January 2025 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Re: January 2025 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Key points:

- Citroen is DEAD.
- Amaze numbers don't look good, considering it's a new launch!
- Thar+Thar Roxx numbers are more or less same when compared to 3-door version.
- WagonR posts its highest sales (if i'm not wrong)
- Except Windsor, all MG Cars have witnessed a decline in sales.
- Tata Curvv sales also looks dull, considering it's pre-launch hype created by Tata!

Why so less numbers for Kodiaq and Tiguan? Are they stopped?

Re: January 2025 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Another month, another Maruti car at the top. Interestingly, every month it’s a different Maruti car. Last month, it was the Brezza, while earlier it was the Baleno, and so on. In the end, Maruti would be happy to retain the top spot.

Last month's topper, the Maruti Brezza, was thrown to the eleventh spot. Was the Brezza just lucky to reach the top last month?

Once a topper, the Maruti Alto was on the verge of moving out of the Top 20 list in November. However, now in comeback mode, it has reached the thirteenth spot in two months. The state of small cars continues to remain bleak, with only four A and B segment cars in the Top 20 list, all of which are from the Maruti family. Maruti continues to dominate the Top 10 count with six models in the list. Last month, they managed to capture all top four spots, but this month, the Hyundai Creta managed to sneak in.

Hyundai continues to have only the Creta in the Top 10, with one more, the Venue, in the Top 15 list. The picture continues to remain bleak for the manufacturer who held the number 2 position for so long.

The Tata Punch continued to remain at number 5. It looks like the Punch is still fighting to reclaim the top spot. Besides the Punch, the Tata Nexon dropped a few positions to number 8 this time around. Unfortunately, those are the only cars from Tata in the Top 20 list. Again, not an ideal situation for a manufacturer aiming for the number 2 position.

While Hyundai and Tata continue to have only two cars each in the Top 20 list, Mahindra continues to have five cars in the Top 20. The Scorpio gained one position to reach number 7. It looks like Mahindra is making a lot of efforts to make an impact in the Top 20 list, but in my opinion, they still have a long way to go to actually challenge the topper.

The newly launched Dzire dropped to the ninth position this month. It looks like the initial hype around it is losing its shine.

Sales for the Maruti S-Presso, Celerio, Ignis, and Baleno seem to be coming back to normal again. It looks like it was just the December (or end-of-year) effect.

There is a drastic drop in sales for the Maruti Jimny and MG Comet. It looks like they are losing their appeal.

Re: January 2025 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

- TATA Curvv does not seem to be anywhere near the success story that Nexon created

My opinion: Understandable to some extent, considering the practicality aspect (you get pretty much similar interior space and feature set as Nexon but at a higher price tag), and polarizing looks (Indian mass car market has not yet matured to SUV Coupe's styling yet).
The new Turbo TGDi engine is nothing great to write home about either

- Creta (number 3) and Grand Vitara (number 6) rule the C2 SUV segment and downfall of Elevate and Seltos continues

My opinion: Honda seriously needs to rejig the variant distribution in the Elevate (example, bring in Cruise control in the lower variants as well and not just keep it for top of the line variant). Also they need to attract more footfall to their showrooms, expand their service center network and have more innovative and exciting products so as to rekindle customer interest.
Kia is a mystery for me, the Seltos is eerily similar to the Creta, yet the sales are about 1/3rd of it. Perhaps, KIA itself is not aggressively positioning Seltos now, and focusing more on subcompact SUV segment (Syros, Sonet et al).

- The long forgotten Ignis and S-Presso seem to getting some breath of fresh air.

My opinion: Cars like Ignis deserve to sell more, as we are in the last leg of smooth and fun to drive 4 cylinder engined cars, and soon the 4 pot will be history as companies make way for 3 pot and hybrids + EVs as we leap into the future. If someone wants a pure mechanical feel of a great engine and gearbox combo, this is a good chance to pick up something like an Ignis MT and have some real fun.

- Maruti Jimney continues with low numbers

My opinion: Again, a very niche segment car. Not something you would love to drive everyday to work or even long rides. As a 4x4, very good. That's why, it has many buyers in the hills.

Re: January 2025 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

  • Altroz sales numbers are worrisome. Tata's step-motherly treatment is killing a wonderful product (barring that anaemic petrol engine).
  • Citroen and Jeep fighting for last place. Sad state of affairs for Stellantis group
  • Grand Vitara is now consistently holding 2nd spot in the midsize SUV segment. A refresh/ facelift with interior revamp can give the much needed competition to Creta.
  • Seltos' numbers have reduced drastically. I personally prefer Seltos over Creta. Are there any production constraints?
  • Carnival numbers reaffirm that Indian consumers are willing to pay premium pricing if they find value in the product.

It would appear to be so, as per this praiseworthy bit of investigative work by a fellow bhpian :

Re: January 2025 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

The Ciaz selling more than the City is a shame on Honda. Ciaz has been the same since 2019, where as the City was updated in 2023. Now I feel genuinely worried about Honda's future with these type of sales. New gen Amaze is selling just like the previous gen, showing that the new model has made no major impact on the audience.

Re: January 2025 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

  • Nice to see the VW twins are consistently selling good numbers in the C2 Sedan segment
  • Windsor is now the only seller in MG showrooms all other products are in decline
  • The response to the Creta EV and BE6 and
XEV 9E will determine the No.2 Manufacturer in the future, Tata is also there but they seem to have fallen back in recent months
  • Toyota and KIA seem to be doing well
  • Its only a question of when for the Stellantis group now, both companies are simply fighting for last place
