I am ready to write a cheque any second this hits the market. In fact, I checked with my buddies at some dealerships in Bangalore if I can pay the “token” advance. I am so much in love with this silhouette.. I wouldn’t wait for anything to book this!!
Same here ! I can't wait for this one to arrive , would happily change my XUV700 AX5 booking to 5 door Thar. Wonder what name would M&M give to this new looker. Also, it should have Prathap Bose effects on its design !

re: Field trials of the 4-door Mahindra Thar begin!

Saw the entire video and it seems Mahindra has taken feedback from the audience.

Grab handles
Rood liner
Armrest at the front
More boot space
I see the suspension setup a bit different, this maybe more pliant that the 3 Door.

I was expecting for a bigger rear seat. It seems the same to me but with a slight bigger dimensions. Do not seems like it can hold 3 people. This is by far the most detailed video we have seen so far.

Very interesting. Especially the rear suspension. It seems the shockers are places similar to the ScorpioN. I just hope it gets a similar suspension setup with the FSD shockers.
This has the potential to become a very very big hit from mahindra. This definitely clicks all the right buttons.

Beat me to posting it.
Our own BHPians vivekji05 and JayD's scoop!!!

Key observations they made.

1. Looks more proportionate in real life.
2. Front armrest console.
3. Proper headliner and steel top. No roll bars or cross bars to take away headroom.
4. Rear seats seem to be plucked straight from the 3 door Thar. Expect a proper bench seat in production version. No chance at all for front facing 3rd rows.
5. Tailgate opens the same as 3 door Thar. No single piece.
6. Bootspace is pretty good, looking by the 20ltr jerry cans placed in it.
7. No rear disc brakes.
8. Provision for the A pillar mounted grab handles this time.
9. Underbody seems interesting. Exposed wires and bits below the fuel tank. @Vivekji05 shared an anecdote of him having a Scorpio vlx for test drive. One day it wouldn't start and he found out that his puppy had bit off wires below the body. Upon checking he found out that all the wires were being routed below the underbody, exposed. Following his feedback to the engineers, he was pleasantly surprised when in the subsequent facelift they routed all the wires inside the car, below the carpeting (which they should have done in the first place)
10. 3 door Thar is rumoured to be getting a 2wd version soon.

One thing they should have offered is rear disc brakes , perhaps some engineering firm should offer a kit for the conversion.

AC vents are same. Mahindra should have listened to smaller things. These will break on day 1.

They won't. I am using Thar, Jan 2022 manufactured and the AC vents are a lot better than the previous gen. One thing I really expect is a button for engaging rear locker or if Mahindra is too ambitious and also gives us front locker.

re: Field trials of the 4-door Mahindra Thar begin!

From the pics, the 5-door Thar does not look too long compared to the 3-door. But yes, more proportional. Hope they take care of the recently reported security aspect in this.

Any idea what's the actual length ? 4.3m ?

Disadvantage for the 5d Thar on Tax?

GST council defines criteria for highest 22% cess on SUVs.

Quote:
it was announced that the higher rate of compensation cess of compensation cess of 22% is applicable to "motor vehicle fulfilling all four conditions, namely, it is popularly known as SUV, has engine capacity exceeding 1,500cc, length exceeding 4,000mm and a ground clearance of 170mm or above".
The car industry is currently taxed at a GST rate of 28%, over and above which there is a cess for various kind of vehicle categories, including the SUVs.

Why?

"Currently cars with engine capacity exceeding 1500 cc, length exceeding 4000 mm and having ground clearance of 170 mm attract a GST of 28% and a 22% cess."

I don't think, Thar or any similar models have engines lower than 1500cc.

Might help Jimmy when launched in India if its under 4000mm. This new ruling is nothing, just a clarification on the definition of SUV.

The council, composed of state finance ministers and chaired by the Union Finance Minister, decided that all the criteria including engine capacity, length and ground clearance has to met for a vehicle to be classified as a SUV.

"If cars do not meet any of these criteria, lower cess rate will be applicable," said Vivek Johri, Chairman of Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Custom

* Since there is no Soft Top version in the 5 door and no fuel pilferage concerns, hope they provide remote fuel lid opening.

* Rear disc brakes are much needed for such a heavy vehicle with a lot of momentum.
Also the 5 door will be more practical as a touring vehicle and more frequently subjected to highway speeds, this warrants rear disk brakes as a safety requirement for more sure-footed stopping power.
Hope they are provided in the production version.

Other asks for a better experience:
- Better driver footwell space (not easy to implement),
- Bigger glove box, adjustable headrest for the 2nd row middle occupant,
- Better factory fitted headlamps (as an official accessory/addon atleast),
- Slightly lower side steps as an option (easier ingress, the current 3 door side steps is mountain high for the elderly)
