Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month | Buying a used Mahindra Thar (2nd-gen)

Voted no. I owned a 21 Thar D AT for 2 years and sold it off due to too many niggles. 23 onwards the Thar has far fewer niggles, much better suspension. Most Thar owners have bought the car for fun, hard to figure out if its been used roughly or not.

The unknown abuse coupled with mahindra's niggles make it a risky bet as a used vehicle.

GTO has already mentioned all the points I could think of.
Plus a new car has a totally different feel, I am in the market for a proper SUV and can foresee one in my garage in next 12 months but it will be a brand new vehicle.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month | Buying a used Mahindra Thar (2nd-gen)

Voted a No. I don’t believe in buying a preowned car unless the price is half or thereabouts or less of its price when new. Even though many Thars are available preowned, I finally got one new RWD AT petrol in Jan 24’.
Buying a German preowned makes sense as the prices are low low, but the Thar, no.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month | Buying a used Mahindra Thar (2nd-gen)

Voted No, as I just sold mine and I know how much abuse that car has gone through regardless of it being cared for/maintained. Also asking prices seem insane to the point which I'd just add another few lakhs to get brand new.

Apart from the ride, this car has a huge image problem in North india, somewhat of a cross between a white fortuner and an Omni van. While helpful, its something I cannot bring myself to associate with.
Which is why I am fishing around for a 2018 model. Way more likeable.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month | Buying a used Mahindra Thar (2nd-gen)

Great Thread!

Voted No. Reason in addition to all the ones mentioned already is, the abuse that the Thars take both on and off road by the enthusiastic (or non enthusiastic/ noobs) first owners. i have personally seen many stupid things being done to Thar. Though the car is built to take abuses, there is a tolerance to everything and the second owner will become a victim.

Pay the few lakhs more and get the new Thar home.

I won't lie. I had toyed with the idea of buying a preowned Thar before I bought mine.

Then I realised it just didn't make sense. If I had bitten the bullet, I would get one from the early builds. Plus people who were selling were asking for a premium just because new ones had a long waiting period. How they must be abused would be another area of concern.

In the end, just decided to wait it out more and get home a brand new one. Totally happy with my decision.

Don't get me wrong. I am besotted with the Thar and have nothing against buying good 2nd hand vehicles. But my reservation in case of the Thar has been the prohibitively high quotes on online ad forums. Some of the quotes have been very Fortuner-esque in optimism and it feels better to pump in a few more lakhs and get the new one.
But then, why spend 20 big ones on an occasional indulgence. So the cycle goes 😄

1. Thars don’t depreciate much
2. Don’t know why but many of the Thar owner (atleast the ones in my circle) subject their vehicle to abuse, be it flying over potholes or speedbreakers or trying off-road without skills, I know it’s an offroader but still its a machine at the end of the day. Until & unless I know the owner and vehicle well, I wouldn’t touch it even with a barge.

- I am actually a fence sitter, somehow tolerating the itch to walk into the MM showroom. Happy to buy a new 2024 Thar, but would be even more happier to buy if MM do a facelift in sync with the launch of the 5-door variant.
- used Thars offered are neither cheap nor properly been modified or maintained, at least in my state. Worshipped Thars are not (probably never) for sale.
- points as stated by GTO.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month | Buying a used Mahindra Thar (2nd-gen)

Voted 'Yes'.

The 2nd gen Thar is a very capable machine and is a lot more multi-dimensional than the older Thar. The drivetrain has some of the best hardware in the business and Thars from a couple of years ago came with the locking differentials as standard. Today, these are options only available on the diesel 4x4 version.

Furthermore, the costs saved on a used Thar that isn't very old means you still have an intact warranty for the most part, and save some money by way of buying used for a relatively new car. The used market is flooded with almost all versions of the new Thar and hence, finding one with your choice of colour, roof and powertrain option shouldn't be too difficult. This also translates to lower prices.

As a lifestyle vehicle which happens to be tough as nails, this is an absolute winner for me.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month | Buying a used Mahindra Thar (2nd-gen)

I predict that it's going to be a close poll.

For me personally, while the Thar appeals to me a macho car that can go anywhere, the practicality takes a major hit.

I need a commuter car with minimal niggles that can handle most roads and most traffic conditions and most parking lots with ease, and is also reliable and easy on the pocket to maintain.

And I cannot afford a secondary car for myself right now, so I need all of it in a single car. I suppose many car buyers would resonate with this.

The Thar does not offer this, for me. I could probably feel good about it for a few weeks, and it would stay in my garage for a few months and then inevitably move back to Spinny's garages.

And even if I had the free cash lying around, and the will and the parking space to get a secondary lifestyle car, the cynic in me is going to be highly suspicious about a used Thar. High enough to veto it.

Thar will become the most used vehicle in your Garage, it may not have the most miles but it will be the most frequently used.

For running errands you do not need more than 2 seats most of the time, so Thar`s compact size and ease of use will make it a daily runner. This is the case with many multi car garages, shopping, Gym, school run, office , you name it.

Re: Pre-worshipped car of the month | Buying a used Mahindra Thar (2nd-gen)

Voted No.

Reasons

1. I am an extensive highway user

2. I don't have a need to offroad

3. I like comfortable suspension set ups

4 Used thars are rarely unabused.

I already have a vehicle with the same drivetrain, which can do 70% of Thar's off-road capabilities while being far more comfortable as a daily driver.

If I had the spare funds for a used Thar, I'd probably plonk it down on a dirty little F30 320d Luxury Line.
