You're observations are spot on, Samba.
This is how a slick & savvy product & marketing team in touch with ground realities operate.
No one will question M&M for offering a plethora of 2WD variants at lower prices & rounding off the list by adding just a couple of 4x4 variants,(whose price I'm sure will be close to INR 1.7- 2.0 million, if not more). Public memory is remarkably short. They'll look at starting prices, equate that with the "size" of the car, add the "Thar" imagery & eulogise M&M. For those who need 4x4, they'll happily pay INR 2-million plus to Mahindra & get it.
I foresee the competition between Thar & Jimny will become even more intense with the launch of the 5-door Thar & that the Thar ROXX will walk all over the Jimny.
Had MUL priced the Jimny between 9-12 lakhs ex-showroom, added a base LX variant, resurrected the Gypsy nameplate and sold it, it would've done wonders.
Now it is too late for MUL. Even if they launch 2WD variants, add base variants: chances are feeble that it will resuscitate the Jimny from its present situation.
Amen!

Interestingly the panoramic sunroof starts after skipping considerable space in the front, almost missing a good portion over the front seats.

There is an alloy spare wheel too which others do not.

This is because the spare wheel of AX7L is an alloy and it is steel for every other variant. So all variants other than AX7L get a cover. 1.5L premium for AX7L is worth.

The price difference between AX5L and AX7L based on the prices released for the RWD trims is 1.5 lakhs. So, I would assume that the same price difference will be kept among the AWD variants too. The above are quite a lot of important feature and luxury value additions for 1.5 lakhs and I would personally choose the AX7L over the AX5L for this kind of premium.
Add to this R19 Alloys including Spare wheel and not to forget the Skyroof!!
At just 1.5L more AX7L is a no brainer unless one has a very restricted budget.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx is the official name of the 5-door Thar

For around 25 lakhs for the top end 4X4 6 Speed 170 bhp Diesel Torque Converter Automatic, I would pick this over the Creta/Seltos anyday.

If the ride quality and handling bits are sorted during a test drive for a customer, I see years of waiting list for this.

Mahindra has hit it out of the park with the pricing.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx is the official name of the 5-door Thar

They messed up the design big time. In an attempt to distinguish it from the wrangler, they failed miserably. this would be a big hit in the rural markets, but in tier-1 cities, the 3 door would do much better.

Being an odd-man-out, I feel the premium between Roxx and Thar 3D to be more (yet again prices are not disclosed for all the variants).

Yeah, I never considered the Scorpio or XUV700 because their petrol versions were 2WD, now if Thar also turns 2WD for petrol, it just means a XUV700 Diesel would do better than Thar in tricky situations! what's the use of all the enhancements in Thar, if it can't be 4WD in NCR (singularly, the biggest car market?). 10 year rule and then the banning of Diesels on smog days, makes it sad for NCR. (yes, currently BS6+ diesel is allowed all days, but soon when BS7 comes, BS6 diesel will be the first to be banned on smoggy days/ months).

Jimny might have just got its OSP (only selling point ) for NCR!

Was going to book a ROXX, now the game has changed.

If Thar is not marketed for its off-road abilities alone, here's how I see:
For ride, comfort and storage, XUV
For size and road presence Scorpio
For trying to make a statement in reasonable comfort, Thar!

Once scorpio catches up on all the electronic gizmos, we have a game.

Where did you see pano sunroof on Ax3L, or any mid variant for that matter? The way I see, panoramic sunroof is not available with any other variant apart from the absolute top end AX7L

And the assumption that SCR was designed to eliminate the need for forced REGEN is wrong.
Partially Agreed.

There are 2 types of regenetations. Passive regeneration and Active Regeneration.

PASSIVE REGENERATION
Here inside the EATS, the exhaust first passes over the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), then passes through the particulate filter, which traps soot particles. Passive regeneration happens when heat in the engine builds to the point where soot, or carbon, is combined with oxygen to create carbon dioxide. Since carbon dioxide is a gas, it can pass through the filter. Ash, on the other hand, is already a byproduct of combustion, so no amount of heat from the engine can convert it. Over a period of time, the ash will build up.

Passive regeneration occurs as the vehicle is driven normally under load when the driver is not even aware that it is happening. It may not always keep the DPF clean over the course of driving, so the filter may have to undergo active regeneration.

Improvements to DPF have evolved over the period of time and the new generation DPFs especially in SCR dependent engines have a lifespan upto 8 Lakh Kms.

ACTIVE REGENERATION
Here the engine needs to take action. Once the soot level reaches a certain point, by running the engine at higher r.p.m ensuring rich air-fuel mixture is injected into the exhaust stream, which goes over the oxidation catalyst and oxidizes the fuel to create heat. The heat created from the fuel oxidizing is then used to convert soot to carbon dioxide.

DPFs may fail sooner if they are not well maintained like using the wrong type of oil, performance modifications, using low-quality fuel or even running the car frequently on a low fuel level.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx is the official name of the 5-door Thar

I've gone through the brochure as well as a few videos but I couldn't find any mention of ground clearance (GC) numbers for Thar Roxx.
Do we know if Roxx's GC is in line with 226 mm on the Thar 3D?

Yes agreed. DPF clog can happen in both the SCR and LNT systems. It all depends on the type and kind of particualte filters used by the manufacturers.

Newly developed DPFs can last upto 8 Lakh Kms if maintained and used properly.

In our country we have a very peculiar problem of low quality fuel available that can damage the DPF.

Also, ignorance in using wrong type of oil, performance modifications, or even running the car frequently on a low fuel level can damage the DPFs sooner than expected.

Looking at these features list, MX3 also turns out to be a solid option. Alloy wheels, a Wrangler grill and some smart wrapping to cover the bump on the rear doors are all one needs after purchase. Aftermarket electric changes are no longer required and save customers from unnecessary hassles. No more chances of warranty expiry or electric short circuits.

Also looking at these features, I don't understand why lower variants of XUV7OO and Scorpio-N lose some of these features. Mahindra surely needs to work on upgrading both especially lower variants.

I was hoping Mahindra would showcase/reveal an updated 3-door Thar, but that didn't happen.

With a rising roofline to elevate headroom, space and width above the rear quarter glass and the rear window looks a little ungainly to me. Thar 3-door hardtop has a comparatively flatter roof and its rear window looks proportionate.
