Re: Maruti Suzuki introduces updated Grand Vitara: to get 6 airbags and 6-speed AT with AWD!

I can already sense BNCAP/GNCAP results of the Grand Vitara to be released soon, expecting full 5 stars or atleast a 4.

Reason: Last year's goofup by Maruti and BNCAP, where they sent 2 Airbag equipped model to BNCAP, and which impacted (perhaps) the ratings.

What was more embarrassing for Maruti was that the pictures of the supposed test were leaked online, clearly showing all kinds of tests being done (including side pole test) on the GV. Although both the 2 and 6 airbags versions of the car were tested, the 2 airbag version must have taken down the ratings downhill.

But was it ethical on part of BNCAP and Maruti not to release the ratings then ? Even if it meant lower ratings ? I don't think so !

I have a strong feeling there is more to it than not having side airbags. Cars with seat H-points as high as the Grand Vitara’s usually do quite well in BNCAP/GNCAP’s ancient side barrier impact, airbags or not. And the pole test is always done with optional airbags anyway. Until October this year, BNCAP requires only 50% production volume to have curtain airbags for 5 stars, and any one variant for 4.

The fact that Toyota have announced structural changes practically confirms that for me. I really wonder where the changes are.

In all probability, BNCAP will release the results for both the old and new versions together. At least that is what GNCAP does when manufacturers commit to making changes immediately after a bad result (eg. Kwid, Carens, Mobilio, Zest, Polo, Dzire)

My understanding is that both BNCAP and GNCAP give manufacturers an option to improve their vehicles(BEFORE publishing the results) if the test results are not as good as they expected. Then, it's up to the manufacturer to decide whether to take action or not.

Mahindra stopped selling Thars with side-facing seats after the GNCAP 5-star test results were published. Obviously, that version wouldn't have scored 4 or 5 stars. I'm sure that decision was based on GNCAP's recommendation.

Good to know 6 airbags is standard now!

Grand Vitara has become my premium taxi favourite recently. 6 airbags as standard will make it a brilliant, safe choice!

Only wishlist (atleast from a backseat perspective) is to have slightly softer padding for the backseat.

True. Very unlikely considering the popularity in the taxi market and also high sales in the NCR region.

Has Maruti removed the spare wheel from updated Grand Vitara ? There is a mention of tyre repair kit in the new brochure.

Excited about Grand Vitara All Grip AT. Is it possible also tuned the engine for All grip AT? What are your thoughts? Also what would be difference between Alpha and Alpha O variants? I didnt find details on their website.

Looks like heavy inspiration from Tata’s massive variant line up approach.

The Japanese must be banging their heads. They were dead against incorporating sunroof initially in any Indian models, and now they’re having to make it optional. I am sure even a large chunk of customers must have realized how useless these things are and the challenges associated with them. Will be interesting to now see the contribution of sunroof vs non sunroof versions of the same variants.

Elated to see the AWD AT. Should have been launched from day one. Although the price hike seems very steep for this. Will make for a very good long distance car across terrain.

Maruti Suzuki has discontinued the CNG variants of the GV with this update. Interestingly, Hyryder still gets the option of CNG!
