Hyundai India to launch hybrid cars, SUVs by 2027

Following the leader Maruti Suzuki, now more manufacturers commit to hybrids.

Hyundai executive chairman Euisun Chung told employees hybrid vehicles will be a critical part of the brand’s future strategy in addition to its EV plans.

Quote:
Hyundai midsize SUVs, sedan likely to receive hybrid tech
Makes sense to use hybrid tech with diesel engines to meet emission norms
Maruti has already begun development of hybrids for India
Hyundai is likely to bring in hybrid powertrain alternatives to its midsize SUVs and sedan in the future. It may go into vehicles like the Creta, Alcazar, Verna, and even the larger Tucson SUV in the coming decade.

Kia has already committed to bringing in hybrid vehicles in India, but Hyundai was non-committal on bringing in that technology, with the investment being prioritised on pure battery electric vehicles.
Quote:
While the company has stuck with diesel engines post BS6 Phase II, post 2027, the cost to meet future emission norms for diesel will make it even more expensive and hence, it makes sense to look at hybrid technology for midsize vehicles to remain competitive

Re: Hyundai India to launch hybrid cars, SUVs by 2027

This is good news. Although I have to admit the BEVs with zero tail pipe emissions are really nice, especially in dense cities, hybrids offer some of the benefits of BEVs while still keeping the option of quick refueling. The Asian manufacturers are yet to believe on the BEV supremacy and are constantly on the search for alternative methods of propulsion. Here is an article which discuss the approach to get fuel cells working for commercial and passenger vehicles : https://www.techradar.com/vehicle-te...hing-heres-why.

I think the Asian manufacturers are hell bent on not riding the BEV bandwagon, but does so just to keep a few markets and governments happy. I am not sure if it is just the Big Oil or just perceived reliability in not being stranded in some place and the ability to quickly get going when out of juice.

Re: Hyundai India to launch hybrid cars, SUVs by 2027

Hyundai Motor Group plans hybrid cars for India in strategy shift.

- Is evaluating a hybrid sport-utility vehicle of size similar to its top-selling, mid-sized Creta SUV in India.

- EV plans for India were also on track for a 2026/27 launch.

- Committed to a future of electrified mobility and will optimize product strategies for each market.

-Hyundai sees a surge in sales of the technology(hybrid) in India, prompting it to shift away from an initial strategy that focused only on battery-driven electric vehicles.

-Building EVs in India would have obvious long-run strategic value for Hyundai and Kia but the underdeveloped EV manufacturing and charging infrastructure remain a challenge

-Until EV sales pick up pace, Hyundai "wants to get dibs on India's hybrid market"

- Hyundai has now begun work on tailoring Hybrid technology for cars in India to make it mainstream

- Toyota had 78% share of India's hybrid market in 2023, market leader Maruti Suzuki had 20% and Honda Motor opens new tab the remaining 2%,

- Hybrid models accounted for about 2% of India's total car sales of 4.1 million in 2023. The share of EVs was just above 2%.

-Hyundai's hybrids will allow it to better compete with rival Maruti Suzuki which sells such models in partnership with Toyota and plans more affordable launches with technology from parent Suzuki Motor.

Hyundai developing series hybrid tech for future models.

Hyundai's series hybrid tech will enter production in 2026; first model set to be launched internationally in 2027.

Quote:
The EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle) is being developed under the Hyundai Dynamic Capabilities strategy, and will combine internal combustion engines along with electric motor(s).

Hyundai's EREV to offer 900km range on a full charge
Plans to have 21 EV models in its line-up by 2030
The tech will primarily be aimed at the North American and Chinese markets. The company says that the system will also enable four-wheel-drive with the application of two electric motors.

The hybrid tech will also help the company address the slowing demand of EVs.

IMO they are a bit late to the party. They should have followed Toyota and introduced a hybrid in the new gen Creta or Verna.

Doesn't matter IMO. The day they introduce a hybrid Creta with 30 kmpl mileage, it will be instant bestseller, but possibly at cost of their Turbo-petrol and diesel sales.

Re: Hyundai India to launch hybrid cars, SUVs by 2027

Hyundai to play catch up game with strong hybrid market in India as demand soars. Coming in 2027.

New Hyundai hybrid SUV to roll out from Talegaon plant. New Ni1i SUV will sit below the Tucson; will come with petrol-hybrid powertrain.

Quote:
Hyundai Motor India has begun work on an all-new SUV that is slated to hit the roads in 24-30 months from the company’s newly acquired General Motors' Talegaon facility. Internally codenamed Ni1i, this new SUV will sit above the Alcazar in the Korean brand’s portfolio.

This SUV will be Hyundai's first hybrid for India. The Korean brand will likely introduce its strong hybrid alternative in about two years and challenge Japanese rivals Maruti Suzuki and Toyota Kirloskar, which have received a good response from the market. Sales of petrol-hybrid SUVs are gaining popularity in India and with the all-new model, Hyundai aims to catch up on this trend.
Quote:
will be targeted as a spacious three-row offering, which will be squarely aimed at the XUV700 and the Safari. This new SUV will be slightly longer than the Tucson, which is 4630mm in length. Sources tell us that this new SUV could use Tucson LWB sold in China as a base which is 4680mm long, which will liberate generous amount of cabin space, especially for the third row. In comparison, the XUV700 is 4695 mm long and the Tata Safari is 4668 mm in length and both offer much better space in the third row when compared to the Alcazar.

As mentioned above, Hyundai will kick off its petrol-hybrid innings in India with this SUV. Powertrain details are not available at the moment. In the international markets, the Tucson comes with a 1.6-litre petrol hybrid setup that is also shared with a few other Hyundai and Kia models. Hyundai could add the hybrid setup to its existing 1.5-litre NA petrol engine to keep costs in check.

