Well, I feel that way about power-assisted steering! It is actually useless at over 5kph, and, although it helps when parking, it just encourages us to wear the tyres by moving them when the car is stationary. And it must be quite an expensive sub-assembly. But it has become a standard, and those of us who would happily pay less for a car without it must be a small minority.

As for the heated seats, in Chennai, that's a joke (along with panormic sun roof, etc) but maybe not up north. And, I guess, with a CBU, it is more expensive to remove it than to leave it in the spec.

Re: VW Tiguan R Line to be launched on April 14. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 49 lakhs

Unpopular opinion that may rile up some folks.
Having looked at so many VW cars in UK and Europe, I feel the only two things that are going for them are the explosive TSi engines and superior build/parts quality. In terms of looks/design, they are too simple, and don't have that 'timeless' vibe going on.

Honestly, If Tata upped their game with high quality plastics, seats, and exceptional fit and finish, the Curvv/Harrier easily looks better than the Tiguan R-Line.

No E20 compliance?!

As usual a half baked effort by VW auto. Really shows their step-motherly treatment towards India. Dead on arrival for this single reason. Why anyone would ignore this is beyond my scope of imagination. The hope is that the CKD Kodiaq would be E20 compliant.

Re: VW Tiguan R Line to be launched on April 14. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 49 lakhs

Ground clearance of 176 mm!! Even sedans are doing better.

Atleast stitching of seats should be in accordance to the paint of car. I will prefer a red sporty car seat stitch and on doors and dashboard.

200 HP now we are getting at half price in XUV700. Why VW didnt give a powerful 265 HP? Kodiaq VRS seems to get that.

A 7 seat option like All Space would be a big welcome.

Re: VW Tiguan R Line to be launched on April 14. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 49 lakhs

I think looking at the feature miss (seat ventilation, powered seats, rear blinds, E20 compliance etc.) and still on-road pricing of around 60 lakh, I will buy XEV 9E and XUV700 Petrol automatic each in the same overall price. Lets be realistic :-)

  • Not E20 Compliant
  • No Ventilated Seats (my friend here in Germany is driving a 2017 Kodaiq which has both heated & ventilated seats)

Good luck to the prospective buyers at 60 lacs OTR!

Those alloys look more or less like the one on Alcazar. Is it the same vendor?

Reg: E20 complaince failure, remember VW group uses us mostly as a dumping ground to dump cars they have unsold somewhere else or the last batch before a generation change. No way they will invest on these cars to make it India specific.

Re: VW Tiguan R Line to be launched on April 14. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 49 lakhs

@Ajmat perhaps you are right. But if it's a cost thing then it should be more prevalent in lower priced cars and not the expensive ones.

I think there is some "poshness" to having "cute dials" and buttons which I have been seeing in mostly expensive "luxury" models.

Jeep Wrangler has a handy stick shift (for auto as well).
Jeep Grand Cherokee has a "cute dial".

VW Tiguan has a handy stick shift.
VW Tiguan R Line has this Indicator Lever like thingy.

But Tiguan at 60 lakhs on road in Mumbai without 4X4 is well, ahem, brave. I can get a robust Fortuner for that money.
Even the wheels look thin for 200 bhp.

At this price, the Kodiaq is perhaps a better buy.

@Jeroen : I was looking at photos of the Citroen 2CV, I am not sure I found the right one, but what you describe, is so funny.

When I am driving, I like to look at the road and not fiddle with dials and buttons and touch screens and let muscle memory do a lot of tasks. One day, those large cheap iPad like thingies will also go. Well I hope they do.

SideNote: In 20 years timeframe, I have noticed Indian car pices rose to 3X times. Example, my father's City 2005 costed him 6.8l that time, now its nearabouts 17l to 22l. Fortuner was 19l in 2009, now its 50l-55l, CR-V (CBU) 2005 was 16l to 17l (I was a kid drooling over it in showrrom when father went to book his CITY), that CR-V today would have been 45-52l. If I play the devils's advocate, VW has priced it okay especially considering its a CBU.

