Well I guess it is not going to live up to expectations then. Only buyers will be those who want a 3 door thar but can’t afford to have it as their only car.

I wonder if they are going to call it the Centurion, going by the C shaped DRLs, instead of Armada!

Calling it Armada will dilute the Thar SUV brand image of the 5 door.

Agree that Armada used to a popular workhorse, however giving this name(Armada) will make the Thar 5 door sound more utilitarian/MUV'ish rather than a hardcore SUV.
It will deprive the Thar 5 door or a more premium image.

Centurion sounds like a fresh/new and better/premium sounding suffix to the Thar.

If I were to make a guess, considering the way the Indian buyers are presently not even blinking at new car prices, Mahindra may actually choose to once again re-define/ re-create the whole segment by making this a standalone product which is family friendly, comfortable and spacious, yet-go-anywhere and a make it into a tremendously desirable product, rightfully deserving a standalone position by itself.

I would not at all be surprised if the Thar 5 door becomes positioned as an equivalent to the Scorpio N as a parallel product. Those who want the ruggedly handsome Jeepy looks will go for this. And those who prefer the more ‘rounded’ Fortuner rivalling SUV ish looks will go for the Scorpio N.

(Consider the relative positioning of the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited in various markets. It is a standalone product and attracts a very different type of buyer when compared to the buyers for the Grand Cherokee and similar.)

The above is pure speculation on my part but it seems to me a highly plausible positioning cue.

They can pick from their many legacy names or coin something absolutely new too. But the Thar prefix will definitely need to be there to continue the ‘cult’ / ‘tribe’ thing.

Armada
Marshall
Commander
Centurion

Etc

All worthy names in my book and some of them are intertwined nicely into Mahindra’s History and that which isn’t, is worthy by itself.

More pics of the 5d Thar:

the interior images of Thar 5-door reveals an all new white and black colour interior theme. But, previously seen the SUV with all black as well as black and brown colour theme. This hints at multiple interior colour options the Mahindra could offer with the Thar 5-door.

Will there be automatic climate control on offer in 5 door Thar? Since I am not able to infer this from numerous spy shots shared in this forum, I am asking this question.

re: Field trials of the 4-door Mahindra Thar begin!

Thar 5 door seems to get all the modern safety and tech. features from Scorpio N but one thing stood out for me- Remember the Thar e concept? The 5 doors seem to follow its design and gets the same Fortuner/GLE-esq side 3rd window and D pillar-mounted rear door handles!. On the whole, it looks to be a great derivate but as a current Thar softop owner I feel Mahindra made it too much like Scorpio N instead of a larger Thar (case in point- absent rollover bars like current Thar (all wranglers get them too), roof seems to be of metal along with fabric room liners (meaning no provisions to go topless), etc)

Notice both Thar 5 door's and Thar e concept's similar looking last row windows

re: Field trials of the 4-door Mahindra Thar begin!

They seem to have addressed almost all major gaps in the current 3 Door Thar top end model:
  • Sunroof
  • Metallic top
  • Push button start
  • 6 airbags
  • LED headlamps
  • Front parking sensors
  • Front center armrest
  • Rear AC vents
  • Modern steering wheel
  • Fully digital instrument cluster
  • Bigger touchscreen infotainment
  • Ample boot space
  • Rear defogger and wiper
  • Fuel lid that can be opened without going around the car with key in hand
  • Even bigger and more majestic 19 inch wheels
  • Higher engine tune (though this is just the reviewer'a view and not confirmed)
  • Rear center armrest
  • ACC (not sure but looks like it is there)

I suspect they may have also added Frequency Selective Damping as in the ScorpioN as they seem to be throwing in a lot into the 5 door Thar. A 360 degree camera may also be in store, a highly useful feature when offroading.

Premium pricing almost equal to the Scorpio is for certain considering the feature.list and positioning.

M&M may launch at a later point, a lower powered RWD variant at cheaper price, and aftermarket operators will definitely fit side-facing seats in the trunk, taking back share in the old Bolero style people mover category.

re: Field trials of the 4-door Mahindra Thar begin!

This is a much better 4wd product compared to Scorpio N whose 4wd is of limited use due to inadequate ground clearance and poor approach/departure angles. This addresses the biggest issue of 3 door Thar that it cannot be the only vehicle in the family. It will be fun, capable offroader, safe, comfortable with modern features. Looking at the gizmos thrown in, expect little difference in pricing of top model compared to xuv700. Glad I cancelled my Scorpio N.

Keep in mind though that the Scorpio N is intentionally designed that way for better stability at higher speeds that is needed for a long distance tourer while also having competent 4x4 capabilities. Also the cabin width of the ScorpioN at a humongous 1917 mm (good for three adults at the rear seat) will be more than the width of Thar 5 door cabin.

The Thar 5 door though a more capable offroader will never be able to match the effortless highway mile munching, higher comfort and relative stability levels of the ScorpioN simply because of the Thar's higher ground clearance and larger wheels.

Scorpio-N was supposed to be the ultimate combo - 4WD plus space and comfort. It's like a mix of Thar and XUV700, sort of in between.
The 5-Door Thar looks sleek and ready to pull in a bunch of buyers with both 4WD and RWD options coming up. The only bummer is Mahindra's backlog, but hey, they've got plenty of time to fine-tune this ride with extra features and smooth out any kinks.
