Cars costing less than 40000 USD have 70 % duty and 43 % GST is not applicable. Considering the recently launched Superb ex showroom of 54 which possibly costs around 10% higher than a golf gti; the golf gti could be priced 49 ex showroom taking it close to a little over 60 on road in India.

I am waiting for the day our automobile market matures enough to identify a Golf GTI for what it is, without simplistic comparisons with any large vehicle which can be bought for the same money. I will happily bid farewell to my tryst with ICE cars with a GTI owned and driven in India.

The only fly in the ointment could be a low slung car on our exceptionally well planned and maintained roads. The ground clearance of ~120-130mm would be a problem. Other than that this is THE mainstream, affordable (debatable of course) car to drool over. If people still compares this to jacked up hatches/pseudo-SUVs or 'bigger' cars, then we don't appreciate what The Golf stands for.

Now how far would we go for this. I reckon, enthusiasts with somewhat deep pockets are the target customers here, and VW would try to fleece us, at least the early batch, as usual. So we would expect ex-showroom to nudge on 50 lakhs. And that there is the bog VW should avoid. This is a 4.3m car with an exceptionally good engine and drivability. Be sensible, launch it at 39.99 and it will do well. At least it will help VW patch-up the brand image.

I'd say anyone should take that news with a liberal pinch of salt. I don't buy it at all. In fact, I'll eat my non-existent hat if it launches at 40L ex-showroom.

Someone on this thread extrapolated the prices based on global prices and our tax regime and arrived at 49L ex-showroom. That sounds about right. Even a 45L ex-showroom price seems optimistic.

Remember, this is the company that brought in the Polo GTI at about 25L ex-showroom before slashing it drastically. And that wasn't even in this hyper-inflated market. 40L is wildly optimistic, IMO.

Love this... Have put my plans of Virtus on hold for now.

A golf GTI has been a dream for a decade and half now, VW don't price it out of the the world and then give insane year end discounts.

I am a little concerned they may get the MK8 though instead of the latest MK8.5 model, although 240 horses in nothing to scoff at.

Price this at 40 VW and I will buy it week 1 in white.

There is nothing comparable to this unless Skoda also gets the Octavia vRS.

BMW is killing its own line with the Ld and Li except for the 340i which remains undiluted thankfully.

If this has any chance of 50% success meaning VW can sell 1250 of 2500, it has to be priced below 40 Lakh ex-showroom in the full spec version. Other then few hundred fanboy, no one else is going to pay more

It will almost certainly be available with steep discounts one month after launch. Some great potential deals to be had, if you like the car.

Because there is no market for large hatches in India, let alone a powerful one. The economies of scale won't make sense. Hypothetically let's assume they make a production in India, that would be at least 25 to 30 lakh ex showroom for the GTI. How many of us would pay 35 lakhs for a 4.3m hatch today? So it is better as a halo product.

If VW brought this 10-12 years back, it would have been a different story, though.

It's a lot longer than 4m in length. It'll be subjected to heavy taxes and not many would buy a hatchback at that kind of prices.

Even cars under four metre need to have an engine smaller than 1200cc (petrol) or 1500cc (diesel) to fall under the lower taxation bracket. The taxation has changed appreciably over the last decade but there has always been significant benefits for a manufacturer for ensuring that their cars fell under the bracket. Under the current GST regime, petrol cars falling under the bracket are taxed at 29 per cent and diesel cars in the bracket at 31 per cent. Anything that doesn't fit in is taxed at a minimum of 43 per cent.
