I've read that it is replacing the 6 speed Aisin AT and the 1.5 variants will continue with DSG.

This is a bit confusing. A large number of the Euro cars currently use the DQ200 (even one of the Octavia models in the current gen) and a good bit of marketing for VW/Skoda is around the use of the 7 speed DSG. Why would they want to replace a relatively trouble free (DQ200 hasn't had a lot of issues in recent years) in house gearbox with something from a vendor?

It's not like they are trying to put a ZF 8 speed in a 20 lakh car (which most of us would've loved)

If the 8-speed AT is going to find its way into the Kylaq, I suspect that it will replace the ageing 6-speed TC AT.

My suspicion is that the Kushaq and Kylaq will get some form of mild-hybridization for their respective mid-cycle refresh facelift models, and its these models that will receive the updated 8-speed TC AT.

Is the DQ200 manufactured here or imported? If it's imported, then Aisin makes sense as a locally sourced gearbox. Since Aisin is used by more manufacturers, they also get volume for local production.

Aisin started production in India?

Thought that India never made any automatic transmissions (torque converter type) and everything had been imported till now. Though the Aisin TC gearbox is apt for local assembly consdiering how it is being used widely across brands.

The 8 speed AT is not yet made locally.

Skoda, which leads the development of the India 2.0 cars, is now looking to localise the upcoming 8-speed torque converter unit (AQ300) that’s replacing the 6-speed unit globally. However, the volumes are still too low to make this project viable.

Skoda-VW hopes that other automakers like Maruti-Suzuki and MG Motor India, which currently also use the AQ250 gearbox, will all upgrade to the AQ300 unit to make a business case for local production of the new 8-speed unit.
Petr Janeba, brand director, Skoda India, in a recent interaction with Autocar India, said, “Once we find the scale with the next-generation gearbox, we are inviting everybody (other automakers) to join the party to get it done here in India for the Indian customer.”

No. VW/Skoda planning to make local production of new 8 speed feasible with the support of other manufacturers who also currently use the imported Aisin 6 speed.
