough to engage 2nd gear from 1st (with one sweep down movement from 1st to 2nd). It has to be 1st to N, then N to 2nd in two phases. Not sure of the technical difference between a synchromesh and a non-synchro mesh gearbox. But oldies such as this have to be driven with a loving hand. Ride is ok considering the upsized 13's. Steering is decently light after the work done (earlier it was quite tough) and considering the wider larger tires. Water drops from exhaust instantly upon ignition, which shows good health. The car is nimble and fun to drive in the city.

Brakes fail to inspire confidence, even though this 1984 comes with factory fitted front disc brakes. The mechanic suggested fitting a booster. This isn't a small job and will involve removing the engine, tapping into the intake for vacuum, etc.

There is some rusting near the firewall and other places. I was recommended that it may not be the safest idea to drive this car alone with the said rusting from BLR to HYD by highway. I've included pictures of the rusting.

The car has a factory fitted AC, which has been disconnected from the start by the previous owner. It obviously needs a full AC service and checkup for reconnecting it. I'm not sure how it will affect the engine upon turning on. It' something I've left for phase 2.

Here are some pictures of the car and the rust details.

PS: Interior works are not yet done except the roof lining replacement from an Omni. Seat covers, floor carpeting, gear stick repainting, and dash polish and treatment, glovebox hinge, etc.

Re: Maruti Suzuki SS80 DX

I remember seeing an SS80 being driven out of a Maruti ASS 5-6 years back. Does MASS still service the SS80? How are the parts availability?

Yes they still do. Since most of the mechanicals are shared with SB308, it's easily available if needed.
