A decade ago, I used to get every Topgear magazine and watched BMW, Audi, and Mercedes release there classic looking models There came a time when the car looks started to get sharp and it became really fascinating.
I remember the C class, E class, The 5 series, the M3 in and around 2014, butch and sharp looking.
Now in 2024, With time, the new designs have lost the charm and appeal. Yes, with time the new design language may seem better. But that first awestruck by design moment isn’t there anymore.
The new BMW 5 series looks Chinese made by design. I agree with one of the members stating it like “ a Kia trying too hard”
The numbers shall dictate how much the car is actually liked by the market.

My observation: from bonnet to boot the design flow is like a person who took a gym membership, spent an year with proper dedication, and then left the gym after taking the gold membership on Zomato ( A- pillar onwards). Chiseled before the A-pillar, bulbous after that.

It looks like a mix between a kia, BMW, and a gen 1 panamera. In short, disproportionate and comical.

I attended the pre launch of the 5 series LWB in Mumbai earlier this evening.

Only petrol version will be launched initially with a 48V mild hybrid. Unofficial figures for the 2.0L petrol engines is the same as earlier 252 HP and 350 NM and the mild hybrid adding 12 HP and 25 NM torque.

Dealer will stock 19" tyres and the owners can opt to upgrade, the 19" rims will come with 245/50/R19 Pirelli tyres initially.

The initial 18" tyres will be Pirelli and later BMW will potentially switch to Vredestein tyres (localisation).

If we are indeed getting this exact tune, we will get 295 LbFt, which translates to 400 NM Torque. The 330i always had this level of torque, but the 530i was tuned down to 350NM in the previous generation. Hopefully we get the full 400NM Tune plus the mild hybrid boost, which should then make this car much more eager in the city driving conditions.

The new BMW 5 Series LWB 530 Li M Sport prices start at ₹72.90 lakh (ex-showroom, India).

Only 2.0 litre Petrol engine option.

Deliveries will begin from September.

India is the first market to get this right hand drive LWB version.

First 500 customers will get customised head rests.

Interesting, so the new LWB 5 series is undercutting the Mercedes E200 by a good 3 lacs. So far the car hasn’t been able to excite me with the pictures I have seen, I would really want to see one in real life in black colour along with blacked out grill.

To be honest, very impressive pricing. Being able to undercut Mercedes E class with a new gen update is very attractive. Despite polarising looks, interiors will definitely pull some back seat customers.

Interestingly 530Li and M340i have exact same price, one for the enthusiast another for the back seat comfort.

I'll be honest, I had imagined this to touch north of 90 on-road with the new generation. Brilliant pricing by BMW, hopefully they maintain these prices. I remember the G30 incrementing its prices quite aggressively continuously every January.
As with all current BMW, it will grow on you. I for one, don't even find it that revolting anymore. Coupled with the fact that this is the only executive sedan you'll actually enjoy driving, I think the choice is pretty clear. Lets see how the new E drives. The previous generation was a boat.

This should never have been the pricing scenario. By making the 3 series longer and more expensive, they have made the 5 series lose its value. The 5 has always been a longer, better and more premium car. BMW is the only one out of the three German brands to do it first. I can see Audi doing it next, by launching the new A5 and taking out the A4. The void remains now that we're so used to these models.

Well priced I feel. Will definitely draw in the wealthy weekend owner driver but may cannibalize the 330Li to some extent. Maybe the looks will grow on people

Never expected BMW to launch 530Li at ₹73L. My guess was ₹75L and above. It is undercutting the current gen E-Class by a good ₹3.15L.

Let's see how Mercedes-Benz prices the next-gen E-Class.
