I've worked closely with Mr. Mehrotra, and while he's a decent guy, he’s just not a "car person." Long-term, I’m not sure how a car company can thrive with someone at the top who doesn’t really get cars—or the emotions behind them. He’s brilliant at crafting business cases that look flawless on paper, but when it comes to execution and reading the pulse of the consumer, that’s not his strong suit. Just look at the 2nd-gen Figo and Aspire.

I vividly recall a conversation where he compared the Nexon to the Creta because "both have touchscreens" and "both are SUVs," concluding Creta’s success was all about marketing. That logic left me speechless.

Ford India shuttered under his watch, and TML's CV export business, which he led, has stumbled (though in fairness, Girish Wagh had a hand in that too). I really hope MG doesn't run into similar issues. They’ve built something solid and have great momentum, but now...I’m not so sure.

That said, I’ll still be rooting for him—because we need MG to keep shaking things up.

One thing that also surprises me was why MG never bought their smaller cars or their hybrid system to India

This really is a very important point many a times Automobile companies miss taking a note of. Unlike many other businesses, Automobiles has the "human passion" element that perhaps is one of the key ingredients.

While many a great leaders have manages successful switches between industry verticals, especially in Retail, IT and Manufacturing, the same has seldom held well for Automobiles, especially the PPV (Personal Passenger Vehicle) segment.

OT: In the same breath, it is worth mentioning Late Nigel Harris who was the MD at Ford India before moving to China's Chengen plant. One of the industry veterans and responsible for Ford's rise in many countries.

For those who do not know, he passed away last year. RIP.

He was considered one of the versatile leaders in the industry. Figo was introduced during his tenure. Able to develop a good relationship and In fact, met him when he came to open a new dealership and he was very communicative. A few emails regarding building child spares and a lot of feedback about the service and the product was shared, and he was very responsive. Good luck to him on his new assignment.
