July 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ uni6ts (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Re: July 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

240 units for Kodiaq is good, beats Tucson by a fair margin. Infact Kodiaq numbers are closer to the combined figures of Compass and Meridian.

Virtus is now consistently topping the C sedan segment. Slavia numbers have considerably dropped.

Honda sales are just going south with both City and Elevate losing month on month.

Nothing to say about Creta, it’s unstoppable on sales.

Price cut of Rs 2L for XUV700 top variant seems to help Mahindra post improved sales number for XUV700 in July.

Re: July 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Good to see Jimny as the top gainer. From a low 3 digit numbers to 2k+. It seems the discounts are working out in it's favor. Hope MS accepts it and does a price correction.

On the other hand, Honda should be concerned about reducing sales of Elevate. And why have the numbers of Triber, Slavia & Baleno suddenly gone down.

Re: July 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

EV sales in July.

- Tata Motors sells 4,752 EVs in JULY 2024, down 13% YoY

This constitutes a YoY decline of 13% YoY (July 2023: 5,470 EVs), reflecting the increased competition in the marketplace. In July 2024, Tata Motors share of the ePV market was 63%, down from the 70% it had in July 2023.

- MG Motor India, which has two EVs on sale (the ZS EV and Comet EV), sold 1,520 units in July – its best monthly performance in the year to date. This gives it a market share of 20%, improving upon its year-ago share of 16% in July 2023.

-Mahindra & Mahindra is ranked third on the e-PV ladder-board with sale of 485 XUV 400s, its sole EV, in July 2024, up 27% (July 2023: 380 units). This gives the company a 6.45% EV market share for the month. M&M’s seven-month sales in the year to date are 4,325 units, up 117% YoY (January-July 2023: 1,985 units).

Luxury EV retails down 14%, UP 28% in Jan-Jul 2024

-BMW India is the luxury EV market leader both in July (70 units) and in January-July 2024 (615 units). While the July sales are down 34% (July 2023: 107), the cumulative seven-month sales are up 4% YoY (January-July 2023: 589).

- Mercedes-Benz India, with 30 units in July 2024, sold 7 fewer EVs than it did in July 2023. However, its January-July 2024 sales (435 EVs) are up 85% YoY (January-July 2023: 235 EVs).

-Volvo Auto India saw 40 of its EVs going home to new buyers in July, five more than in July 2023. Cumulative seven-month sales at 314 units are a 13% improvement over year-ago sales of 277 units.

- Audi India sold 17 EVs in nine EVs last month, compared to nine in July 2023. The carmaker’s first seven-month sales this year at 99 units are up 90% YoY versus the 52% in the year-ago period.

Re: July 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Few pointers:

1. Jimny has done well, but only due to the discounts on offer (1.5-2.5 lacs). Goes to show, that Maruti overpriced the Jimny and had it been priced well at launch, it would not have been a sales failure as it is today.

2. Creta at Number 1 and Alto at Number 20. Who would have thought about it 10 years ago ? Goes to show how macro-economic and buyer preferences have drastically reversed over the past decade, specially post Covid.

3. FronX has cannibalized sales of the sibling Baleno. Goes to show that the common Indian buyer prefers the "SUVish stance/looks" over the conventional hatchbacks. This is well apparent in the sales of FronX and Punch.

4. Combined sales of Toyota-Maruti JV (Grand Vitara/Hyryder) are at nearly the same level as the mighty Creta's (~17k). Goes to show how the JV has done well for both the manufacturers. But where both have missed the plot is the sales of the strong Hybrid variant. Most of the sales of the GV/Hyryder combined come from the Mild Hybrid, and not the strong Hybrid. What did they miss ? Perhaps, the Indian car buyer is not yet ready to pay more for the Hybrids, given the cost difference and other factors (like loss of boot space). Government needs to give more incentive to Strong Hybrids to make them more attractive.

5. Honda's downfall continues with the Elevate and Amaze. Where did they go wrong ? A company can't rely on 1-2 models for the bulk of their sales and to pull buyers to the showrooms. They need to put their sleeves up and gear up for to bring multiple cars to India, with more aspirational feature list and options of engines, increase their after-sales network and rekindle the interest of buyers in Honda cars, before its too late.

Re: July 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

The Ertiga + XL6 + Rumion combo with nearly 20,000 units would be the highest selling car in India. Mind blowing sales for a people mover.

Exactly one year later, and Honda's sales pre vs post Elevate have decreased from ~4800 to ~4600. The City is selling < 1000 units since quite some time and the Elevate is falling MoM despite discounts. With no new cars until 2027, how are they expecting to sustain themselves without even CKDs and CBUs of global cars ? Or do they see themselves as a one-trick pony, like Nissan, banking on mass-market Amaze to fetch volumes for their dealers, export strategy notwithstanding ?

Looking at Nissan's not even half-hearted strategy for launching the X-Trail in India as if they have done us a favour by gracing it for India when global sales for this pre-facelift model had wrapped up elsewhere. And the gall to price it at 50 lakhs. At this juncture, I would much rather see Citroen revive its India operations than Nissan. Wouldn't mind them leaving. They don't deserve the love that people have shown for the Magnite in india for the past 3.5 years.

Re: July 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Comparing the July 2023 and July 2024 numbers in the manufacturers sales table, total vehicles dispatched in July 2023 was 3,51,908 and July 2024 was 3,43,026, a decline of around 9.75% compared to 2023. Dispatches are down in July 2024. Only Mahindra, Toyota and Kia (by a small margin) have dispatched more in July 2024 compared to July 2023. No wonder all manufacturers are offering discount now.

Other than the Indian and Korean manufacturers, everyone else seems to be struggling for survival.

Re: July 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Maruti's falling sales across segments is a wake-up call to the brand. Not all Indians care only about Mileage, they also care about safety and more over they want people questioning why did you buy a "tin ka dabba" brand.

Maruti has to GROW OUT of "kitna deti hai" mindset. They have the capability of producing well engineered well built cars instead of compromising so much on build quality. Many OEMs have resurrected based on build quality perception (Tata for example). I am happy to see them fall, so that, the management realize they need to do better on safety.

Re: July 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Today I was at Toyota and Maruti showrooms looking for Hyryder and GV hybrid version.
Sales rep said due to UP government’s initiative of zero RTO on hybrid cars, they have seen a jump in sales in last 1 month. Almost 800 bookings of Hycross and 200 Hyryder has been received by them in just a month. However, they also said that this discount can be stopped soon by Government when 25000 limit is reached. They also said that other states are also contemplating similar scheme.
So, it seems this could be one of the reasons in sudden jump in Hyryder numbers.
BTW, is there a way to know the bifurcation of non-hybrid to hybrid sales volume for each model of Maruti and Toyota. I searched a lot but couldn’t find anything.