Must add- Electric seats, 360 cam, Power tailgate and Cooled seats should have been there and I wouldnt touch a car if it costs above 20l and misses these mandatory for me key features. Also, 260Hp version should been launched as now even XUV700 gets 200hp at almost half the price with 7 seats too!

I see the Octavia Vrs is not made in the UK either, so going by this same formula, the Vrs in UK is around GBP 39,000 for the 2.0 TSI, does that mean we get an approximate 37 lakh price point ? Not sure about the Co2 calculations of the Skoda compared to the Tiguan.

Highly unlikely with the Vrs price point considering the last one's pricing but that would make for a decent deal.

Re: VW Tiguan R Line to be launched on April 14. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 49 lakhs

I was really looking forward to buy this one as a serious upgrade from my 2020 1.4L Creta, was all set to finally move to my first German car. But the moment I realized it’s missing three basic features:

Powered seat adjustment

Powered tailgate

360° camera

…I kinda said no way, not in this lifetime.

I have been driving Korean cars for over 14 years now—started with the i10, then i20, i20 Active, and now the Creta. So yeah, I’ve definitely gotten used to a certain level of convenience and features.

Paying 60+ lakhs on-road in Bangalore and still having to manually adjust the driver seat? Just can’t wrap my head around that. Doesn’t feel right for that price point.

Actually, now the Hyundai Tucson in its AWD Diesel avatar, retailing at ₹35.9 odd lakhs ex-showroom, excluding discounts, looks to be a value for money offering! That 2.0 litre diesel in the Tucson is pleasantly grunty and packs in quite a wallop in the mid range. Refinement is very impressive as well.

So they probably did not go to the hassle of getting it retrofitted. Though, if it does get locally built, I'd expect them to actually put cooled seats instead of heated seats.

The 360 camera? That I've got no clue why they skipped that one.
My 2018 Skoda Superb has both. This is just a poor excuse to ship whatever they want without a single thought.

I completely understand the sentiment of not putting more into a car but then these folks should not complain when the market rejects them.

VW should have at least brought in the 265bhp tuned R-Line variant at this price point and probably most, if not all, of the shortcomings could have been overlooked.
But this cosmetic R-Line is neither here nor there - it neither has the engine nor the features.

Other than these three features, the car is very well loaded. DCC is a very advanced feature which even BMW sparingly only offers these days - the new 5 series does not offer DCC, while the old one did. How many times does one adjust the driver seat, except if you are chauffered during the weekdays and take the wheel yourself in weekends , t should not be an issue. Powered tailgate is gimmicky and I avoid using it even in cars which have it, as it can cause accidents especially with kids around, if one is not careful. The two real misses IMO, are 360 degree camera (the car does have 6 front parking sensors though) and ventilated seats.

I wish the Tucson would look less hideous. The over-sharp cuts and creases and those shark fin like grill elements briefly came into fashion five years ago and just as quickly disappeared from fashion, as more rounded elements started to dominate the best looking cars globally. Even Hyundai had dropped the over-sharp stuff in their newer designs and gone for a mix of straight edges and curves. The Tuscon is the odd one out in their line-up up these days in terms of looks.

Fully agree. The Kodiaq RS is coming this fall as a CBU, with the full blown 265 HP treatment. It will be more expensive (probably 59 -60 lakh ex-showroom), but will get the true RS treatment. May be worth waiting for. The latest Autocar magazine had a review of it and the beast does 0-100 in a little over 6 seconds.

Re: VW Tiguan R Line to be launched on April 14. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 49 lakhs

Quite honestly, ICE vehicles are looking less and less interesting at these price points . The new “born” EV options may be more suitable in the coming days as a halo product. And then again, it has been equipped with nothing more than good chassis, dynamic ride/handling and a half decent engine. I’d take a 1.5 Taigun for third of the price, with the same attributes. And a couple of extra features. But then there are also the Currv/Creta EVs!
