The downfall of Seltos and Honda Elevate has been startling. The Seltos more so because it was always a preference of young families and millennials alike, till few years ago. .
There might be a few reasons for this:
- the Seltos is the oldest car in its segment. The new Creta, Maruti-Toyota twins, VAG twins, Astor, C3 Aircross, Elevate and Curvv all came after it. However, it doesn't mean that the car is outdated. For me, it's still the best looking car of the lot.
- Kia doesn't have much of a rural India or even tier-2 & 3 cities when compared to the segment top-sellers, Hyundai & Maruti, both of which are deeply entrenched throughout the country with more showrooms than Kia.
- Kia's production capacity isn't a constraint. It can do about 350,000 units a year. They aren't exporting in huge numbers currently. The previous year FY24 full exports were only 52,000 and domestic sales were 245,000 units.
- The problem IMHO with Kia's refusal to provide deep discounts on the Seltos. Even the Grand Vitara gets advertised discounts upto Rs 1.30 lakhs which help it achieve the excellent numbers. The Creta at this point is a household name, sells on it to quite an extent and it's facelift was a more thorough revision than the Seltos.
- Kia doesn't provide the 1.5 NA engine with CVT in the higher specs, which Hyundai does happily and sells a huge number of. Have to realise that this engine is the highest seller among the three options.

Re: October 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Do the Tigor sales also include the Xpress? If yes then it's quite dismal. I wonder why they don't push the Tigor CNG into the Taxi segment? It desperately needs an upgrade. Ideally, it should move to the Altroz platform.

Mahindra sold 10000 XUV 700s!
Unthinkable and how remarkable that a car with an average price of 20-22 lakhs is clocking such numbers!

1 Tigor CNG can easily eat into Dzire cab share.

2 If Tigor Commercial EVs are already included in the monthly figure of 1K then petrol Tigor is barely selling! Fleet segment is a better option.

Re: October 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Few observations
1. Once Thar Roxx deliveries start at full scale, there is a hope that Mahindra can claim 2nd position.
2. Mahindra should seriously consider reviving Marazzo with better engine and gearbox. We are looking at 40,000 cars per month MPV market.
3. Fortuner numbers always surprise me.
4. Harrier/Safari twins need a powerful petrol engine. They are losing the market in and around delhi.
5. Tata should revive Tigor, otherwise new dzire will kill it even further. Same for Hyundai xcent.
6. Looks like discounts on Superb is helping, finally we could see double digit. I wish Skoda learn a bit from this pricing.
7. Come on Citroen and Jeep, please dont die.
8. Maruti is going to claim another 1-2% market share easily with new dzire
9. Hyundai is selling Cretas at the same level as Maruti selling Swifts, impressive.
10. MG sold 3000 Windsors in the opening month. Looks like they've a winner here.
11. Honda numbers are worrying.

Re: October 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

With Maruti now coming with all guns blazing with new Dzire, it will recoup the lost market share until and unless competition is ready to take them head on which I don’t see happening in near future.
With advent of Windsor, true affordable EV’s will find more favour than pseudo EVs which will loose market share or sell on discount. MG is only manufacturer now which has more EVs selling then ICE.

Very exciting times ahead for us enthusiasts and consumers

Interesting to see the number of a big state like TN. Any particular reason why it is in red across all areas?

I guess it's due to rains. People in Chennai had to park their cars on the flyovers as red alert was issued in the city. Car ownership in most of the urban areas of Tamil Nadu becomes a headache during monsoon as almost every street in urban areas are prone to floods.

Re: October 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

It's comforting to see Jimny's sales figures are up this October. But it is noteworthy that those sales figures cross 1k mark only when the company announces discounts. July and October saw exponential growth only because of discounts worth 2-3 lakhs. Otherwise, those numbers will remain within 500 every month it seems. What an epic pricing blunder by Maruti. Had they sealed the maximum price at 14 lakhs; sales would have been three times the present numbers.

Re: October 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Great month for Auto Industry. Numbers for Mahindra Scorpio are just amazing, always wonder how they able to sell those many cars in a month. Old Scorpio is still selling good numbers I guess. People who says India is a poor country, just see Fortuner numbers. Toyota trust and lack of proper competition work wonders for them for years. Fronx numbers are just mind blowing. When it was launched, I was sure that this was a bad move and it will not sell much. But I was totally wrong and its sales numbers prove me wrong every month.

More than 15 K cars sold by Toyota are Maruti. If we consider that, Maruti is doing healthy 44% of total sales overall which is just great. Ignis is doing better numbers than last year, its always a better buy than Wagon R, Celerio, etc. Great month for Mahindra and I am sure they will be number 2 soon, may be from next month only. Hyundai need to worry a lot, only Creta and Venue are bringing bulk volumes, rest all are not doing so great. With Dzire scoring 5 stars in GNCAP, more reasons to worry for them. Tata also need some changes to their lineup. Tiago, Tigor are old now, need new models.

Big reason to worry for Honda, Renault, Nissan, Jeep, Citroen. They are just not moving at all, we need these brands in India to have variety and competition for customers. German duo doing good with 2.0 products. Kylac is going to be big thing for Skoda next year.

Re: October 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Funny how Nissan does similar numbers as Renault. Renault has 3 cars and Nissan has one. Renault has somewhat better brand image, whereas Nissan stands for nothing honestly. Both brands belong to the same group.

Crazy what Rakesh Srivastava has done to Nissan.

Re: October 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Looking at the retail sales data adds a new perspective to the fight for number 2. Tata is selling more vehicles than Mahindra but dispatching less vehicles. Sales are just a little below what Hyundai is doing but on basis of dispatch, Tata is down to 4th spot now.
Nevertheless, it is an interesting battle and Mahindra should move ahead if the dealers stop creating fake booking to make it look like the cars are in higher demand than they really are.
The long waiting periods are putting off a lot of perspective buyers( me being one of them). And on top of that the dealerships are charging extra to get the car delivered earlier which is a really shady practice going on for a long time. Mahindra should have cracked down on it by now.

Mahindra cars are more mechanically sorted than Tatas and have higher aspirational value than the Hyundais.
The only thing they need to sort out is the dealership and service experience. On the dealership experience, even Tata is ahead of them( based on my recent personal experience)and that needs to be sorted.

At the end of the day, it will be interesting to see how this fight pans out.

Re: October 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Every month I see these sales figures and wonder what Mahindra has done with the Thar is nothing short of amazing! Who would have thought a two door off-roader could do consistent 5k and now even 8k per month. Yes. they have made it more of an all rounder and more palatable for the masses, specially with the 4-door. But still the way they have cashed in on brand Thar is a case study! Also goes on to prove that there is a great appetite in the market for enthusiast oriented cars if the OEM gets the formula right.
