Volkswagen to roll out Taigun & Virtus facelifts by 2026

According to a media report, Volkswagen is likely to introduce the facelift versions of the Taigun and Virtus by late 2025 or early 2026.

As part of the update, both the Taigun and Virtus are expected to receive cosmetic changes on the outside. Both cars could adopt designs inspired by VW's latest global models.

In order to make the products more competitive in their respective segments, VW is also likely to introduce new features like ADAS.

The facelift versions of the Taigun and Virtus are unlikely to receive any mechanical updates. Both cars will retain the same set of engines, which include 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre turbo-petrol units that are set to be compliant with emission norms until 2027.

It has also been reported that Volkswagen is planning to launch a Skoda Kylaq-based compact SUV in 2026.

With the limited changes, it feels more of a ‘yearly refresh’ rather than a ‘facelift’, does not matter whether VW calls it a ‘facelift’ or ‘new-gen’

VW has the driving dynamics sorted. They need to equip their vehicles to be on par with or better than the competition and improve their ASS. They already offer 5-star safety and excellent driving pleasure. We have seen the Virtus overtake the Verna despite having fewer features. If they equip their cars well, the Virtus will maintain the lead, and the Taigun could make significant strides in the category.

This was confirmed by Ashish Gupta, facelift next year with ADAS and most probably a larger sunroof.

I'm not sure how much these cars will be able to sustain the momentum of the present. 2026 will be a very different time, with BS7, CAFE3, and hybrid/EV probably having between 7% and 10% market share.

VW/Skoda should have done something substantial this year to allay any fears about their commitment to the market.

I might be completely wrong but I have a feeling that all these sudden announcements on facelifts and new models make me think that they are just one step closer to exit. I feel they are being in the news with all these future promises just to ensure someone takes over. We have seen this before as well with other OEMs, be it GM or Ford.

I really don't see why you'd think that. They're segment leaders in sedans, although it's a low volume segment.

I think the Kylaq could be a gamechanger for them, especially in such a high volume segment. Except for the 3XO, there's no other real competition for the Kylaq in terms of driving dynamics. The other cars in the segment are meant to be practical, and this could be the Kylaq's USP.

I think the Taigun could use a new generation rather than a facelift, however, with increased dimensions and top features, to make it compete better with the Creta.

However, they will never truly compete with Hyundai in terms of service and repairs costs.

On top of all this they're looking for an Indian partner, and that investment could keep them around for longer.

Re: Volkswagen to roll out Taigun & Virtus facelifts by 2026

What should Volkswagen do here in India?

This is my wish list. I am no one to advise them.
  • Show themselves as enthusiasts’ car:
The Virtus is one of the very few cars that can be modified as a muscle car. This sedan has one of the best engines and gearbox combo and a steering with precise feedback and excellent driving dynamics.

Why can’t they have a proper exhaust note (street legal) that sounds deep, low and rumble, to their cars?
This will elevate the driving experience and even a novice will experience the pure sensory pleasure of driving a car in a sea of mute EVs and mediocre ICE vehicles.

A test drive on such a car should double the sale of VW.

I feel pity for Volkswagen when Suzuki advertises the Fronx as a performance machine after throwing turbo and paddle shifters in its 3-pot engine.
  • Have the basics right:
Proper LED headlights, good horns, disc brakes on rear wheels, rear / 360-degree cameras, better suspensions, ventilated seats (it's not luxury anymore) etc. The options and quality of these components must be at par with other manufacturers.

ADAS, panoramic sunroof etc can be given as options.
  • Give options to modify:
Thar would not have become this successful if they had denied warranty on modification. One of the reasons that even an impractical Thar became hugely successful is because of the vast modification and customization options that it provides for its customers.

VW know that they have good products but their reluctance to allow customers to modify their VW cars has restricted them to limited sales. As soon as you speak about a modification to a VW salesperson, his response will be “It can void the warranty”. Hell, they even deter unplugging their basic hidden features through VCDS.

At least do not discourage the customer from modifying their cars if it's not impacting the engine, gearbox and other critical components.
  • Accessories:
Rather than giving useless things at outrageous prices, give sensible accessories and upgrade options to customers (Tyres, alloys, headlights, seats etc). This way VW do not have to bear the cost and customers will get their car modified as per their taste. This point can be clubbed with the above point on modification.
  • Better service costs and experiences.
It’s self-explanatory.

VW can become a Royal Enfield of cars in India. Producing reasonably priced cars which can give the unadulterated joy of driving.

Another perspective - In a way it is good for current prospective customers. Until 2026, no new updates, so it is safe to buy now.

6 months back, I was in the market for a compact suv and I was just not getting any information on XUV 300 facelift (now 3XO). Loved 300 but hated the interiors.

And why is this a news in 2024 ? I mean who shares a product launch news almost 2 years in advance!
Ford Ecosport facelift vibes anyone?

But Kylaq launch gives hope.

Re: Volkswagen to roll out Taigun & Virtus facelifts by 2026

In upcoming facelifts coming in 2026, expect the 8 speed AQ300 torque converter automatic gearbox in their 1.0L variants replacing the existing AQ250 6-speed automatic transmission.
However, the 1.5L will continue with the DSG transmission.

Skoda Kylaq too is likely to get the AQ300 in 2026.
