The VW Golf-GTI if launched in India will get positioned as a niche within a niche segment. Of course, this will not be popular as a mainstream vehicle within the India automobile market.

However, let’s not forget this would be an enthusiasts’ ride (as a pedigree hot hatch in the market even at a premium, as a CBU import), and likely to find home in multi car garages with far more expensive/premium performance cars.

Besides, there’s the family of MINI cars which have their own fans and rising prices did not impact its niche market substantially. Volvo C40 range would be another such example (although they lost the market a bit owing to dated looks/products for India).

Well, if it's just about the size, price and engines, then why are some SUVs (having the size of Kodiaq, Tiguan, Fortuner etc.) brought in as CBUs or CKDs? Wouldn't manufacturing them here lower the prices and thus result in more sales?

Honestly, as a third car for the garage, my heart says to go for the GTI. However, the on-road price crossing the half-crore mark makes it a very bad financial decision. Considering that the Mahindra BE 6 would undercut it while offering similar power and features, the only notable difference might be in the handling department. Plus, it would cost just about half the price of the GTI.

This would now be an interesting comparison between similar powered ice car vs the electrics.

Because the scale would just not make sense for the investment required to make these models locally plus there are challenges with getting localisation increase with quality for high end parts.

Hii all,

I am seeing many posts by many esteemed members regarding why Volkswagen is not launching the Golf R instead of the Golf GTI. Here are some reasons for the same.

1) The 265hp tune of the 2.0l TSI used by the Golf GTI is already in use in the Audi Q5. Thus, it does not require any new logistics or inventory management which would be required for the Golf R, as many components of its engine are different.

2) Further, the Golf R strictly requires 98-octane fuel for its high compression engine, which is not readily available in India. If they launch a vehicle with such requirements, it can lead to future warranty claims as people might put in 95 or 91 octane based on availability, or they might outrightly not purchase a vehicle with such a requirement. Whereas the Golf GTI can easily run on 95 octane.

3) Further, the complex All-Wheel Drive system in the Golf R would require additional training and capacity building of the ASS.

4) Last, is the cost of R which is way higher than the GTI.

These are the most probable reasons why they chose to bring GTI and not the R IMHO.

And add to that a much harder ride on 18 inch wheels which would be a pain in the wrong places on our roads; the GTI wont be comfortable either but at least will be manageable.

This is a great decision by VW, as the Polo itself is very popular among enthusiasts. The GTI would be no exception, even though import duties would put the car in the 40 lakh price bracket. However, even at that price, there is no doubt that all 2500 cars imported to India will be sold quickly.

The India-bound Golf GTI is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine (EA888) that produces 265hp and 370Nm. The engine is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox that sends power to the front wheels. Volkswagen claims a 0-100kph time of 5.9 seconds for the Golf GTI, and it has an electronically limited top speed of 250kph.

Other mechanical highlights include a progressive steering (featuring variable steering rack and pinion gearing), an electronically controlled front-axle differential lock, and an optional adaptive suspension.

Is it really coming with VW suing GOI and all that? Would be one hot car if it comes though!! This time, the prices maybe more palatable given that a top end syros from hyundai is priced ar 24lakh OTR

Volkswagen Golf GTI pre-bookings to open this month

Volkswagen is set to launch the Golf GTI in India this year. The hot hatchback will be imported via the CBU route, and as per the latest update from dealer sources, pre-bookings are likely to open this month.



The Golf GTI is a performance version of the standard Golf. The latest generation features a slim front fascia with slim LED headlamps, C-shaped LED taillights, a roof spoiler, dual exhausts, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The sporty hatchback gets an all-black interior with a 12.9-inch touchscreen in the centre, a 3-spoke steering wheel, and a digital instrument cluster.

The Golf GTI is powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine that makes 261 BHP and 370 Nm and is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Is there any clarity on which generation / facelift / prefacelift model of the GTI that is being made available in India?

Although we did get the facelift version of the Polo GTI, we received the 3-door variants that were in the process of being phased out in the RHD markets. Essentially, we got dumped with some of the old stuff of surplus stock.

The fear is that VW may attempt the same thing with the Golf GTI, and we would get the pre-updated models of the GTI and not the absolute very latest version of it that benefits from some crucial updates.

If the 261bhp power figure is to go by, then it is definitely the facelift GTI. The pre updated car got the 245bhp variant of the Gen 3 EA888. The new car gets the Gen 4.
