The rumours that the Tera was going to be VW’s Kylaq were based solely off a Motor1 Brasil report about the prototype being presented to dealers who said it “looked like a Skoda from Europe” and indeed it does look like a Fabia, but in a very different way from the Kylaq. I think it is pretty clear by now that the car coming to India will not be a derivative of Tera.

Volkswagen Tera in some interesting spy photos while winter testing in North Europe.

The prototype hardly has camouflage, for example, in its thin headlights and in a radiator grille that clearly shows the chrome finish of both its thin horizontal slats and vertical struts. The bumper also features a black foil, but it cannot hide the large air intakes at the ends or the grille in the central part that features a design inspired by that of the new T-Roc.

Can see in these spy photos that on the top of the headlights there is a thin and split light cord for both the daytime running lights and the direction indicators, while at the rear you can see modern lights with a light bar that will join them.

Re: Volkswagen readying Kylaq-based Compact SUV for 2026

From the spy shots it is clear that actually this car should have been called "Polo Cross"!

Is this coming to India? If so, when?

Would give India s skip as in condition. A derivative of this could be possible. Even for that, we have to see the upcoming verdict on the tax evasion case coming shortly.

On a side note, I am almost positive that Latin NCAP will release the Tera's crash test results during (or very shortly after) its launch next month.

Re: Volkswagen readying Kylaq-based Compact SUV for 2026

This is beautiful!

Looks like a very exciting launch to me, quite similar to the VW Tayron which they unveiled, it will definitely outsell other cars sharing the same segment which include, Venue, Sonet and Brezza only if they advertise it well just like the Taigun and give it some feel good features like ADAS, Ambient lighting, to satisfy the Indian customers' mindset.
Most important aspect is it's pricing, I feel like the Kylaq is a little overpriced for it's top variant, this new VW compact SUV would also be similarly priced. Hope they give a very competitive pricing for the top variant

Press Release

Countdown: Tera will be revealed at the Rio de Janeiro Carnival

The appearance of the newest member of the Volkswagen do Brasil SUV line will take place on March 2, at the Marqués de Sapucaí, during the Parade of the Samba Schools of Rio de Janeiro;

In new images, Tera appears at unprecedented angles, revealing the identity of full headlights and lanterns, as well as other design spoilers;

The 100% model designed, developed and produced in Brazil is technological, beautiful, modern and will inaugurate an unprecedented segment for Volks in the country;

Novo Tera is the fourth vehicle in the German brand's 16-new product offensive by 2028.

The largest party on the planet will serve as the stage for the unveiling of Volkswagen do Brasil's most important launch in recent times: open wings for the New Tera. 100% Brazilian, created and developed here, the new SUV manufactured at the Taubaté plant (SP) will make its debut during the Rio de Janeiro samba school parade, at the Marquás de Sapucaí Sambadrome, on March 2.

The design of the Nueva Tera is completely unheard of. Its lines were created by the artistic intelligences of the team of José Carlos Pavone, Head of Design Americas at Volkswagen. In the new teasers released by Volkswagen, the identities of the model's headlights and flashlights are shown, both in LED. At the front, the DRL signature is unique within the VW lineup, with fractional lighting, resulting in two segments. The taillights provide a lighting solution found in higher-speed models such as the Passat and Tiguan, and combine design and safety. The Novo Tera offers two different light expressions on the back: a position light that is already quite striking and another even more intense and with the presence of elements apparent in other shapes, which arise when the brake pedal is activated. The effect is called "click-clack".

Volks also unveils the C-column and volume above the wheel boxes: it's a new design sculpture, which also differentiates the Tera from the rest of the VW lineup. The diamond wheel, revealed in one of the images, brings its design elements that are repeated in five sessions and robustly "puch" Tera's body.

Re: Volkswagen readying Kylaq-based Compact SUV for 2026

New teaser reveals new styling for future models of the brand.

Volkswagen readying Kylaq-based Compact SUV for 2026-screenshot-20250228-212111.jpg

Highlight for the large front bumper grille which, in the case of the Tera, has a honeycomb shape, along with two side air intakes that are also well detached.

The LED headlights put a superior daytime running light signature, but separated into two parts, and there is no illuminated grille connecting the two sides, just a chrome fillet. The mirrors are exclusive, not reused parts from the Polo or Nivus, for example. A well-highlighted crease is on the rear side, connecting the door to the taillight.

Re: Volkswagen readying Kylaq-based Compact SUV for 2026

Volkswagen TERA, this is it!

-Tera aims at Fiat Pulse and Kardian, which have a wheelbase of 2,532 mm and 2,604 mm, respectively. Everything indicates that it will be the same as the Polo, which is 2.566 mm and has a length of 4.074 mm.

-Headlights and taillights are LED. The daytime running lights form an exclusive front signature, with lighting split into two segments over the headlights. There's no lighted grille linking the two sides - but just a chrome fillet.

-Highlight for the large opening of the front bumper which, in the Tera, has a honeycomb shape, along with two side air intakes that are also well detached. There are no fog lights.

-The mirrors are exclusive (they are not reused parts of the Polo or Nivus, for example). A well-highlighted crease is on the rear side, connecting the door to the taillight.

-At the rear, the taillights bring the same solution as Nivus, T-Cross and the new European Tiguan, with taillights interconnected by a black bar with silver fillets. Inside the taillights you can see LED fillets.

-The wheels of the car shown at the Sambadrome are diamond with a 17-inch rim and a very sporty design, but they have already seen more affordable steel options with hubcaps.

-The interior is inspired by the German ID. electrics, that is, new shapes that include the elevated multimedia center, but the dashboard follows its own style.

-Anticipating the launch that should take place in May.

Looks like Magnite Pro Max from rear third quarter .

But yes, Tera looks definitely better than Kylaq!

Let’s remember that the Kushaq / Taigun, Slavia / Virtus as well as the previous Vento / Rapid—All share body panels to a large extent. So why would the Kylaq’s VW clone be any different? Having a completely different “top hat” requires new body panels, new tooling etc. VW would surely differentiate the interiors, and also have some better features probably, but Im sure that the Kylaq and VW’s take on it will be a lot closer than something like a Tera which seems like a very different car altogether.

I said this before, and the more i look at these pictures, the more im convinced that the Tera is not VW’s take on the Kylaq. They are vastly different and I simply don’t believe that VW is going to all of a sudden create a all new “top-hat” for this model alone ( considering they have never done some thing like this earlier when they had mass market cars in the same platform).

Re: Volkswagen readying Kylaq-based Compact SUV for 2026

If VW decides to launch it in India, they have to focus on giving:

1. Flexible back seats which can recline and slide

2. Make sure that there is no compromise with handling and steering feedback, basically maintain the Polo dynamics

3. Ensure to give enough features if not all

Basically learn from Skoda Kylaq

You are absolutely right!

The Tera shares little to nothing with the Virtus-Slavia-Kushaq-Taigun quadruplets, unlike the Kylaq which is essentially a smaller Kushaq.

The Tera appears to be equipped with rear disc brakes too, which the Skodas and Volkswagens don’t come with.

I think we can safely assume that the Tera will not make it to India.

If (and this is a big IF) Volkswagen decides to enter the sub-compact SUV segment where the Kylaq presently resides, we can expect it to be similarly proportioned to the baby Škoda and equipped similarly as well.
