Which cars have had two-generations being sold concurrently in India?

Good day moderators, this is my first thread. Was just coming across the facelifts thread, I had a thought of cars which were sold with their next-generation models. Just researched about it, found a few mentions.

Honda City 4th and 5th Gen (thank you saket77 for the picture for the 5th gen city)

Honda's midsize sedan Honda City's 4th generation and 5th generation were sold together from 2020-2022

ScorpioN and Scorpio Classic

The new Big Daddy and the Grandpa are sold together. However, they are aimed at different sets of people with the former for large families and the latter, politicians.

Grand i10 and Grand i10 nios

They were sold together with the Grand i10 nios commanding a 50000 rupees of starting price over the Grand i10.

Similar case with i10 and Grand i10 when the latter was launched

If you get to know of more examples, please contribute to this thread.

re: Which cars have had two-generations being sold concurrently in India?

Very few manufacturers can pull it off. Some did successfully, others didn't.

- The Innova Hycross & the Innova Crysta: Sure helps that the Hycross & Crysta are completely different animals (FWD vs RWD, monocoque vs BoF, Petrol vs Diesel).

- The 2nd & 3rd-gen Dzires, the former being positioned for the taxi market with the tour moniker.

- The Octavia was sold alongside its next-gen replacement, the Laura.

- Maruti 800 & Alto. The latter was actually its replacement worldwide.

- Fiesta Classic & the 2011 Fiesta which was priced too high & bombed.

- Tata Indica & Indica Vista.

I wonder if there are other countries where this phenomenon happens. Generally they will discontinue the older model instead of producing both side by side and giving the new one a different name.

If I am not mistaken, Fiat relaunched the old Grande Punto as Punto Pure while still selling the likes of Punto Evo, Avventura etc. They got a lot of flack for it and rightly so!

For this list, I am going to go international and model wise, instead of the Indian market specific brand name.

1. Sold as Alto around the world in one form or the other - Maruti 800 (Suzuki Fronte) - Maruti Zen (Suzuki Cervo) - Maruti Alto (Suzuki Alto) - Maruti A-star (Suzuki Alto/Celerio)

2. Maruti Esteem - Maruti Swift. Maruti Esteem - Maruti Baleno. The Esteem was a Suzuki Swift with a boot. Our Maruti Baleno (sedan) was also called as Esteem in some markets.

3. Hyundai Accent - Hyundai Verna. The Verna is still called as Hyundai Accent around the world.

4. Tata Sumo- Tata Sumo Grande/Movus/Mark something(?)

5. Chevrolet Spark - Beat

6. I am not sure, but was the Optra Magnum and Cruze sold side by side for a few years?

Almost forgot this one happened.

Happens everywhere. Though in most markets it happens only when the old generation was sold for too long and the next generation is a quantum leap or have gone upmarket suddenly and the manufacturer doesn't want to leave any gaps in the market. The 70 series Landcruiser introduced in the 1980s is still being sold with updates everywhere except for North America, Europe and India. In India, mostly manufacturers are being greedy and want to mop up all volumes, ending up harming the brand. IMHO, the Indica brand was killed due to TATA continuing the 1st gen Indica alongwith the Indica Vista, instead of selling the Indica Vista as the 2nd gen Indica.

Re: Which cars have had two-generations being sold concurrently in India?

Ford India did it for the longest time when they had the Ikon, the Fiesta Classic and the global Ford Fiesta selling side-by-side.

Then we had the Hyundai Xcent Prime (fleet) selling alongside the Xcent Facelift. Later the Xcent Facelift moved to fleet applications and the Aura was launched.

Similarly, we had the Grand i10 Prime (fleet) selling alongside the Grand i10 facelift. Later we had the Grand i10 facelift selling alongside the Grand i10 NIOS.

And now we will famously see the Maruti Swift Dzire current gen as the Tour S (fleet) and the new 2024 Dzire being sold together.

Re: Which cars have had two-generations being sold concurrently in India?

As DicKy rightly mentioned, the decision to sell old version alongside new one greatly depends on positioning of new model plus how similar the tooling is for the manufacturer to assemble both models on same line without much cost.

I feel the this trend has stopped now or will stop soon (I am unaware if Hyundai still follows this). Maruti for example, for many years sold the previous gen dZire as tour model. However, post COVID they dropped that strategy. Now it's the same gen dZire that's sold to car fleet operators ( offcourse with the bare interiors and top speed limitation). Honda too realised the same and discontinued the 4'th gen city even though people were still buying it as it seemed lot more VFM and to some the better looker compared to 5'th gen.

Re: Which cars have had two-generations being sold concurrently in India?

-The Safari Dicor and the Storme were sold together for quite a while AFAIK.

- The Crysta is still Sold alongside The Hycross (?)

- I think the 3rd gen WagonR and the Stingray were sold together for their entire lifetime after the Stingray was launched.

Bolero and Bolero Neo ? I know both are totally different vehicles inside out but both carry same name ‘Bolero’.

Re: Which cars have had two-generations being sold concurrently in India?

Here are a few which come to my mind.

FIAT
Punto had two generations sold side by side. Guess one was the Punto Evo and other was a pre facelift variant sold as Punto Pure.

Nissan
The micra surely had two different versions being sold side by side, don't know if it can be called as generation change or mere facelifts but then the New Micra was sold along the Micra Active (being relatively cheaper too).

Mahindra
Bolero - Bolero Neo.
Scorpio - ScorpioN.
Pre facelift Thar, if I recall right the Thar was sold in 2 different variants, DI and CRDe, they had different interiors too. Both of these vehicles had completely different character and drove accordingly. Although to a common non enthusiast, from the outside they were almost identical.

Tata
Indigo - Indigo Manza.
Sumo - Grande
Safari - Storme

Ford
Classic - Fiesta

Isuzu
I am a bit confused here please correct me if I am wrong, but we're not the MU7 and MUX, sold side by side for a few years? I don't remember if it was the SUV or the Pickup variants but surely I recall seeing both the different generations being listed on their website some years ago.

Force
Traveller - Urbania

Re: Which cars have had two-generations being sold concurrently in India?

Tata Indigo CS (along with Subsequent eCS) and Indigo Manza were on sale at the same time. Both vehicle, although carrying same monikar, had different clientele. I remember seeing many government officials having Manza as their offical vehicle with Amber bacon on it (until government removed it) whereas Cabbies used to prefer Indigo CS which was incidentally one of the fleet cars of my first employer. I really liked the space at the back along with cushioning ride (both were superior than Dzire of that time).Which cars have had two-generations being sold concurrently in India?-dsc_0964-copy.jpg

Re: Which cars have had two-generations being sold concurrently in India?

Let's not forget the OG kidnapper car of Indian cinema for decades.

The Omni(1984-2019)was sold side by side with its replacement the Eeco(2010 to present) for a decade almost until emission norms and safety regulations made Suzuki pull the plug on the former and prioritize the latter.

Mercifully for Maruti Suzuki, not a lot of movies have used the Eeco for kidnapping scenes. As a result, the Eeco is seen more like a commercial vehicle than a private one and is mostly used by hospitals for ambulance, cops for patrolling and other small businesses like laundry, home car wash, food carts etc thanks to its spacious interior which I think in some ways hurt the Eecos image as a people mover. Nobody recalls the name Eeco as fondly as we did an Omni.

Edit: looks like people did use an Eeco for kidnapping in real life. Omni's fruit Eeco didn't fall much farther from the tree then.

Finally Eeco after so many years of hard work has started to continue Lord Omni's legacy.
