Re: What are some undervalued cars in India?

Nissan Micra/Renault Pulse CVT with the 1.2L 3 Cyl Engine.

The engine was not smooth or silent which is the only negative, except that both these cars were very compact, good visibility, peppy for city speed limits, smooth CVT and loaded with all necessary features (Auto AC, Rear camera, Height adjustable driver seat, Alloy wheels, Steering mounter controls)

If someone is looking for a supplemental car for city usage, an used Micra/Pulse is an awesome find with a peppy engine, proper automatic transmission and it will be cheap (Around 4L for a sparingly used 4-5 years old car)

This will be a better choice than most of the AMTs sold in todays market.

Sorry, but that is probably one area where the 1.6 struggles. It's a highway car, it simply doesnt like inclines. Dont believe me? bring it to a stop on a steep incline, put it in 1st, and try going forward. Without proper handbrake use, progress will be very difficult. I guess it's a combination of gearing and lack of low-down torque. Similarly when descending, put it in 2nd gear and the revs climb really high, it feels like you're driving a 407. Slip it into 3rd, it simply hurtles forward like a catapult. I understood this the hard way. It is a great car, but it's meant for one purpose only; covering large highway distances at high speeds, while keeping occupants in relative comfort. Still there are a number of deficiencies - for eg. the lack of rear AC vents is unacceptable for a car in 2024. The headlights sucked. The switchgear is indistinguishable from a swift. The boot can barely hold 2 check-in baggages. The black interiors are durable, but has as much luxury quotient as an airport taxi. It is undervalued if you're an enthusiast and willing to compromise and invest in upgrades. As a family car there were/are much better alternatives.

My list is short:

1. Nissan Sunny aka Renault Scala
2. Tata Hexa (would have done wonders if it was a Toyota Hexa at the same price)

Re: What are some undervalued cars in India?

Speaking of the Linea, let’s not forget the great Hydraulic Power Steering. Gave awesome feedback. I wonder if any cars in the market today have a HPS instead of an EPS.

Re: What are some undervalued cars in India?

Ignis is one of the most value for money car in market today. Hence very much undervalued.
  • 4 cylinder 1.2L Suzuki Petrol engine
  • Superb manual transmission
  • Acceptable AMT automatic
  • Good space, ride, handling
  • Starting below 6L ex showroom. And discounts on top.

Misses:
  • Weird rear shape
  • 6 airbags and 5 star safety
  • Maruti interiors

Re: What are some undervalued cars in India?

The i10s of 2010/2011 were one heck of a deal back then. I wouldn't consider them undervalued, but neither were they overpriced. They offered great value for the money.
We bought the Sportz variant for 5L on road, and used it for nearly 12 years. It had 2 lakh kms on the odometer when we sold it in 2023. It never gave us any major problems in the 11 years we owned it. The peppy 1.2-liter engine provided good acceleration in the 3k-5k rpm range.
Despite having scratches and bumps (no issues with the engine or any functional parts whatsoever), we sold the car for 1.5L. We got a great deal on it

I completely agree with these points.
While for other points you mentioned, I respect your opinion of the car.

May be I should have mentioned this , I drive the 1.3 litre. Also, I am not an enthusiast, so I may not be able to discern on the drawbacks like an enthusiast would.

I shared my opinion of how good the car is from my perspective.
Thank you

3) Pre-owned German luxury cars seem undervalued. But you have to contend with high maintenance costs and iffy reliability. So if it is priced low compared to new, there is a reason behind it. The prices are hence 'fair'.

4) Pre-owned mainstream cars are reasonably priced. Not undervalued. The gap between new and pre-owned car is just right.

