Re: Manual Mode in AT | How often do you use it?

In our WagonR AMT, I use the auto mode only in bumper - to - bumper traffic, otherwise I prefer manual mode all the time. Somehow, I have never been able to gain confidence on the AMT box during overtakes and quick lane changes over all these years.

Re: Manual Mode in AT | How often do you use it?

I use the manual mode frequently in the following situations-
  1. When going over a ramp or an incline at slow speeds, I use the manual mode and slot it into 1st because DSG has a habit of lugging on D2 and slipping the clutch, which I’m not a big fan of.
  2. When I drive my car in stop go traffic for prolonged period then if I get a straight road with less traffic, I drive my car in manual mode in 4 or 5 th gear and burn some soot by driving at relatively higher rpms at 2500-3500rpm
  3. If I’m overtaking and I feel that DSG is in the mood to up shift, I use the manual mode. After driving DQ200 for 1L kms, I have understood the gearbox characteristics very well and so has the gearbox learned my driving style

Re: Manual Mode in AT | How often do you use it?

Voted Other - cause I hate the manual shifts on the gear lever. But if the vehicle is equipped with paddle shifts, I often find myself using it on highways and occasionally in cities too.

Honda City V AT 2010 here. I too use the paddle shifters on the highways. Pushing to the redline on I VTEC engines is a beautiful feeling that I love

Re: Manual Mode in AT | How often do you use it?

I have had all kinds of ATs in the cars I have owned - CVT, Torque Converter, DCT etc. I have only ever used the manual mode/sports mode/paddle shifters when coming downhill to keep the vehicle in second gear.

Re: Manual Mode in AT | How often do you use it?

I use a semi-auto mode when going downhill and sometimes when overtaking. But while most people would use it to hold a gear, I use it to go to a higher one because I think it sometimes unnecessarily holds on to a lower gear even when there's no need. It breaks the momentum I want while going downhill, not too fast, but not too slow either. But I wouldn't do it on really steep slopes, like the Tilari Ghat for example.

While overtaking, the TC box on the Slavia 1.0 takes a second to respond, which is when the paddles come in handy. Also, when cruising at an exact 80, I nudge the gearbox to shift to the 6th rather than stay in the 5th waiting to hit 82-83 km/h to shift to the 6th.

On the other hand, I don't see a need to stay in full manual mode at any point. I bought the AT for a reason and would like to put it to good use.

Re: Manual Mode in AT | How often do you use it?

I drive the dreaded DCT DQ200 from Volkswagen.

Manual all the time unless I am multi tasking while driving.

Re: Manual Mode in AT | How often do you use it?

Voted others. On the highway, I use paddle shifters to drop a gear or two in anticipation of a quick acceleration, usually to pass another car. Not used in the city. The Volvo downshifts when coasting, so I think selecting lower gears for going downhill is required. At least I have not.

Re: Manual Mode in AT | How often do you use it?

Voted other, if it has paddle shifters, and the car will let me shift without going into Manual mode, I might use it, otherwise I just stick it into drive and let it do it's thing.. at least in the city

Re: Manual Mode in AT | How often do you use it?

I have used the manual mode in my earlier cars in two instances:
- For engine braking during a road trip we were on, where the descents were steep and numerous
- Once I had the DPF light come on, and if I remember correctly, the owner's manual suggested driving at 70 km/h in 4th gear. I used the M mode to hold the car in 4th gear.

Re: Manual Mode in AT | How often do you use it?

Can't vote but my answer is 'No'

I have Creta CVT and have never used the manual mode or paddle shifters. Those were only used once to test the manual mode only.

Re: Manual Mode in AT | How often do you use it?

I use the manual mode only on ghat secions / inclines / downhill roads. No point in using the manual mode in the city.

Re: Manual Mode in AT | How often do you use it?

I drive a 2024 Safari and quite frankly, have never felt the need to use the manual mode. The AT gearbox is more than capable for most situations. I drive a lot in the mountains as well, so I engage Sport mode then, but still have never felt the need to shift to Manual. The Sport mode makes hill drives very very engaging!

Re: Manual Mode in AT | How often do you use it?

Voted Never - Hexa AT & Tiago EV

The whole point of buying Hexa AT was to use less effort physically. I’d also like to extend the benefits to mentally as well. Also my Tiago EV doesn’t have manual mode

Re: Manual Mode in AT | How often do you use it?

Never for me in 28K Kms of AT driving ( prior to that I had manuals)

I believe only owners having Basic AMT (Alto, Swift / Dzire) need manual override, rest gearboxes are capable to take care of Indian roads / uphills etc.
