Re: Q1 2024 Surprise! Diesel car sales grew by 11%

Good to see people whose cars see a good amount of running making sensible choices.

Seeing all types of new technologies and consumers being used as beta testers, The Diesel is the best choice who want fuss-free ownership.

Q1 2024: Indian passenger vehicle market fuel-mix analysis.

- CNG passenger vehicle sales grew by 88% in Q1 2024, with a market share of 14.5%.

- Diesel passenger vehicle sales were stable at 17.3% of the Indian PV market, with 11% growth.

- Petrol vehicle sales growth was a mere 1%, with a market share loss of 6.7%.

Petrol:
Petrol vehicle sales growth was a mere 1%, with a market share loss of 6.7%. This is because in the lower price segment, CNG gained share due to a softening of CNG prices and wider offerings.
Maruti controls 50% of the petrol car market, with Maruti Baleno being the best seller. The average petrol car sales price was close to ₹ 9.8 lakh.

Diesel
The diesel segment is strongly dominated by SUVs and crossovers due to their large size and higher weight because diesel engines offer low running costs, uncompromised performance, and the practicality of long-distance cruisers.
Sales of bigger cars take the average car sales price to ₹ 18.3 lakhs. Mahindra is the undisputed leader with 54% of the diesel vehicle market due to its wide array of UV offerings, followed by Hyundai-Kia with a 24% share.
Even in the luxury segment, Mercedes and JLR have over 55% and 65% diesel mix, respectively, which is especially beneficial for their large SUVs. BMW, however, has seen a drop to 31% due to higher sales of its BEV product range.

CNG
:
With the introduction of multiple new products by Maruti, Hyundai and an innovative dual-tank solution by Tata, coupled with unhindered supply and softening of CNG prices - the CNG car segment grew by 88% in Q1 2024 to register a share of 14.5%.
CNG still caters to low-value product offerings, having an average sales price of ₹ 9.1 lakhs with a large contribution coming from fleet operators.
Maruti remains a dominant player with 70% of the CNG market share, and Maruti Ertiga was the best seller at 14% and the preferred choice among fleet operators.

BEV & HEV (Strong-hybrid): Data yet to be circulated.

Happy to see diesel performing in decent numbers.

I can't comprehend why Hyundai is not offering 1.5 diesel in Verna, when they already have the engine in other models. They are only not offering to promote the 1.5 turbo petrol. If they do bring it, it will be cheaper than Virtus/Slavia turbo petrols. I'm sure many current diesel sedan owners would go for it, including many in my family circle.

Point is - segment with higher weights of diesel share has grown and not the share of diesel within a segment.
You have hit the nail on the head, sir!

And for these heavy SUVs / MPVs, diesel only makes a lot of sense. Giving you an example of my Thar. On the highway, I get an average FE of 8 kmpl and have to visit the petrol pump every 300 km. On the other hand, the Thar diesel with excellent refinement levels & decent power delivery will visit the pump every 600 km (or higher). There is a 100% difference in cruising range!

EVs aren't going to be applicable to big SUVs & MPVs yet as they will be too heavy, and charging their massive batteries will take too long. Hybrids are a formidable competitor, as the Innova Hycross has shown. But other than Toyota, no other SUV / MUV player has invested in hybrid tech for India.

I wonder what our taxi operators are buying. Except Innova, most cars on that list are not taxi options. Without the Dzires, Xcents, Etios, etc, what are remaining options for a small taxi ? CNG is barely there in a few citiies, and there's no electric or other candidates too.

In the tier 1 cities they prefer CNG, tier 2/3 market is dominated by DZire / Wagon R petrol

I have seen this in Guwahati. Almost all are Dzire/WagonR/Alto petrol. Does petrol taxi makes economic sense?

Makes perfect sense when you pay them what they charge as taxi fares in the hills. I was in Sikkim last year and until then, I thought only Goa taxi was a exorbitant. Am not going into the why of those fares, just answering your question.

Re: Q1 2024 Surprise! Diesel car sales grew by 11%

Q1 2024: Hybrid & Electric Vehicle Sales Analysis:

- 29,387 BEVs and 28,438 HEVs were sold in Q1 2024.

- The market share of BEV and HEV was 2.6% and 2.5% of total PV sales, respectively.

- BEV sales growth was driven by a new product - Punch EV, introduced by Tata in Q1 2024.

- Tata and Toyota continue to dominate the BEV and strong-hybrid EV markets with 68% and 87%, respectively.

- Tata Punch EV was the best-selling BEV product, and Toyota Innova Hycross was the best-selling strong-hybrid EV.

- Sales growth for other BEV products was largely flat. surge momentarily seen due to Punch EV launch and Mahindra XUV400 before the FY 2023-24 closure to manage internal CAFE figures.

- HEV sales were largely driven by Toyota’s products selling on their own merit, as all current BEV products just attract a 5% incentivized GST rate, on the other hand, current HEV products are in the 43% GST slab.

-The average car sales price for BEVs is ₹ 14.1 lakhs, and for HEVs it is ₹ 25.6 lakh, with a sales gap of a mere 3%.

Perfectly said. For large and heavy SUVs diesel is the choice. For my Hector diesel, I visit the fuel station after driving 900+ kms and still left with a range of 300 kms. There is no point in getting a petrol SUV like XUV700 or Hector and later complaining about the abysmal mileage, unless the driving is very minimal.

Re: Q1 2024 Surprise! Diesel car sales grew by 11%

It has been almost 5 years since I chose GT TDI over the GT TSI, and every casual long drive cements my belief that this was the best choice

Planned an early morning spin last weekend to Bandipur that is around 200 Km from Bangalore. With all the speed cams that are now equipped with advanced AI technology, Bangalore-Mysore Expressway is strictly monitored 24/7. Without any choice I had to stick to the speed limit all through the run.

Cruise Control was set to 100 Km/hr for the most part and the Avg FE was:

Q1 2024 Surprise! Diesel car sales grew by 11%-plutomileage.jpg

It even crossed 25 Km/l at one point and I was a bit too excited to even click that.

P.S - My GT TDI is on Stage 2 with a claimed output of ~145 Bhp and ~370 NM torque!!

Re: Q1 2024 Surprise! Diesel car sales grew by 11%

This is amazing fuel efficiency, my vento TDI DSG which has crossed 1L km this year still consistently gives 15+kmpl in any driving condition let it be city or highway and on highway, it goes above 18+kmpl.
For highway cruising diesel would be my only choice, petrol or hybrid can’t simply match the drivability, torque delivery and efficiency of a diesel.
Hybrids are close to diesel when it comes to highway cruising but there are not many choices available the only competent hybrids that I consider good for highways are Hycross and Camry, but still, they can’t match diesel.
