Re: 2024 Mercedes E-Class V214 (Long Wheelbase) | A Close Look

The dashboard doesn't look classy.
Slapping a tablet in place of speedo console.
Curvy dash contours.
Lack of definition in the areas of the dash, due to gloss black treatment across the board.

The rear seats look supremely comfortable, reflecting the comfort of a recliner.

Re: 2024 Mercedes E-Class V214 (Long Wheelbase) | A Close Look

Looks are pretty subjective but for me the silhouette of car looks like almost like any large sedan on sale today apart from the badge. Also its hard to differentiate it from a C-Class at a distance except when you are looking at it head on.

For me the 1990s W124 E-Class was one of the cars I always aspired to own but when I finally could afford one the looks of this generation(some how doesn't look like that solid chiseled Mercedes sedan) didn't appeal to me so it was never considered. However the interiors are one step above BMW 5 series. For Mercedes high maintenance costs and reliability are a always a concern as seen in recent reliability rankings.

The new 5 series has a lot of negative feedback regarding its looks but I think after a while you get accustomed to it and the regular wheel base version looks pretty sporty and distinctive.

Re: 2024 Mercedes E-Class V214 (Long Wheelbase) | A Close Look

This design is offensive to me, The E class from 2000’s would fall in disgrace seeing this, what is up with Mercedes? What happened to the clean bold lines? The interior has no soul, you can’t just slap on screens and call it as interior.

Today i feel only Audi has some design sense left in them, their designs are clean straight and timeless look at the current A6 even that aging girl looks better than this monstrosity.

This is the best time to buying the outgoing E Class at least it will age gracefully.

Re: 2024 Mercedes E-Class V214 (Long Wheelbase) | A Close Look

The headlights look like they melted and deformed into the grille. Directionless design. Mid-size luxury sedans have gone to the dogs wherein looks are concerned. The F10/G30 with an M kit or a W212/213 pre facelift with an AMG kit still turns more heads than these new confusions.

Interiors are no better. Why not make a round screen on the steering wheel as well? Infuriating to say the least. Digital equipment was good while it was a bonus over design, and not the entire damn design.

Re: 2024 Mercedes E-Class V214 (Long Wheelbase) | A Close Look

I was really excited for the new E Class to arrive and got in touch with the dealer for pre-booking too until i drove the car. Currently I am traveling in Montreux and while renting a car, i asked the agency here if they have a E Class. And they gave me a 2024 E Class 220d.

I have driven nearly 400 km so far and I am not really impressed. While the aesthetics of interior has really improved, the material and quality is downgraded. The steering controls and the whole cockpit feels plasticy and the seat controls are too stiff to use. I am never sure when it works and when it doesn't. The driver assistance features are fantastic and the car does a great job in reducing the drivers fatigue but i am not sure if any of this is coming to India.

This is not a LWB version that is coming to India but the back seat is still quite cosy. As much as i was looking forward to this car coming to India, it's now a pass for me. It's everything but not close to a S.

Does the E-Class have Adaptive Cruise Control ? There are conflicting reports on this on the Internet. Can you confirm this please ? Thank you.

Re: 2024 Mercedes E-Class V214 (Long Wheelbase) | A Close Look

I’m honestly disappointed with Mercedes-Benz India. They have chosen to skip the feel-good features like
  • Ventilated seats
  • Massaging seats
  • Adaptive suspension
  • Digital LED projector headlights
  • Star on the bonnet (traditional grille)
  • Powerful 6-cylinder engine option
  • Rear-wheel steering
The E-class defines the Mercedes-Benz brand in India and that’s the car they entered the Indian market with in 1994. Hence, ideally we should have got a fully loaded E-class with the above features that looks like this (minus the low profile tyres)

Instead, this is what we got

Yes, Mercedes-Benz India can argue that most of the E-class buyers are chauffeur driven and don’t care about these missing features, but then the air of desirability is lost among the self-driven owners, enthusiasts, youth and kids.

Re: 2024 Mercedes E-Class V214 (Long Wheelbase) | A Close Look

Hopefully they bring E350d soon. That straight six paired with the air suspension on the last gen E was absolute perfection for long journeys. A delight to drive and be driven in. The all screen setup tho looking futuristic will tend to look a cheap and outdated in a few years, and Mercedes should have retained buttons for climate control and volume. Tapping through screens for basic functions is a pain in the ass.

Like the other media people, I had a very short time with the car and no driving time. There was no mention of it in the presentation either.

Media drives are happening next week and our review will be up in short while after that. Please wait.

Any news on when and if 6cyl versions of the V214 will be launched here in India?

Thank you for your response. I am posting a picture of the steering wheel showing buttons "Set+". Aren't this indicative of the availability of the Adaptive Cruise Control feature or could this be some other functionality and not ACC in your opinion ? Thank you once again.

Nothing. There is no indication of the introduction of the regular wheelbase version either. The long wheelbase (LWB) has been developed for two markets - China and India. I feel LWB cars measuring over 5 metres in length are almost never going to be driven by their owners. In this car, the rear is the place to be. I don't think we will see any big engines in the V214.

I haven’t played around much with ADAS in my GLC but I have the exact same Set+ / Set- in my GLC and they are used to increase / reduce the speed limit when combined with the Cruise Control / Speed Limiter buttons that are to its left.

Per se, I don’t think the buttons are indicative of “adaptive" cruise control. The buttons can be used for cruise control simpliciter. Having said that, as I mentioned, I really haven't dived into the ADAS features beyond my sole interest of keeping it turned OFF.

Re: 2024 Mercedes E-Class V214 (Long Wheelbase) | A Close Look

The exterior design looks banal. The headlights plain awful.

The dashboard with screens looks very disproportionate. 5 has done a wonderful job in this dept.

I can already the feel the empty real-estate in front of the front seat passenger.

It still looks like getting the trophy for rear seat comfort.

Overall, a non-aspirational package for me. But sadly, nothing does, in this segment category sedans.
