The brand perception between these two brands is quite interesting. While Skoda comes across as very executive and corporate when it comes to their styling, VW has built their brand around being sporty.

In the case of the India 2.0 cars, VW put the GT badge to great use whereas Skoda was extremely late to the party when they could have had Sportline, Monte Carlo and L&K variants from the get go.

Re: Volkswagen readying Kylaq-based Compact SUV for 2026

Based on Skoda's Fabia, VW's derivate of Kylaq which will appear in Brazil first will have a 170 TSI engine.

Quote:
Volkswagen's new entry-level SUV will have a 170 TSI engine, as Autos Segredos has been saying for a long time. with The 170 TSI engine that yields 116 hp of power at 5,000 rpm with ethanol and 109 hp of power at 5,000 rpm with gasoline in the tank. The common torque of the two fuels is 16,8 kgfm between 1.750 rpm and 4.250 rpm. The engine will be connected to the six-speed automatic transmission or the five-speed manual.
Quote:
Built from the MQB platform, the measurements of the A0 SUV should be around 4.10 meters in length, the wheelbase will be 2.56 m, the width will be close to 1.78 m and its height close to 1.45 m.
Quote:
Using the Skoda Fabia's monocoque, the VW 246 SUV keeps the doors with the same shape, but the stampings are new. The fenders have creases that make the sides more protruding. The wheel arches are finished in black, which is replicated on the lower part of the doors.
Quote:
The front is unprecedented with an exclusive hood, fenders, headlights and bumper, following the visual identity of the new VW Tiguan sold in Europe. The hood is well parallel to the floor and the headlights are horizontal and narrower.
Quote:
The main grille is narrower and a bar will connect the set of lights. At the bottom of the bumper, the VW 246 SUV will have a huge air intake. At the ends of the bumper, there will be two creases that should house the DRL lights.
Quote:
At the rear, the SUV that will be born from the VW 246 Project has an exclusive trunk lid compared to the Skoda Fabia. The taillights are horizontal and connected by a bar that must be illuminated.
VW's entry-level SUV will have a panel inspired by the Skoda Fabia.

I will not be surprised if they name it the 'Polo Cross' or 'Polo T Cross'. Even the design could be similar. The current T Cross is 4.1 metres long.

Astonishing to find that it took VW group 2000 crores to develop Kylaq/ Terra based on an existing platform. Turning profits after such a huge initial costs is an uphill task — let's wait and watch.

The Latin American version is 4.1 meters roughly same size as Taigun. Indian version should be less then 4 meters. Indian version is on MBQ A0 IN platform. So it should be a different car based on Kylaq.

They know how to splurge money that they can't recover. They know how to burn cash as if it's free. They are loosing money on all the cars they are making, be it in Europe or India. They should plan to completely transfer R&D to India or Brazil and leave it to Indian/ Latin engineering leaving the Europeans just to monitor. That is the only way they can save money. Else they will continue to be a sinking pit.

From the spy pics at least, the road presence of this VW version of the Karoq appears to be slouched and dimunitive compared to the Kylaq - just like the T-Roc was compared to the Karoq, even though they were based on the same platform.

Re: Volkswagen readying Kylaq-based Compact SUV for 2026

VW accelerates its testing of Tera, now seen in Brazil.

- Likely to have the exterior design cues of the European Tiguan.

- Will use a simpler configuration of the 1.0 turbo flex engine.

Quote:
Under the hood, the 1.0 TSI engine - widely used by Volkswagen cars in Brazil - will be the main engine option. According to rumors, the engine will be used in the 116 hp configuration (the same as the Polo) to distance itself from its cousins Nivus and T-Cross, which adopt the more powerful version of 128 hp. The transmission will be manual in the entry-level versions and automatic with 6 gears from the intermediate.

Re: Volkswagen readying Kylaq-based Compact SUV for 2026

If the same design is going to be used by VW for the Kylaq based car then I am sure it will sell more than the Skoda, similar to how the Taigun/Virtus are selling over Kushaq/Slavia.

Though I prefer this design over the uselessly fat SUVs, I believe the group should work on platforms which visually make the size bigger. This feels like a raised Golf TBH and except for a few enthusiasts this design might not work for India.

Re: Volkswagen readying Kylaq-based Compact SUV for 2026

From the spy pics, I absolutely love VW Tera's design. It gives T-Roc vibes as well as look elegant.

VW's variant of Kylaq would definitely outsell it due to VW's better brand recall & mature designs but even then I think VW should go with the Brazilian model design since it would help in differentiating it from Kylaq as well as most of the competition.

Again all depends on how much VW would be interested in investing for this car as a different design would mean more development cost & also less parts sharing.

Re: Volkswagen readying Kylaq-based Compact SUV for 2026

From the above spy pictures, the Tera does not seem to be VW’s version of Kylaq.

With the Tera, the design seems completely different; the Car seems wider, seems to have a different shape altogether and seems a bit more “squat” in its stance.

Let’s remember that the Kushaq / Taigun, Slavia / Virtus as well as the previous Vento / Rapid—All share body panels to a large extent. These cars are almost identical from A to the C pillar, the only differences being the bonnet, boot and bumpers, apart from having completely different interiors. So why would the Kylaq’s VW clone be any different? Having a completely different “top hat” requires new body panels, new tooling etc. VW would surely differentiate the interiors, and also have some better features probably, but Im sure that the Kylaq and VW’s take on it will be a lot closer than something like a Tera which seems like a very different car altogether.

Re: Volkswagen readying Kylaq-based Compact SUV for 2026

Shortening the Tera to fit under the 4-meter bracket and homologation, will entail significant investment.

It remains to be seen if VW will bother investing in R&D + local assembly of this car for the domestic market, given the bad press surrounding tax evasion allegations.
