Mahindra exploring hybrid technology for its future products

Mahindra has announced that it is exploring hybrid technology for its future products. However, the carmaker has clarified that it will only start developing hybrid models if there’s sufficient demand.

While speaking with the media, Anish Shah, Group CEO of Mahindra Group, stated that while the company is looking at hybrid technology closely, its focus remains on EVs.

Shah said, “From a consumer demand standpoint, if they (hybrids) become a bigger factor, we would be ready for that. We view hybrids as an extension of ICE.” He went on to add, “If there are significant changes in hybrid technology, that make it much more like an EV, then that's something we would go with much faster. At this point in time, we feel good about the focus on EVs, we are ready for hybrids, and are looking at hybrid technologies closely.”

Mahindra will invest Rs 12,000 crore into its EV business over the next 3 years. The carmaker plans to launch 16 new SUVs in India by 2030, including seven EVs.

Good. This is how one must approach the matter.

Not be a cry baby and complain like some others. (Well, can't blame them. Not even able to properly develop engines now, let alone hybrids)

Kudos to Mahindra for being open to hybrids. Remember them developing a diesel hybrid Scorpio concept in the late 2000s, (with a tailgate mounted spare tyre). Wonder what came out of that.

Tah-Tah! even the Fiat engine is showing its age... sounds like a tractor compare to others.

Re: Mahindra exploring hybrid technology for its future products

yes, this is the need of the hour specially for Mahindra. EV infra will take a lot more time to get mature and become main stream, it will require a decade long transition driven by Hybrids

They are into larger dimension heavier vehicles, and the petrol without hybrid for their vehicles is not viable (<10 KMPL), and with norms getting stricter they also have to figure out efficient diesels (Diesel + Hybrid what toyota is exploring)

Re: Mahindra exploring hybrid technology for its future products

A very sensible decision by Mahindra IMHO. The market will slowly gravitate towards hybrids in the future and the EV revolution in India still requires significant infrastructure upgrades from charging point of view.

But rather than wait for the demand to be created, I think it would be a good strategy to introduce hybrids as it would help them to sell more XUV 700 and ScorpioN petrols. It would be a good strategy. They shouldn't wait for demand here, only when it is introduced it would create an interest.

Re: Mahindra exploring hybrid technology for its future products

Mahindra must be thinking twice about even thinking of hybrids looking at the direction of Grand Vitara numbers (ignoring the fact only a small fraction of them are proper Hybrids in the first place)!

Grand Vitara
Jan'24: 13,438
Feb'24: 11,002
Mar'24: 11,232
Apr'24: 7,651

Creta
Jan'24: 13,212
Feb'24: 15,276
Mar'24: 16,458
Apr'24: 15,447

I'm sure Maruti is fighting back and as per Autocar the Grand Vitara hybrid can be had with benefits of up to Rs 74,000 currently. This includes Rs 20,000 cash discount, a 3-year extended warranty, Rs 50,000 exchange bonus and corporate offers of up to Rs 4,000. Rest assured the discounts will continue to grow.

What will be even more interesting is to see Creta's numbers once the EV variant is launched, and probably increase the gap even further vis a vis the Grand Vitara (Petrol + Hybrids combined).

For a video whose title itself confuses Sales slowing and and sales growth slowing, I wonder what to takeaway from such a video.

Clearly, either someone has been bunking math classes and doesn’t know how to calculate the slope of a curve, or they have been deliberately mixing up terminology of sales and sales growth to give a false image.

After all, repeating a lie enough times makes it the truth. Imagine someone daily being hit with the news pieces that he mentions in the video, at some point, one is bound to wonder if it is indeed true and they should defer or completely cancel that EV Pre order they made on the config page.

His content is often poorly researched just history tab of the Wikipedia page of cars he talks about. For actual research videos you already saw how the reality is vs what he presents.

What’s worse is that the audience doesn’t know any better and laps it up. Unlike western audience which calls out their YouTubers for wrong info, we don’t because we don’t know any better :
