BMW now offers 10-year extended warranty in India

For the first time in India, BMW now offers an extended warranty of up to 10 years on its cars.

The 10-year extended warranty package is available for all new cars across all models on sale in India. It is only applicable to original factory-built product specifications. It does not cover accessories or parts like ceramic brakes, performance enhancements, repairs or replacement parts due to excessive wear and tear or misuse.

The extended warranty is transferable to subsequent owners but not transferable to another car. Customers can opt for any higher package of the same package by paying the difference amount of both (old and new) package validity. Upgrade is allowed only within the package.

Extended warranty packages can only be ordered within the standard warranty period, which is 2 years from the date of purchase.

Genius! That's the best way to retain customers for their after sales service.

Also, it gives confidence to existing BMW owners and strengthens value in the pre-owned market. It's truly a win-win in my books.

Re: BMW now offers 10-year extended warranty in India

Pretty brilliant move by BMW, I must say. They have been often criticised in their newer products for being underpowered (looking at you X1), or dropping the ball on certain expected features and what not. With this move, BMWs will now certainly hold their value better than ever before, because peace of mind is something that's very hard to beat as a "feature". Hope more manufacturers follow suit. Especially the luxury badges, because if you're willing to shell the big bucks, you shouldn't have to worry about the nitty gritty of car repairs and maintenance.

10 years is really a shocking move and will sure scare the Merc and Audi management team.
I feel for the old BMW fans who lost the appeal towards BMW can now think again. Even though the new cars are not at all good looking, at least they have 10 years of peace of mind

This warranty is not the same as the one provided with a new BMW purchase, it is a third party warranty in partnership with Bajaj. The claims process may not be as smooth as the original BMW warranty.

Great news, BMW is certainly taking the fight to the other Germans with this one, an option for a 10-year extended warranty will certainly provide peace of mind to its cutomers.

Re: BMW now offers 10-year extended warranty in India

This is terrific! Not only are BMWs as reliable as Japanese cars, but this 10-year warranty is the icing on the cake. It will make for very fuss-free ownership as luxury cars cost a BOMB to maintain once they cross the 7-8 year mark. And it does take time + effort to keep them running in top shape.

That being said:

- What is the pricing? BMW has steadily increased its extended warranty pricing over the years. Is it worth it? Can any BHPian share quotes? EDIT: Just saw BHPian RPM posted above at about the same time as me.

- It also means that, to keep your warranty active, you will have to service the car at the authorised workshop for 10-years. That will cost you a pretty penny. Many owners would prefer to, as it's a smooth experience. Not everyone knows a great independent garage they can trust, or want to jump through the hoops in the aftermarket.

- No remaps, no modifications for 10 years.

As long as it's being offered through BMW India and their official channels, I wouldn't worry about claims at all. Plus, BMW is known to be very generous with warranty approvals.

There are many such programs that are underwritten by 3rd-parties.

What are the two columns for? 20 lakhs for a 5 series is very serious money. I don't think that the cars are reliable anymore

F/M - When the warranty is purchased within the first month of the new car billing.
L/S - When the warranty is purchased after the 1st month from the date of purchase.

in my opinion, the 6 year warranty seems reasonable. Post that, it seems like a lot of money - 2L for the 7th year, 3L for the 8th year, 4L for the 9th year, 6L for the 10th year.

Re: BMW now offers 10-year extended warranty in India

Brilliant!

More OEMs need to offer such extended warranties. 10 years is a serious long time in an ownership cycle and should cover quite a bit of maintenance.

We are in the process of buying a Seltos X line and it's a shame that Kia offers only 5 years of extended warranty while its sister company, Hyundai, offers it for up to 7 years (interestingly, 7 years extended warranty is only available for petrol engines). With a market full of complex and less reliable DSGs/DCTs, consumers will need longer warranties.

I guess for such long tenures, we need to see the future value of money as well. They will need to incorporate that as we are paying the money lumpsum as of today. So 6 lakhs after 10 years will be valued around 2.75 lakhs considering 8% rate which is not too bad considering the probability of major claims is high in the 10th year. Imagine how much more costly spares would be if we have pay after 10 years without warranty.

This is going to be a necessity for all manufactures moving forward. Need them 10 screens and all gizmos working even after 7 years!

Re: BMW now offers 10-year extended warranty in India

Peace of Mind doesn't come cheap though. From the pricing it seems 10 year is just a marketing gimmick. 7th or 8th year is a sweet spot. For a 3er, 8th year BRI is at 8.08 lacs while the same for 10th year is 17.00 lacs. Something is expected to go wrong within 9th or 10th year, by which car would have depreciated to 25-30%, coming to 20 lacs lets say. Is it wise to spend another 9 lacs to keep the car for 2 additional years?

Re: BMW now offers 10-year extended warranty in India

Yikes! Just saw the pricing details uploaded by R.P.M. and I have to say, the 10-year warranty makes a poor case for itself.

- 20 lakhs for the 5-Series for 10 years?! That is plain ridiculous pricing. 20-lakhs is the direct cost, the indirect additional cost is compulsory servicing & maintenance at authorised dealerships.

- Why is there no 100,000 km option? I am only seeing unlimited km or 200,000 km. I know more 10-year old BMWs that are around the 1-lakh km mark than 2-lakh km. Capping it at 100,000 km has got to make the pricing more fair.

- As things stand, it's better to go for the 6-year plan for 4.3 lakhs. Invest the balance 14-lakhs and you can maintain your car from the investment appreciation / interest income.
