Japan-spec Maruti Fronx gets ADAS and all-wheel drive

Recently, Maruti Suzuki began exports of the made-in-India Fronx to Japan. The first batch of cars was shipped off from Gujarat’s Pipavav port. Now, new details of the Japan-spec Fronx have emerged.

According to media reports, the Fronx sold in Japan is equipped with Suzuki’s AllGrip Select AWD tech, which is not available on the Indian version. The AllGrip Select is not a full-fledged all-wheel drive system like AllGrip Pro. It has four off-road modes – Auto, Sport, Snow and Lock. In Sport and Snow modes, power is sent to the rear axle.

The Fronx AWD is powered by a 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol engine paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Moreover, the crossover also gets a different suspension setup.

Another feature that’s missing in the Indian Fronx but is available on the Japan-spec car is ADAS. The safety suite includes lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and automatic cruise control. The Fronx also has front parking sensors, an electronic parking brake with hill-hold, heated seats, and other features.

Now waiting for the hue and cry that Indian keyboard warriors make (100%) and criticize Maruti for not being enthusiast focused and then go and buy a Fronx Delta plus CNG (99%).

Bingo!!
These guys didn't buy the Scross 1.6, Jimny before discount and even Fronx turbo yet want Maruti to make cars for the 'enthusiast'.

Hypocrisy at it's finest

Re: Japan-spec Maruti Fronx gets ADAS and all-wheel drive

So, basically, the India-manufactured Japan-market Fronx has the same engine+gearbox combo as our Grand Vitara AWD version - Right??

Same 1.5L K15C Petrol and same All Grip Select. But way lighter and, therefore, more fun?

The South African Fronx also, AFAIK, is sold with the 1.5L K15C Petrol.

K15C, while missing the Fun to drive factor on the bigger Brezza/GV/Ertiga et al, should be fare better on the smaller FronX for sure.

Makes me wonder, how mammoth the production scale of K15C for Maruti Suzuki, considering it sells around 40-50k units per month in India alone (combined sales of Brezza, Ertiga, Grand Vitara, Hyryder,XL6) , and then it also exports the same Engine to South Africa, Japan etc.

Those are just staggering figures !

S-Cross and Jimny didn't sell much because of poor pricing. The top spec S-Cross 1.6 was priced over the top selling Creta, a proper SUV, at the time of launch while the S-Cross is a cross over. Bad pricing led to the failure of both these cars, as is evident from the discounts offered later on. Had the pricing been correct during launch, I believe both these cars would have seen better sales numbers. Also don't forget the fact that Jimny was up against the market leader - the Thar!

Neither distracting HMIs nor overenthusiastic intervention make driving any safer. It is probably for the best that brands like Suzuki and VW are working with vendors to retrain their ADAS based on Indian data instead of hastily jumping onto the trend.

FYI: no serious manufacturer would launch a family car in Japan without ADAS — last year JNCAP gave the Toyota 86 a 2-star rating just because it didn't have ADAS

Bro you just killed the thread!

Anyway, I fully agree with you! Indian keyboard warriors are very fond of crying over cars that don't get launched in India because obviously, a manufacturer knows it's customer better than some random keyboard warrior.

The Grand Vitara AllGrip gets the same system in India as this Fronx AWD and yet its sales are just 3% of total Grand Vitara sales. Even in case of Thar, 90% cars sold after RWD Thar launch were RWD and 4x4 demand has decreased significantly.

When people are buying the economical versions even in case of niche vehicles, I'm not sure how we keep expecting manufacturers to provide something good.

It is also becoming fashionable to troll Suzuki’s safety for internet clout. Not on the forum but elsewhere I see the same people who point out real problems with ADAS when their favourite cars are sold without it suddenly using this news to “prove” Maruti are compromising on Indian customers’ safety.

VW also exports the Virtus and Taigun to Mexico with ADAS. I don’t think a thread on that would get as much attention :)
