Yes I'm keenly following the thread. Just 'added goodies' won't cut it. The segment has huge scope and Tata has off late been not offering well deserved upgrades to Tiago or Altroz. Keeping fingers crossed

I never understood why Tata did not follow the Nexon strategy of offering the Turbo charger as a standard for all Petrol and Diesel variants of Altroz.

I found value in the Nexon for just two reasons :
1. Turbo Petrol
2. 16 Inch wheels as standard

I chose the Nexon at a premium for just these two reasons over the Altroz. I really liked the Altroz for its impressive leg room, sturdy build quality and the Alpha platform with all the safety that comes along, but somehow did not find it 'Value for Money' in the Altroz.

I agree that Citroen deserves some attention and love in India. But expecting Kiger range of numbers isn't realistic because of following reasons.

1. Renault has 400+ showrooms in India, while Citroen has 90+.
2. There is a chance that Renault is getting repeated customers and people looking for upgrade from Kwid etc.
3. There is lot of cross shopping between Kiger and Magnite.
4. Not sure today, but Kiger was offered in various powertrain/engine combinations, along with CNG.

Citroen should've targeted 5 star in crash tests to grab our attention. Unfortunately, no one is seeing Citroen as European car.

Re: March 2025 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

With so many models in their backyard, surprising to see VW struggling with 2 models in Indian volume segment. Because of this, they are neither identifying themselves with volume churners nor with premium segment. Not everyone who wants to buy a VW car may want to buy a Virtus or Taigun. Always their strategy in India has been very slow. They need to be more aggressive with more models being made in India for India. I have seen dealers struggling with low numbers. If VW is not enabling their dealers in business with good revenue and margin, it is going to be tougher going for.

Any reason for this large jump. Unable to hypothesise why this would happen.
KIA EV6 (~50 --> 500)
Toyota Vellfire (less than 100 --> 350)

Would most customers opt for a hatchback over a compact SUV for a turbo engine & larger alloys? I honestly doubt it. While personally I agree with your choice, the aam aadmi wants butch looking pseudo SUVs

Škoda is having a winner at their hands “Kylaq”. Kushaq sales have dwindled post Kylaq arrival. Elevate is unable to elevate itself and Kylaq is ruling the roost. VW numbers are funny. Time for them to launch cousin of Kylaq.

Re: March 2025 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Surprisingly, there is no Maruti at the top after some time. Hyundai's lone warrior, the Creta, claimed the top spot for this month. The Creta moved from the number 3 spot to number 1, with a 10% month-on-month gain in sales.

Last month's leader, the Maruti Fronx, dropped to the number 10 spot. What happened there? Should we call the Fronx a one-month wonder?

Once a leader, the Maruti Alto continues to hold its position in the Top 20 list. This month, it gained a few positions to stay at number 15. The state of small cars continues to remain bleak, with only five A and B segment cars in the Top 20 list. However, it is nice to see the Tata Tiago featuring in that list, as otherwise it is predominantly Maruti cars. Maruti continues to dominate the Top 10 count with six models in the list. This month, surprisingly, it is not entirely Maruti in the Top 5, as the Tata Punch squeezed into the mix along with the usual player, the Creta.

Hyundai continues to have only the Creta in the Top 5, with one more car, the Venue, in the Top 15 list. The outlook continues to remain bleak for the manufacturer that held the number 2 position for so long. The only saving grace is that the Creta holds the top position.

The Tata Punch jumped to the number 3 spot from last month's number 10 spot. Besides the Punch, the Tata Nexon retained its number 7 position this time. Good news for Tata includes the addition of the Tata Tiago in the Top 20 list. Unfortunately, those are the only cars from Tata in the Top 20 list. Again, not an ideal situation for a manufacturer aiming for the number 2 position.

While Hyundai and Tata continue to have only two or three cars each in the Top 20 list, this time Mahindra also managed to get only three cars into the Top 20. The Scorpio regained a few positions to reach number 9. It appears that Mahindra is making significant efforts to make an impact in the Top 10 list, but in my opinion, they still have a long way to go to challenge the top performer. With the recent acquisition of the number 2 manufacturer spot, I guess they are on the right track.

The ZS EV and Hilux showed a significant rise compared to last month's numbers. What could be the reason?

Also, multiple Maruti cars showed a decline compared to last month's numbers, like the Maruti Celerio and Maruti Fronx. Should Maruti be worried?

There has been a sudden rise in Toyota Vellfire's numbers this month compared to last month. Have people suddenly taken an interest in it?

Very true. In the last few years, consumers started moving towards taller and larger hatchbacks.
One of my cousins jokingly said, "I would never call the segment 'Compact SUV', and would call it larger hatchback. I totally agree with that statement.

However, I sometimes wonder, if all consumers demanded larger butch looking hatchbacks, wouldn't companies discontinue the likes of Swift, Fronx, i10, i20, Tiago, Altroz etc? Why I say this is because there are large hatchbacks available in their respective segments and price points in this crowded market.

IMHO there will always be a market for good old hatchbacks that will be competitive enough to offer their best, to appeal to certain market segments who would prefer them over wanna be SUVs.

I have mentioned it somewhere but Maruti does Inventory management for its models. It produces a lot of cars, keeps them stored at factory and decides according to demand which car to be sent to dealership

A low slung traditional hatchbacks is becoming impractical now, its not good as an urban runabout since urban population is now a bit extra healthy. Its not easy to even open the door wide in parking lots anymore to crawl out of them.

All in all, some need will remain - like the i20 N line However the moment all the companies figure out their own Punch, its game over for hatchbacks from a use case perspective.

Re: March 2025 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

It is sad, though not surprising, to see the Harrier + Safari twins doing 10% of the volume of Scorpio + XUV700 + Thar triplets despite having such a capable product.

IMO, it primarily has to do with their pricing strategy. When I was in the market for an SUV some 6 months back - I was amazed at the premium Tata pricing (Harrier was effectively 2.5L more expensive than ScorpioN). And then there were silly add-ons: an extra 50k for Black colour, moving to an even more expensive variant if you wanted leatherette seats etc. And in my personal opinion, the new Harrier look is not an upgrade from the outgoing model.

Re: March 2025 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Quite surprised ro see Currv has had 6 months of steady 4-5k sales.

Am yet to see one on road in Bangalore. All have seen are test drive and temporary registered vehicles
