Toyota has launched a new variant of the Fortuner Legender 4x4. The SUV is now available with a manual transmission option priced at Rs 46.36 lakh (ex-showroom).



The Fortuner Legender 4x4 is powered by a 2.8-litre diesel engine that produces 201 BHP and 420 Nm. It gets Toyota’s four-wheel drive system and is now offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox for a more engaging driving experience.

The Fortuner Legender has a unique exterior design compared to the Fortuner. It features Catamaran-inspired front and rear bumpers, and a sleek front grille with piano black accents. It has quad-LED headlamps with LED DRLs and sequential turn indicators. The SUV rides on 18-inch alloy wheels.

The Fortuner Legender 4x4 MT comes with a dual-tone interior with Black and Maroon upholstery with contrast stitching on the steering wheel and centre console. The SUV is equipped with an 11-speaker JBL sound system, ventilated seats in the front and ambient lighting.

I wonder if someone in India who is paying that price would actually use it for real off-road purposes and be interested in a manual variant. When I previously inquired about the regular Fortuner's manual 4x4 MT variant at the showroom, they mentioned it's now available only on an order basis. So, this new information about the Legender offering a manual 4x4 version is quite surprising.

Guess it is regional market based. Petrol versions of the Innova, Innova Crysta and Fortuner were made to order for Kerala market, while it was available off the shelf in NCR.

Interior/ rural parts of Tamilnadu prefer manual gearboxes and reading posts from BHPians in Uttar Pradesh, manual gearbox is preferred in rural UP too.

Also most of the time, Toyota dealers in Kerala (like every dealer) will dissuade you from selecting slow moving variants/colours citing various reasons. Put your foot down, and magically the vehicle is on a container loaded from Bengaluru.

You’re right. Most dealers in Kerala simply lie, claiming that production has stopped. I had a similar experience when I inquired about the Gypsy at Maruti dealerships in 2012 and again with Toyota regarding a manual transmission. Initially, the executive told me that manual Fortuners were out of production, but when I insisted on a manual transmission, he admitted that they were made on*an*order*basis.

The end of this generation of the Fortuner is coming near, Toyota India in the past year or so have launched the Leader Edition (Legender Interiors w/ Regular Fortuner Exterior + Bodykit), next came the Legender+ (basically a Legender with a Bodykit) and today they’ve introduced a Manual gearbox in the Legender.

It’s mostly a stock clearing move to get the Mild Hybrid version into India, before the Next Gen model arrives.
