Happy to see this figure, albeit barely 11%.

It’s a no-brainer for large sized SUV’s & MUV’s to opt for Diesel in the interest of superior FE; but sub 4m crossovers like Sonet, XUV300 showing a rise in the Diesel takers is a surprise!

I was under the impression that the overall figure for Diesels must have gone sub 10% by now. However, 17% is still quite low compared to the Petrol and the Hybrids which are catching up at rapid pace.

In my opinion at least a few of those must be buyers who would have otherwise bought a hatch, but had to switch because the diesel hatch segment is practically dead

I would pick a Diesel engine any day due to its low end torque, excellent fuel efficiency and driving pleasure. As rightly pointed out, people who wanted a diesel hatch had to shop a segment higher. Also, OEMs are constantly offering discounts to move their stocks and hence buyers are getting really good deals and no stress on waiting periods as well, barring the Creta to an extent, thus contributing to the growth.

Kinda telling that India's largest passenger car maker - Maruti - does not exist on this list. There's still a market for a good highway vehicle - and none of Maruti's offerings fit that bill. We really need powerful turbo-petrol hybrids, with diesel-like efficiency. The Hycross/Invicto are too big for our roads and way too expensive.

I never expected Hyundai diesels to outsell Toyota and Tata. Guess it's first time for everything.

I am also one of the satisfied owners of a Hyundai diesel hatchback.

Lovely to see Citroen contributing to the diesel sales after selling 1 C5 Aircross in the whole of Q1 2024.

re: Q1 2024 Surprise! Diesel car sales grew by 11%

I'm glad to see this increase in sales. Hope diesel breed don't get phased out. I feel primary reasons from my view:

1) Turbo Petrols are complicated and proves to be heavy on the pocket when you push it hard

2) There's not much of pricing difference between Diesels and turbo petrols anymore. That margin has gone small now

3) Diesels are actually enthusiasts' delight and is not only limited to being just family carrier. Drive Nexon Diesel vs Petrol, Sonet Diesel vs Petrol, or any Diesel vs Petrol, I honestly feel the torque addiction Diesel provides is simply unmatched

I do hope Government doesn't force OEMs to scale back on pushing Petrol/ Hybrids over Diesels!

I would attribute this Diesel car sales growth to the ongoing general election, especially for the SUV and MUV range.

People with high usage and have frequent highways trips go with Diesels. Diesel has no replacement as its mostly economical and its performance is superior.

Re: Q1 2024 Surprise! Diesel car sales grew by 11%

Using my Vento Diesel DSG for almost 8 years now, 1Lakh+ KM run, the smile it puts on my after pushing the accelerator is unmatched! Tried and tested a few modern cars like Seltos, Hector, etc., I don't get that smile at all. Its been a concern that there is almost no sedan that offers a good diesel engine now! Hector has diesel option, but no automatic!!

True. Other than the Altroz, one has to go for the 'hi riders' or have to stretch till Merc/BMW for a diesel.

If Baleno, City, Virtus, i20, Verna and Slavia still had their diesel engines, the diesel share would have been much higher. Now one is forced to go echuvee/crossover for diesel economy.

Re: Q1 2024 Surprise! Diesel car sales grew by 11%

Actually diesel share with in a segment type is not increasing, the segments which are diesel only (or diesel dominant) are gaining market share. If you look closely the growth is contributed by Mahindra, TATA & Toyota, rest others de-grew in diesel sales, and these three manufacturers drive volumes of large SUVs / MUVs (Hycross is exception).

Point is - segment with higher weights of diesel share has grown and not the share of diesel within a segment.

Re: Q1 2024 Surprise! Diesel car sales grew by 11%

Some interesting data points showcasing that Diesel is still relevant at higher segments (in SUVs). Until bigger EV Battery plants are setup in next 3-5 years in India, Diesel will be the go to fuel for those who can't bring Hybrids.

Is there similar data available for Hybrids? It will be only 4 cars, Hycross, Hyryder (& GV) and City but would be interesting to see Hybrid sales compared to Diesel.
