Re: January 2025 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

A point to note, the new Swift is beating Punch. WagonR is crushing it. It is mind boggling to witness two cars launched decades ago still calling the shots in Indian car market. Other manufacturers should take their lessons!

Maruti has mastered what others struggled to. They retained their old customers very well. My neighbour bought their first WagonR at the age of 40, and bought the new WagonR again as a middle aged person, once the old car developed suspension squeaks and other troubles I asked him why, and he said no other car can replace WagonR's low cost ownership (including mileage, he got CNG this time), and practicality. What a segment killer.

Looks like Honda's new gen Amaze made no impact, and even with this lukewarm response, they are raising the price by 10-15 k across the variants.

Agree, and every passing month reinforces my decision of opting for Verna Turbo DCT over the Honda City CVT. And this after having 3 honda city’s in the family, with one of them still running with us.

Verna turbo DCT has turned out to be a great choice; many people didn’t know the new Verna existed! With Hyundai, I feel there is no existential crisis despite the sedan segment shrinking overall.

The GFC of 2008 was a body blow to Honda. They even messed up in their core engine strength demonstrated by the oil dilution issues in the 1.5 L Turbo engine. This might be the reason they never launched the Turbo engine in India.

Honda has long lost its way in India. And now honda plus Nissan combination is going to be unleashed. Be careful

Re: January 2025 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I still don't understand how Thar is not clocking 15000. Is it because 3D Thar sales has been replaced with Roxx? Or that people who are in for a family SUV, they care lot more about mileage? Or that consumers are put off by waiting time as Mahindra is unable to scale production and is focusing on the least vfm Variant, MX5?

MX3 AT is easily the most vfm vehicle in the market under 20L. There is no reason for people to not line up for this.

Re: January 2025 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

A few takeaways

Stellantis: Stellantis India, once again proves that it's like the Toyota Hilux - they're indestructible, no matter how bad sales get.

Seriously though, it's crazy how they killed such competent products and brands with lots of potential. Jeep and Citroen are at the bottom of the charts - with really good products!

Honda Oh how the mighty fall. The City - their most famous model is at the bottom of the charts, and it's worrying how there is negligible improvement, even after a generation change. Confused why Honda thinks a price hike is necessary.

MG: The Windsor's sales has increased, unlike all the other MG cars.

Renault/Nissan: Both brands are in free-fall. What with Renault seemingly investing in dealers more than cars and Nissan having 2 models in their lineup (one of which didn't sell at all during Jan, I expect them to pack up and leave soon.

Tata: The Curvv and Altroz's sales are on a steady decline. The Curvv I understand - With its coupe shape it was a niche product to begin with. However, the Altroz is a truly great effort from Tata (apart from its engine) and it's sad how both the market and Tata themselves don't care for it.

Mahindra: Any reason why XEV 9e and BE 6 sales are reported as 1 figure?

Re: January 2025 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Kylaq’s entry seems to begin cannibalising Kushaq and Taigun both. However, it is good to see Skoda/VW combined doing better than Honda, MG, Renault-Nissan and other smaller brands. This would bring to them some confidence for trying out new products and or launching facelifts earlier than expected. This is critical as VW is already facing problems at home.

Re: January 2025 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Sad to see the Verna doing so poorly. Both the Virtus and Slavia, individually, are consistently outselling it, even though their numbers have remained roughly stagnant from this time last year.

Not surprised to see the City suffering, with the Elevate cannibalizing it on roughly equal footing and the competent and well-equipped higher end Amaze CVT variants on the lower price end. Honda's decision to equip it with an ancient powertrain might be coming back to bite it, considering how powerful and modern the rest of the C2 sedans are.

Re: January 2025 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Quite a mystery, the Toyota Rumion has less than a third sales that of the Maruti Ertiga, while the Innova HyCross hybrid has sold more than the Maruti Invicto has? Do we know the split of sales between HyCross hybrid and non-hybrid? We hardly see any Invictus on road? Perhaps due to perception of buyers?

Re: January 2025 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I dont know how many have noticed the pie chart of the category wise sales. The percentage of hatchbacks is slowly creeping up over the past 3 months (23% to 26%), while that of SUV's is marginally reducing. This to me seems the result of two issues:

1) Primarily the cost- SUVs are simply overpriced for what they offer. Sub 4m vehicles crossing 18L is almost unacceptable frankly.

2) Our cities are now overcrowded and parking space will be increasingly at a premium.

Wagon-R and Ignis's rebound sales may be a bit of an indicator.

Time and again, Fiat err, Stellantis shows why they are laggards; Absolutely no efforts from them to sell their products. They may be reliable cars but where are the sales folks? Nissan is selling more than them is a shame!

Coming to Renault - If your MPV is the largest selling model, please update it soon. I see no difference between a 2019 Triber v/s a 2025 Triber. It is what is paying the salaries!

I'm of the same opinion as you, MX3 AT is the vehicle to go for. However, this is not supported by my family as much, they prefer a car over a truck! But not so for Mahindra loyalists, they're liking 5d.

Also, it is true that there has been no additional sales coming to Mahindra via ROXX, almost no one buying 3d now, and, ROXX might be cannibalizing Scorpio+XUV 700 as well (these 3 are now on discounts). Introducing 5d Thar may now look like good option for customers but strategic mistake for Mahindra.

Not a surprise. The rebadged ones always sell less than the original one. Unlike the Glanza where it is more of private buyers and aspiring to have the 'T' badge, the Ertiga folks might be more practical and won't care if it is a 'S' or 'T' in the front grille and would rather go for Maruti aftersales support and spare parts availibility.

Regarding the Invicto/ Hycross, it is a no brainer. I would rather trust Toyota service centres with the hybrid system than Maruti. The same reason why Hyryder has more sales % vis-a-vis the Maruti version than other rebadged Toyotas. The only people who are going for the Invicto are those who don't care about brand image and want a faster delivery compared to Hycross long waiting period.

Yeah, thats right. We had seen videos on conversion of Invicto to Hycross by changing bumpers & logos. Don't have the link right now but its available on Youtube. So rather than waiting for long for T badge, people do opt for S badge and convert to T for their mental satisfaction.

Skoda commenced the delivery of Kylaq on January 27, 2025, and within five days, they managed to deliver an impressive 1,242 units, and I hope they can continue to meet their delivery targets.

It is sad to see Altroz doing so badly, being an owner of this nice car with diesel heart. I hope it does not die away like my previous car Figo.
