I loved reading your analysis, PQR Ji! However, not to undermine anything in this analysis and the thread, just to add to it: I'm a little surprised that no one mentioned another challenge Tata Motors will have to face regarding their total dependence on the 2.0 Litre Fiat Multijet engine it uses in its Harrier and Safari cars. There's a possibility that Fiat may discontinue this engine due to supply chain issues onward into the future, as mentioned by Hormazd ji at around the 19:36 timestamp of the video below. Of course, I acknowledge that this is a heavy dose of speculation.

In my opinion, Tata should really not have discontinued their 2.2 Litre Varicor engine, unless there was some genuine engineering-related reason which prevented them from continuing with this engine by making it impractical in likely the emissions aspect, other than this reason mentioned by DRPSREDDY ji (Rumour: Tata Motors developing BS6 2.2-litre diesel engine) about the engine only being able to be mounted in a longitudinal orientation. Side note: I personally really miss the Hexa and the Safari Storme, which is partly why I mentioned the 2.2 Litre Varicor engine.

That's not the case, 2.2 diesel unit is still on sale today in BS6.2 with a longitudinal config on Tata Yodha 2.2 100ps 250NM and transverse config on Tata Winger 2.2 100ps 200NM for commercial purposes.

Re: Mahindra is now entering the race for the #2 position | Slowly closing the gap to Hyundai & Tata

Mahindra Zoom past Tata Motors in Sept sales. EV sees the lowest figures in 19 months.

With Thar ROXX figures to come in October, Mahindra will consolidate its running for the Nr. 2 slot, while TATA has a lot of catching up to do which is a huge task as nothing new/exciting is in the offing.

Mahindra: 51,062

Tata Motors: 41 313

Mahindra has closed on the heels of Hyundai. With right mix of products and the growth trajectory, it would be a cakewalk next month for Mahindra to claim no.2

Re: Mahindra is now entering the race for the #2 position | Slowly closing the gap to Hyundai & Tata

No doubt this is a great feat by Mahindra. Hyundai needs to be worried about the two Indian OEMs. They have a good upcoming product line up, plethora of power train options including EVs, market polarizing niche products.

It is Creta which majorly floats the boat for Hyundai accounting for 35 - 40% of dispatch share. As the competition in the C2 segment increases, the market share will get diluted.

Re: Mahindra is now entering the race for the #2 position | Slowly closing the gap to Hyundai & Tata

Hyundai has just kept Mahindra at bay for 2nd month in a row. Since the IPO is done, I don't think Hyundai will be no 2 next month, especially if you look at the YoY growth. Hyundai has been more or less flat in the past few months while Mahindra has been 25%. Since Thar Roxx deliveries has started and it will be first full month this time, there is more than an even chance for Mahindra to go past Hyundai next month.

Mahindra's drop in sales leaves the company at Nr. 4, behind Tata motors in Nov sales. Now, all eyes are on the market response to Mahindra's BE vehicles.

So we should take the October and November overtake with a pinch of salt as the Vahan sales data for both the months was higher for TATA than Mahindra. Tata Motors decreased the dispatches to release stock holding pressures for their dealerships thereby getting the inventory to less than 30 days. Mahindra on the other hand has maintained the same level of stockpile in their showrooms with increase dispatches. That still maintained an average of 60 days of inventory.
