September 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Wow! 14.24% vs. 14.23%. The second spot is being fiercely fought between Hyundai and Mahindra. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Mahindra overtaking sooner than expected. While the Creta’s domination is unprecedented, Hyundai would soon have to discover new strategies to maintain its position. The Venue facelift could provide a much-needed boost though.

Re: September 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Last month, I mentioned the Ertiga at the top as the highlight of the month, but this month, it showed me that it was not just luck as it retained the top position.

Once a topper, the Maruti Alto continues to stay at number 19, suggesting the state of small cars these days. We again have only four A or B segment cars in the Top 20 list, and all of them are from the Maruti family. Maruti continues to dominate the Top 10 count with 7 models in the list.

Hyundai has only the Creta in the Top 10 list and one more, the Venue, if we consider the Top 20 list. The picture continues to remain not good for the number 2 manufacturer. If Venue sales start falling, Hyundai would be left with only one car in the Top 20 list. I wonder what would have happened if the new Creta was not as successful as it is?

The Tata Punch continues to go down and has dropped to number 8. Punch received an update last month, but what happens if it's position continues to drop? Should we consider that it's golden period is over? Besides Punch, Tata only has the Nexon in the Top 20 list, which is again not an ideal situation for a manufacturer aiming for the number 2 slot.

While Hyundai and Tata have only two cars in the Top 20 list, Mahindra has 5 cars in the Top 20 list. Does this show future trends? I think Mahindra is slowly and steadily moving up the ladder. A battle to look forward?

Re: September 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Kudos to Mahindra!! Stellar numbers taking them to an all-time high. With the kind of vehicles they have been introducing recently, this is a much deserved position they are in. Tata is not doing bad themselves, considering every single model they have on sale today is doing decent numbers. Only the Tigor is doing 3-digit figures, every other model has 4-digit sales figures!

Market seems to have rejected Citroen's coupe SUV Basalt and shown lots of love for Tata's Curvv. Interesting to see Curvv on the Top gainers list and Basalt on the Top losers chart in their second month. Citroen and Jeep are in real deep trouble and they clearly need a change of strategy for India if they wish to survive here.

Same for Honda, as their Indian wing has been in the ICU for quite sometime now and the Elevate has failed to improve their situation. The company which once commanded a premium for its models based on its brand value, is not relegated to under pricing its SUV against Korean competition and still cannot make a mark.

Back in 2001, I remember reading a car comparison between Accent and City on Autocar, where the products were equally matched but Autocar declared the Honda City the winner as "The slanted H cannot match the brand equity of the straight H" !! How have times changed

Re: September 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Is C5 air cross actually on sale or they stopped producing it for India?

Also, what is happening with Verna? Both Slavia and Virtus have individually done more numbers than it. I guess many potential Verna customers walking in to Hyundai showroom are ending up booking Creta.

Re: September 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Altroz has been in a free fall in terms of sales for the last few months as compared to its peers. It is a relatively sorted product coming from Tata and is definitely due for a facelift.
I don't understand the stepson treatment it is getting but now that they have lost their No.3 position, they can focus on it to drive up sales numbers.

Re: September 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Overall good month for car manufacturer's. My two cents -

Citroen: Bad brand can spoil good car. Don't believe? See Basalt numbers. Brand only killing good car, sad but true. C3 Aircross numbers are shocking considering latest updates they had.

Honda: Going down and down, big reason to worry. City sales are shockingly low. They need to do something very quickly.

Hyundai: Alcazar with new model doing ok only. I guess pricing is high compared to Creta which people don't like. As usual Creta and Venue are their stars but their number 2 spot is in serious danger now.

Jeep: Missing Petrol badly. Discounts bringing some slightly better numbers.

Kia: Carens doing some good numbers so as Sonet. Seltos is nowhere near Creta numbers when both are same cars, almost.

Maruti: Ertiga is number 1 now & 7 in top 10. Overall good month but badly need Alto replacement as well as new models for for Ciaz, Celerio and S-presso.

MG: Nothing special, Comet actually doing much better numbers than everyone thought.

Renault & Nissan: Bad days ahead, no light in sight for both of them.

Skoda & VW: They are actually doing good considering their past history. 2.0 models still holding some good numbers.

Tata: All models are down except Curvv. Suddenly they are much behind Mahindra.

Toyota: Almost 60% sales coming from Maruti models. Innova and Fortuner keep doing their regular business.

& finally Star of the Month:

Mahindra: Outstanding numbers for them. Very very close to number 2 spot now and I am sure from next month onwards we will have Mahindra as number 2 regularly. All their SUV's doing extremely good. Kudos to their hard work and long term strategy they adopted.

Re: September 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I really want to talk to those 19 guys who purchased X-Trail and 6 guys who got Skoda- Superb to understand the reasoning behind their decision!

I'm confident that Mahindra will secure 2nd spot sometime soon unless Hyundai offers some decent discounts. Sad to see Tata at 4th spot. It looks like numbers lost by Maruti are covered by rebadged cars at Toyota, good strategy I must say.

Re: September 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

So , in the last 6 months sale of C2 segment sedans :

Virtus = 9788 units total
Verna = 8188 units
Slavia = 7327 units
and a distant fourth...
City = 5607 units

It seems that Honda has totally lost its plot in this segment with the City averaging only 800-1000 sales monthly.

Although sales of c2 sedans are on a declining trend the downfall of Honda on this front has been quite dramatic. This graph from statista cant be any more revealing. Sad to see the downfall of this once segment topper of many years.Probably Indians dont consider the city as "aspirational" any more. Whats the way forward for Honda? Maybe launch the City hatchback alongside, to start a new C2 hatchback segment in India?

Basalt is doing nothing for Citroen. Not sure how long they will stay. High chances for them to take the Datsun route. If I am not wrong, Datsun closed after 9 years of operations? Citroen does not have much time left, from the looks of it.
