Since its launch in 2010, the carmaker has sold over 1.2 million units of the Eeco. It currently has a market share of 90% in its segment, with CNG variants accounting for approximately 43% of its overall sales.

According to Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer, Marking and Sales at Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., the Eeco is not only popular in urban markets but also in rural areas of India, which contribute 63% of its overall sales.

The Maruti Eeco is available in 13 different variants, including 5-seater, 7-seater, Cargo, Tour and Ambulance configurations. It is powered by a 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine and comes equipped with various safety features such as driver side airbag, ABS with EBD, reverse parking sensors, seat belt reminders, and a high-speed alert system.

It's impressive how this van went from a weird flopped idea (Versa) to a practical, no-nonsense utility van that weathered it all and still garners strong sales despite age, safety concerns, rules and regulations, etc. Is a large reason for its success the fact that it has no real competitiors? Yes, absolutely. Still, kudos to the Eeco!

I remember Amitabh Bachchan was the brand Ambassador of the Maruti Suzuki Versa. At that time the car was a bit ahead of its time, projecting itself as a premium MUV targeted at the rising middle class joint families.

The sales never took off and Maruti did some clever cost cuttings, including some design changes and opening the sale for commercial segment, before the car became succesful.

An old TVC millennials might recall:

People in the know indicate the Eeco in a new guise with an interior upgrade will arrive next FY. So, it seems Suzuki has not given up on this vehicle and would be upgrading the vehicle as required.

Hope now they add AC to the 7 seater versions of the Eeco and the cargo versions. It's a really very cheap way of cost cutting where you pay more to get less.

The Maruti Eeco's petrol variants outsell the CNG variant by 57 percent to 43 percent of overall sales. Surprisingly petrol outsells CNG considering its a commercial vehicle.

That was perhaps the first and last time the Big B boarded a Versa unless he has driven or has been driven in it for a film role.

Yes, the Eeco is now a nearly 95 to 100 % commercial vehicle, rather much more a CV unlike the Van/Omni that was owned as a personal vehicle by some folks. In fact, during its 15 year journey, the Eeco has gradually replaced the Omni as its very apt successor doing all the Omni duties plus more, owing to its larger engine and dimensions.

They really need to start offering power steering for the Eeco. Interior upgrade? Hope they make the dashboard and centre console area more practical, and not slap on a touchscreen and call it a day.

95-100% commercial vehicle? Maybe in metro cities. In suburban and rural areas, many families use the Eeco as a family vehicle. Ofcourse not as much as how the Omni was used for private use in the 80s and 90s, but a good number of private users buy the Eeco.

While having a conversation with a taxi driver in his Eeco, he mentioned buying a petrol 5 seater variant, and modified it to 7 seater CNG variant. The reason being CNG variant was around 1 Lakh more and 7 seater/Tour variant had no AC.

CNG conversion costs around 50-60k, based on 2 quotes he got. He went with the former for CNG. This also might be a reason for more % of petrol vehicles sold.