Hyundai plans to produce about 50,000 units of this C segment SUV annually; the share of the hybrid powertrain has yet to be ascertained. This would mean the South Korean car maker will have almost half a dozen different powertrain options in India—petrol, diesel, CNG, ethanol, electric, and hybrid—by the end of this decade.
When launched, the model will challenge Maruti Suzuki’s upcoming C segment SUV, codenamed Y17, produced at the Japanese car maker's Kharkhoda facility. It will also take on the segment leader, Mahindra’s XUV 700. This new SUV will be one of the first models to roll out from the newly acquired plant at Talegaon and the first units will be out by 2027. Hyundai will also build the next-gen Venue at the same plant, expected by next October.

A variety of hybrid powertrain options are in the works. JSW MG Motor India and BYD India are considering introducing plug-in hybrids. Market leader Maruti Suzuki aims to introduce the series hybrid, a more affordable solution in the compact car segment, in the coming years.

Maruti Suzuki has guided about 7.5 lakh hybrid vehicle sales by the end of FY31, accounting for almost a fourth of its total sales. The company expects the share of EVs to be lower at 15%

I wonder why Hyundai was protesting against a lower tax bracket for hybrids when they had this in the pipeline along with a hybrid 1.2 and 1.5 as mentioned in another thread.

Re: Hyundai India to launch hybrid cars, SUVs by 2027

Haven't seen the details of transmission. Is it similar to Honda's where the electric motor drives the wheels with engine acting only as generator except during higher speeds where its clutched in ?

The new 2025 Civic has 60lbft more torque and drives/feels better than the Si with this technology. Use torque of electric motor during start and use efficiency of engine at higher coasting speeds.

> Hyundai Motor Group's advanced next-generation hybrid system incorporates innovative electrification technologies to improve performance and fuel efficiency.
> The new transmission features two integrated engines and will be combined with multiple engines in a wide range of vehicles.
> The optimized design allows for seamless integration of the new P1 engine, increasing energy transfer efficiency for starting, battery power generation and driving performance.
> The 2.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine achieves up to a 2.9% increase in efficiency, with improvements including an optimised thermodynamic cycle and fuel injection strategies.
> The new state-of-the-art hybrid system offers 45% more fuel efficiency and 19% more power compared to ICE powertrains in the same class, providing enhanced refinement.
> It employs sophisticated electrification technologies and advanced motor and battery control to increase drivability and deliver a leading hybrid driving experience.
> The new next-generation 1.6 hybrid engine will also be available, offering customers a greater choice of options.
> The upgraded hybrid powertrains offer a power output range from the low region of 100 hp to mid-300 hp, initially debuting in the Hyundai Palisade 2.5 turbo hybrid

Focusing on the P1+P2 parallel structure and combustion engine improvements, fuel efficiency and power performance have been improved while smoother shifts and better powertrain refinement have been achieved.

By connecting the P1 engine directly to the engine, the system reduces starting time. The precise control of the load and driving force of the P1 and P2 engines ensures that the engine operates within a high-efficiency range, thus improving fuel consumption.

The 2.5-litre petrol turbo hybrid system used in the new Palisade offers maximum fuel efficiency of 14.1 km/l, maximum system output of 334 hp and maximum torque of 460 Nm, delivering approximately 45 per cent better fuel efficiency, 19 per cent more peak power and a nine per cent improvement in peak torque compared to a turbocharged petrol model of 2.5 liters. 1

The next-generation 1.6-liter gasoline turbo hybrid improves fuel efficiency by more than four percent in a midsize SUV compared to previous models, increasing the system's maximum torque rating from 367 Nm to 380 Nm and improving throttle response.

In addition, by incorporating the P1 engine into the hybrid transmission logic with Active Shift Control (ASC), the system achieves faster and smoother gear changes than before. Improved engine clutch control further reduces engine engagement time when switching from EV mode, improving comfort and performance. The P1 engine is also used to reduce vibration and thud of the engine during idling battery charging, thus enhancing interior refinement.

Hybrid lineup to expand from compact to large and luxury models:

The Group plans to combine the new hybrid transmission with various engines across a system output from the low-100 PS range to the mid-300 PS region, introducing a diverse lineup of hybrid vehicles from compact to large and luxury classes.

With this expanded system output coverage, the hybrid powertrain lineup will increase from three models to five, with the latest 2.5 turbo hybrid powertrain making its debut in the all-new PALISADE hybrid, which began mass production this month. This system will be applied to other Hyundai and Kia models in the future.

The Group plans to introduce a rear-wheel-drive 2.5 turbo hybrid system in 2026 and aims to gradually expand its hybrid technology to the Genesis luxury brand by applying this powertrain to key models over time.

For all future hybrid models, the Group plans to apply the newly unveiled hybrid system and further electrification-focused technologies, tailoring these to the characteristics of individual vehicles and classes, as well as regional market requirements.

Re: Hyundai India to launch hybrid cars, SUVs by 2027

Hybrids are the perfect middle ground between pure ICE and EV. They give excellent fuel economy and are perhaps the best of both worlds, with most disadvantages of EV taken care of. With more and more manufacturers, including Toyota, Suzuki, Kia, Hyundai, Honda and potentially others following suit, Hybrids could be a perfect stop-gap arrangement before EV technology evolves enough so that range anxiety is no longer a thing, even on budget cars, and fast charging gets as fast as fuel filling.

Moreover, Hybrids ensure that ICE vehicles continue to go on, albeit with different characteristics.

So, I believe there is a very low chance that Hyundai and Kia India's lower-powered cars will have these new hybrid systems?
