BYD Sealion 6 Plug-in Hybrid SUV spied in India

Last month, Chinese automaker BYD showcased its Sealion range of SUVs at the Auto Expo. The company plans to introduce the Sealion 6 PHEV and Sealion 7, which is a pure EV.

The Sealion 6 was recently spotted testing, which suggests that BYD is seriously considering the plug-in hybrid SUV for India. The test car appears to be the top-spec Premium variant equipped with all-wheel-drive.

The Sealion 6 PHEV looks slightly different than the pure electric Sealion 7. It has a bespoke front fascia with a larger grille and unique bumper. The rear is quite distinct too, with slim LED taillights connected by a light bar.

The Sealion 6 Premium AWD variant is powered by a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with two electric motors – one on each axle. The internal combustion engine delivers 129 BHP and 220 Nm, while the front and rear motors generate 201 BHP and 161 BHP of peak power, respectively. The maximum power output of the system is pegged at 319 BHP and 550 Nm.

The Sealion 6 uses a BYD Blade Battery which has a capacity of 18.3 kWh. This gives the car an electric range of 81 km, while the overall range is said to be 961 km.

Somebody please explain that if the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine produces 129 BHP, while the front and rear motors generate 201 BHP and 161 BHP of peak power, respectively, total being 491 BHP, then why is the maximum power output of the system is pegged at 319 BHP?

Is it just to maximise the range?

Doesn’t make much sense. It’s a CBU and Hybrids doesn’t have any tax benefits like electric vehicles. 28% vs 5 % GST & (15 - 21 % ) vs (0-5% ) road tax in different states.

BYD should have brought the Leopard 5/8 instead. Even though it’s CBU and hybrid it’s all together a different segment vehicle.

The 1.5 Liter petrol with electric powertrains seems luscious, too good. I hope they bring the Leopard 8 in India. The Sealion will offer no product differentiation I feel, which won't be the case for Leopard variants.

I hope Tata & Mahindra take a leaf from same & PHEV of their Petrol SUVs. I own Safari & its platform seems to have ample space for such modification/ adaption.

Now here is a car I would love to own... the only worry is GOI inconsistent policies about Chinese companies. PHEVs are the perfect solution, EV for city and commute and ICE for the highway drives.

Today majority of the EVs are second or third cars in the family. PHEVs can offer a solution where you can heave one car garage and not have the usual limitations of EVs when you want to travel long distance. City drives can always be on EV mode. However these are usually complex, costly and not many options in India, Not sure if any of our Indian manufacturers are even considering this. I would love to have this as my one car option but from a Indian Manufacturer so that Service support and parts availability are assured.

The good thing is that if this becomes popular, other manufacturers like Skoda, Toyota, Mercedes etc will also follow suit and we can pick and choose whatever we want.

Similar to literally everyone offering ADAS after Mahindra made it mainstream.

Re: BYD Sealion 6 Plug-in Hybrid SUV spied in India

Will be dead on arrival.

BYD has been importing their cars and for PHEVs 100%+ import duty, 50% GST + cess and 18% road tax in states like KA, even price of 40L will be a herculean task.

I know the popular sentiment is PHEV is best of both worlds, but in my opinion it's the worst of both primarily because you are lugging around two power trains.

1. You neither get the quick acceleration of EV nor the top speeds of ICE.
2. You are maintaining two power trains, so you are spending more money.

IMO, it's better to buy a pure ICE or pure EV. These hybrids are just a compromise in every way.

In the case of hybrids and PHEVs, you cannot directly add the HP from the ICE engine and the motor, as the hybrid system will not allow the full power output at the same when the engine is running at its peak. So when the ICE engine may be generating 129 BHP at say 6000 rpm, the electric motors are not delivering 201+169 hp. They will be delivering the peak power at a very different point in the speed range. This is why the HP numbers cannot be ditectly added.