According to me, there are only a handful of undervalued cars:

- Has to be pre-owned.
- Older than 5 years (preferably 10 years)
- Because of the above, reliability is key. So has to be either Toyota or Honda
- Has to be expensive when new (Eg: Rs. 30L or Rs. 35L on road price), so that it is feature packed & still feels luxurious.
- Powered by a large petrol engine (so that resale value is low)

With these filters, we are left with cars like Honda Accord, Honda CRV & Toyota Camry, all pre-owned. You basically get Rs. 30L/35L car (on road price when new) for Rs. 5L to Rs. 10L. In my opinion, these are true undervalued cars. After all, it still maintains 80% to 90% functionality of a new car at 20% to 30% of its original on road price.
Compare them to their feature rich western counterparts and suddenly everything feels overpriced here in India. Would agree to your second and third point.
However one should remember, while looking at your fourth point, modern engines are much more efficient while churning out significantly more power. This while legislayure has mandated many a features that were not present in all but higher variants of cars you named.
We were drooling over 150bhp the vRS version of first gen Octavia put out. Ditto for Chevy Cruze. Today, 1.5 TSI Slavia returns 15-19kmpl in mixed driving while churning out same power, more torque at a price that should be half of the former when adjusted for inflation. Compare a 3 year old Slavia with 115 year old Accords and Camry and you d know what i wish to say.
Add to it, latest infotainment systems and one would not call the old cars undervalued so liberally.

Re: What are some undervalued cars in India?

With BS6, it's so difficult to pick a car and say that it's undervalued and in production in India. Most cars currently sold under 15L except two or three odd cars are not even remotely enthusiast friendly.

I think right now Mahindra XUV300/Slavia 1.0 TSI might be a good pick. Before this it was undoubtedly S-Cross that stole the show for the value offered in budget segment.

Re: What are some undervalued cars in India?

Original Ford Figo was such a package, specially the diesel one. I bought Titanium model with company fitted alloys @ 5.90 lakhs onroad Delhi. Best driving dynamics under 20 lakhs at that time and spares were damn cheap, it was totally fill it, shut it, forget it type car from Ford India. These days that kind of package is not available in India even at 4 times higher money. It was a true undervalued car i came across.

Re: What are some undervalued cars in India?

I would select any Fiat Abarth which were to be launched in India because they were highly undervalued back in the day. Although they did fail in the aftersales network, which was really sad thing. The Abarth Punto, caught very few customers but we know many, who still have a smile on their face! With a huge mod potential the Abarth Punto made more power figures (145HP & 212 Nm torque) in it's stock format which still are more than the ones generated by the current performance hatchbacks present in the market!

Only once I got the glimpse of Abarth 500!! Wish it got some recognition in Indian market.

Re: What are some undervalued cars in India?

Phased out but undervalued cars:

1. Palio 1.6
2. Abarth Punto
3. JTP Twins
4. S-Cross 1.6
5. Marazzo
6. Fiesta S edition and facelifts

As for those currently on sale, XUV 300 (or 3X0) and the Citroen C3, both in its NA and Turbo avatars. Both these cars are never the first picks in their respective segments. The C3 has this whole "el-cheapo" tag associated with it that dissuades people from their (exists only on paper or inside Jeep setup) showrooms. And for the 300, it's almost always a Nexon or Sonet that's right there for the taking.

Re: What are some undervalued cars in India?

Toyota Yaris was an undervalued car when it was available. It has segment first 7 airbags and proper seatbelts, head rests for all passengers and a good safety rating. It had a reliable engine and excellent CVT. However it was priced higher and had a few features missing. I think it was ahead of it's time.

Re: What are some undervalued cars in India?

I fully agree with @SmartCat here.
There's no undervalued cars, only VFM or good at business and milking customers from point x where it was good value till end of time, looking at you there Toyota.
Some primacy bias added in, I would say introductory pricing for models that became breakout hits and paved way for multiple generations of success can seem undervalued in hind sight.
1. Qualis/Innova when they launched.
2. XUV500. I would categorize XUV700 here too (ask me in 5 years when the current prices are bound to feel VFM)
3. Duster
Other notable mentions
Skoda/VW offerings which are 80% Audi for 50% price (Tiguan,Kodiaq,Superb,Octavia)

Last but least, my favorites from our own Mahindra and Tata which routinely feature in the "should've sold more" lists
Nano, Marazzo and Hexa.
