July 2024 | The Hyundai Creta is the best-selling car in India!

Finally, the most beloved SUV/crossover in India, CRETA has gained the top position in July-24 sales (if numbers in the Financial Express are correct. Please refer the link given below).

https://www.financialexpress.com/aut...eller/3574975/

The shared images are of July and June 24.

It's a big achievement for Creta considering the segment to which it belongs. Number 2,3,4,5 belong to a segment lower or more than that.

With the festive seasons coming up, I am sure the Creta will see more numbers. Interesting to watch will be how Curvv performs and able to give reasonable fight to the Creta.

re: July 2024 | The Hyundai Creta is the best-selling car in India!

Once the Creta EV is launched, I wouldn't be surprised to see it exceed 20,000 units sold in some months—a truly impressive feat. Conversely, for maruti it's surprising to observe the new Swift couldn't take back the no.1 position despite its recent launch, and the Grand Vitara, which was intended to compete with the Creta, is lagging behind even after significant discounts, particularly for the full hybrid model. In fact the fully Hybrid Vitara discounts are bigger than the what's being offered on the Jimny. Returning to the main subject, the Creta's ability to dominate the market is remarkable, even in the face of competition, including its sibling, the Kia Seltos, their combined sales figure is approximately 23,000 units!

88.8% YoY change for Ertiga? Wow, how did that happen? What changed in that segment that gave Ertiga such a boost?

I'm surprised to see Scorpio in the top 10 list too. Do we have a breakdown of whether it is the Scorpio Classic or the new Scorpio N that is leading the charts?

I believe it's a typo error. Maruti Ertiga YOY growth is 9%. or 8.88% to be precise.

This is simply surreal for Creta to beat once a segment leader, the MS Swift; inspite the Swift being a generation change model and Creta just a FL.

Honestly speaking, I know a few folks who have replaced their 1st gen Ceta with the 2nd gen. Some even have replaced the 2nd gen with the FL model. The answer is pretty simple - they simply cannot find a suitable 'lateral' replacement for the Creta!

After owning the 1st-gen Ceta for 9 years now, if I'm in the market to replace this; for sure I'll pay a close look to the Creta FL.

Aside, I am surprised to see Baleno missing from the Top 10 list. Something is not adding up?

re: July 2024 | The Hyundai Creta is the best-selling car in India!

Indian purchasing power is steadily on the rise. Who would have imagined a 1.5 million rupee car leading the tally? Crazy!

Also, super interesting is that a humble 11 variant Brezza (Petrol + CNG + Auto) selling more than 35+ variant Nexon (Petrol + Diesel + CNG + AMT + DCT + EV). Kudos to Tata for providing so many options but Maruti must be smiling broadly for how the Brezza, Wagon-R, Swift, etc are still flying off the shelf.

Re: July 2024 | The Hyundai Creta is the best-selling car in India!

I can think off a couple of points :

- As someone had pointed out earlier, this is an indicator of the rising purchasing power of the great Indian Middle Class

- If Creta is the new Swift, Hyundai ( & Kia ) are on the way to become the new Maruti. Trust me, this might happen sooner than expected

- Earlier today, during a 3 AM airport run, all the Taxis I could see were a Maruti - Wagon-Rs & Dzires. This should ring alarm bells for the snoozing brand management teams of Maruti (if they have one)

- If at all this trend continues and it's reinforced as a "Taxi" company like the erstwhile Tata during 1990s, they're doomed in the long run

- My dad (retired now) is driving a bullet proof reliable 3rd Gen Swift DDIs for the past 13 years and have clocked close to a lakh kilometers. When time comes to replace his trusted stead, it might most likely be the Nios top end for the excellent packaging of the product.

Re: July 2024 | The Hyundai Creta is the best-selling car in India!

Can we have a category segregation to give clarity on how much of these sales numbers are towards commercial vehicle and personal vehicle? It will truly reflect the purchase behavior of people and reveal which manufacturer is preferred by people for their own use. I'm sure Hyundai will be much closer, if not neck to neck, to Maruti Suzuki in that case.

Let's not get carried away. Impressive feat but post covid most people are all about living for the moment. The important question is, what percentage of monthly income did buyers of the top 10 cars spend in 2019 vs today. That will answer whether the middle class is really growing or whether it's a sign of FOMO or YOLO.

As for the product, Hyundai and Kia really know their customers. I've driven the Creta diesel automatic in a recent trip to the hills and I've been thoroughly impressed. You wouldn't miss your VW unless you wanted to smoke every corner.

Re: July 2024 | The Hyundai Creta is the best-selling car in India!

I believe income in India is rising but more than that Creta has become an aspirational product. I see many people having other cars want to experience Creta. I know a home interior contractor (with limited income) selling his alto & taking loan to buy Creta.

And this is majorly to do with the car itself. People might say that Creta is just a feature rich car with 3 star rating & nothing great about it. But since its launch in 2015 it has been gaining popularity because its a no nonsense car. It is extremely smooth to drive in the city and can take up roughness of highways and bad roads. Ladies find it very easy to drive. Service cost is pretty under control and I do not hear cases of major breakdowns. Creta on launch came with 3 years warranty with free RSA. This added confidence among people when not many manufacturers were offering the same.

For other manufacturers to compete with Creta its important to think beyond. For now I see everyone trying to match what Creta if offering but failing to reach that level. Either they try to add too many features which has issues or their service support is sub-par. And many times while matching Creta the cost reaches so high that it becomes unviable. Long way to go....

It's good to see Punch selling nearly as much as Wagon R. It has been many years since I owned a tata car, but I guess the quality should have improved remarkably by now.

Re: July 2024 | The Hyundai Creta is the best-selling car in India!

A vague guess: May be people who were the part of those top selling cars like Wagon R, Swift etc are moving to next segment. Upgrading their cars could be an additional reason?
(PS: We owned a Santro 22 years ago, moved to an i10 14 years ago, Venue 5 years ago and found Creta an upgrade and got one last week).

Re: July 2024 | The Hyundai Creta is the best-selling car in India!

Is it that the purchasing power is rising, or that people are more willing to take out loans to buy the car they want vs the car they need/can afford.

The previous generation of "middle class" usually had a lot of responsibilities and an entire family (read Father,Mother,Sisters, brother etc) from their young age itself to take care of them while often being the sole breadwinner.

Compare that to the young middle class of today : They don't need to toil hard and save every penny to treat their ailing parents or marry off their sister or even build a house for them since their parents don't rely on them completely and have some savings/pension to take care of their day to day needs as well as probably live in a decent house they built.

This allows the new generation to spend more on themselves or allow them to take more risk(take out a loan) in the hope of paying it off since they don't have too many responsibilities other than taking care of themselves.
